PalmThe Consell de Mallorca approved this Thursday in plenary session the first phase of the Mallorca Protege plan, which foresees allocating 12.6 million euros from reserves to cover part of the aid to mitigate the effects of the war in Iran and the Middle East. The measure was approved with the 20 favorable votes of PP, Vox, and El PI, while PSIB and MÉS per Mallorca, with 13 representatives, abstained.

The budgetary modification includes the incorporation of 25.5 million euros from reserves from previous years, of which nearly 13 million will be allocated to cushion the increase in prices and the social consequences derived from the conflict. The insular minister of Finance, Innovation, and Public Function, Rafel Bosch, announced that a second incorporation of 17.5 million euros will be approved “soon” to protect families, companies, and productive sectors.

This package of measures, added to the mobilization of 53.5 million euros in public works planned in this year's accounts, configures a global plan of 83.6 million euros.

Social measures and infrastructure

Of the 12.6 million approved, 10 million will be allocated to social measures. Specifically, 9.1 million will go to the Institut Mallorquí d’Afers Socials (IMAS) to facilitate access to housing for people with disabilities, implement improvements in the Palma Elderly Home, and strengthen residential reception for minors, among other actions.

In addition, 800,000 euros will be transferred to the town councils to organize summer activities for children and young people with the aim of facilitating work-life balance, while the remainder will be dedicated to expanding sociocultural activities.

Also, 2.4 million euros are foreseen to cover maintenance and conservation expenses for Mallorca's road network and a sum of 200,000 euros for audiovisual production through the Mallorca Film Commission. Bosch has highlighted that between 75% and 100% of grants will be advanced to expedite their management.

Criticism and political debate

During the debate, the spokesperson for El PI, Antoni Salas, defended the need for a “permanent social shield” for Majorcans and criticized the lack of dialogue in the elaboration of the measures. Vox, for its part, endorsed the proposal, considering that it responds to the needs of Majorcan society.

From the PSIB, spokesperson Catalina Cladera questioned that the budgetary modification is intended for current expenditure and assured that the Consell has 130 million euros of unused reserves. She also criticized the requirement of three years of residence to access certain aid, which she described as having a “racist stench”.

The spokesperson for the PP, Nuria Riera, defended the “rigorous” management of the insular treasury and criticized the socialist management in previous crises. Bosch thanked the groups for their support and assured that the Consell will allocate “double” the resources to direct aid and investments compared to past crises.

MÉS accuses the PP of vetoing amendments on S’Esplet in Agama’s motion

The MÉS per Mallorca group has denounced that the Popular Party in the Consell de Mallorca has rejected incorporating the amendments presented to its motion on the closure of Agama, a fact that, according to the formation, has prevented the inclusion of references to the Government's management in the S’Esplet case.

The proposals, defended by councilor Biel Payeras, aimed to broaden the scope of the initiative to address the global situation of the primary sector and equate the Agama case with the disappearance of the SAT S’Esplet, considered a key infrastructure for farmers, especially in sa Pobla.

MÉS has criticized the PP's "contradiction," which demands responsibility from the Damm group for Agama but, according to the eco-sovereigntist party, avoids doing the same to the Government for the S’Esplet case. The popular councilor in charge of the motion rejected incorporating these amendments, which, according to MÉS, prevents a complete analysis of the situation of the primary sector.
