PalmThe President of the Balearic Government, Marga Prohens, has announced that 2026 will be the year in which construction begins on "more public housing than ever before in the Balearic Islands," a measure she described as her "greatest concern" given the difficulties many families and young people face in accessing housing. Prohens made these statements during her New Year's address, broadcast on IB3 Radio and Television, in which she advocated for moving towards a "sustainable and well-being-generating economic and social model for all." "Yes, public housing for the people here," she emphasized. The President highlighted that the Balearic Islands are ending the year as one of the autonomous communities with the highest economic growth, leading the increase in self-employed workers in Spain and reaching "almost full employment." However, she stressed the need to go beyond the figures and ensure that this growth benefits all citizens. This objective, she explained, is being addressed jointly with economic and social stakeholders within the framework of the Pact for Sustainability, a process that, she emphasized, extends beyond the scope of a single legislative term. The speech, delivered from the Son Quart estate in Menorca, began with a reference to Christmas as a connection to the traditions of the archipelago and the values of Christian humanism. Prohens also defended the agricultural and fishing sectors and announced the government's intention to approve a new agricultural law in 2026 that guarantees the sector's profitability and generational renewal. Regarding tourism, she underscored the government's commitment to a model based on "restraint and quality," a strategy that, she said, the Balearic Islands are leading with the unanimous support of Europe.

The president also highlighted the improvement of public services—education, healthcare, and social services—as one of the government's priorities. "The need for more housing for the people here, for more and better public services, and for the transformation of our model remains our priority for 2026," she stated.

Before concluding her speech, the president referred to political corruption and the "degradation" of some public institutions. In this context, she quoted the conservative politician and former president of the Balearic Government, Antoni Maura: "The ultimate despicable act is to allow there to be no justice in the nation." The government faces the remaining year and a half of its term with "humility" and "closeness to the people," aware that "there is still much to be done," acknowledged Prohens, who asserted that her administration governs "for the people here." In other areas, Prohens has called for more resources from the Spanish government and the European Union to address the migration crisis and combat human trafficking networks. She has also warned about political corruption and institutional decay, appealing for the need for justice and good governance.
