Public housing spaces in Mallorca have fallen by 15% in one year.
The PSIB criticizes the lack of staff and waiting lists, and accuses Guillermo Sánchez of abandoning his institutional responsibilities.
PalmThe socialist group of the Council of Mallorca This Saturday, the Spanish National Assembly denounced the loss of public residential places for the elderly, which have fallen from 963 in 2023 to 818 in 2024—a 15.06% reduction—as well as the lack of staff in the island's residences. According to the Socialist councilor and Secretary of Social Rights for the PSIB-PSOE (Socialist Workers' Party), Sofía Alonso, the situation has led to "closed units, endless waiting lists, and undignified working conditions for care workers."
She also criticized the paralysis of agreed-upon improvements and the situation of centers such as the Miquel Mir residence in Inca, inaugurated after two years of renovations, which is operating "at half speed, with one floor closed and without a day center due to a lack of staff." She also highlighted the deterioration of the service in Son Caulelles—with a petition collecting signatures from staff—and the paralysis of the measures planned to improve the working conditions of care workers.
Alonso also mentioned the Son Oms nursing home in the center of Palma, where there are 20 vacant places, while the waiting list continues to grow. "This lack of foresight in management affects the service provided to the citizens, and the people of Mallorca do not deserve it," she asserted.
The Socialist minister pointed to the "primary culprit" as the "primary culprit." president of IMASGuillermo Sánchez (PP), whose "lack of political leadership" she has denounced and demanded his resignation.
Absence of the IMAS president at the national meeting on migrant minors
The Socialists also criticized Sánchez for not even attending the last control session of the Consell, where he was supposed to report on his management, nor for the national meeting on the reception of unaccompanied migrant minors, "another example of abdication of institutional responsibility."
According to Alonso, "not attending the meeting where the conditions for the reception of migrant minors throughout the State were to be agreed upon, a first-level humanitarian emergency, is an abandonment of the institutional commitment to children and collective dignity." He denounced this decision as a response to the conditions imposed by VOX for approving the regional budget, which include refusing to accept unaccompanied migrant minors, vetoing increased resources for their care, and cutting public aid to organizations that work with migrants.
For Alonso, the president of IMAS has demonstrated that "he cares more about saving his position and that of Mr. Galmés than guaranteeing children's rights." Therefore, the Socialist group demands the immediate resignation of Guillermo Sánchez, considering that "he has failed in a legal, moral, and ethical obligation that is not optional: to protect all children, regardless of their origin."
