They ask for an emergency plan in Llucmajor before the "health risk" due to waste

PalmaThe opposition in the Llucmajor City Council has asked the municipal government team to draw up an emergency shock plan in the face of the "health risk" generated by the accumulation of garbage in the areas of El Arenal and the urbanizations. The proposal, signed by PSIB, MÉS, Llibertat Llucmajor, and s'Ull, was presented this Wednesday at the information committee prior to the plenary session that will take place next week. The initiative, as the four parties reported in a joint statement, seeks to urge the government team to re-establish a minimum waste collection service in the face of the "chaos" of the "deficient" system that was implemented a few years ago and which has been "aggravated" by the currently accumulated dirt.

It also calls on the mayoress, Xisca Lascolas, to formally declare the existence of a situation of "serious risk to public health" and to activate the emergency processing provided for in the public sector contracts law with the aim of immediately contracting an extraordinary reinforcement service that incorporates the necessary human and material resources to eliminate the accumulation.

This extraordinary service, they have demanded, should be kept operational until the new waste collection contract comes into effect. Their intention is for the government team, within a maximum of two months, to appear at the plenary session to report on the measures that have been launched.

Contract termination

The persistent accumulation of waste in the areas of Arenal and urbanizations, they have publicly denounced, has generated an "evident deterioration of public sanitation, the urban environment and the image" of the municipality. All this has led to the existence of "bad smells, insects, rodents and other vectors that pose a clear risk to public health".

Although the opposition places the start of the problems in 2015, they have warned that the situation intensified "sharply" in 2024, coinciding with the end of the contract with the concessionary company FCC Medi Ambient and the extension of the service through an order of continuity that "does not guarantee the adequate provision of an essential service".

The procedure to award the new contract, they recalled, has not yet ended and, according to administrative terms, "it will hardly come into effect before a year". In their opinion, it is "inadmissible" that this circumstance "serves as a justification for maintaining a situation of generalized unhealthiness for months".
