The organization describes these figures as "remarkable results due to their stability" and emphasizes that consumption trends are consolidating sobrasada as a benchmark product. Last year, the Balearic Islands accounted for 36.7% of the market, representing a 3% increase compared to 2024, thus confirming the product's recognition in its region of origin. The rest of Spain remains the main driver of sales, representing 59.3% of the total, despite a relative decrease of 2.7%, as production increased by 0.5%.

The Balearic Government is working on a new label, "Product Made in the Balearic Islands," which will allow manufacturers to promote their products made in the Islands, even if they use materials and raw materials from elsewhere. The initiative comes after current regulations on local products require that at least 50% of the ingredients be from the Islands for a product to bear the "Product of the Balearic Islands" label. This criterion, which many in the production sector fully understand, excludes many products made in the archipelago but with raw materials from elsewhere. This is the case, for example, with certain cheeses made with imported milk, cookies made with foreign flour, and traditional almond and coffee products that are made with imported ingredients. Although these products have a manufacturing process entirely rooted in the Islands, current regulations prevent them from obtaining official recognition as local products. According to the Director General of Industry, Alfons Gómez, the Balearic Government has made significant progress on the draft of the new seal, which "will allow, for example, a bleach producer to highlight that the process was carried out in the Islands, even if the ingredients used are not." In such a small territory, "it's not easy for raw materials to come from the Balearic Islands, but if processors add value, as is the case with many well-known brands, it's absurd that this cannot be recognized," he told ARA Baleares. "It's possible to differentiate between products with local ingredients and products made in the Islands, with a transparent system that reflects the production phase that does take place in the archipelago," he added. The measure aims to recognize and promote industrial and artisanal activity in the Balearic Islands and make it easier for consumers to identify products made in the Islands, even if they don't meet the 50% local ingredient requirement. It also aims to enhance the visibility of the work of local producers and boost the food and manufacturing industry of the Archipelago. considered by most experts as a catalyst for change in the current economic model, based on tourism monoculture.

The product, in 4, 24, and 75 centiliter sizes, was presumably intended for sale within the airport. According to a statement from the department, using the island's name on a product not produced in Mallorca could constitute a serious violation of agri-food quality regulations. The minimum penalty is €3,001, pending the outcome of the corresponding investigation. The Director General of Agri-food Quality and Local Products, Joan Llabrés, affirmed that the Balearic Government is maintaining vigilance to prevent unfair competition against Balearic producers and consumer fraud. As he emphasized, the use of the name "Mallorca" on products made outside the island "directly harms producers who comply with regulations and work to maintain the quality standards associated" with the territory. Llabrés stressed the context in which the intervention took place: the product's target audience was visitors who want to take home a gastronomic souvenir of the island. "Tourists trust that what they buy is truly representative of Mallorca," he underlined. The action falls within the inspection and control tasks carried out by the Directorate General for Agri-food Quality and Local Products, which is responsible for safeguarding protected names, native breeds, and the origin of agri-food products marketed in the Balearic Islands. The Government reiterated its commitment to defending local products, transparency in marketing, and guaranteeing truthful information for consumers. He assured that he will continue to take action against any misuse of names linked to the Islands.

Far from the image of expansion that characterized the years before the pandemic, small producers and brewers report a continuous decline in consumption and are struggling against increasingly burdensome and restrictive regulations. They denounce that this crisis has led to the disappearance of many historic brands and is constantly suffocating those that remain. "We haven't recovered from what we had before COVID, not by a long shot," warns Miquel Amorós, founder and owner of Mallorca Beer Co., a company that currently produces in an emblematic location that was once another industrial site: Menestralia, in Campanet. However, the brewer maintains that currently, "every day is a fight to avoid closing down."

In an interview given this Tuesday, Costa said that "the wine chosen for these holidays would be a Ribera del Duero, blatantly ignoring the excellent wine production of our islands," according to the farmers' union. Unió de Pagesos considers it "unacceptable that the highest-ranking official in the community's economy turns his back on the local primary sector at the time of peak consumption of the year." Furthermore, the union points out that the Balearic wine sector "is a benchmark of quality with Designations of Origin and Protected Geographical Indications that receive international acclaim." Therefore, the farmers' union insisted: "Recommending products from elsewhere from a public institution is not only a communication blunder, but a direct attack on food sovereignty and the sustainability of our landscape."

"We've grown in both members and production compared to last year," confirms Rosa Andreu, head of S'Obrador. Due to the increased production, the facilities "have become too small," Andreu explains. In fact, according to the Spanish Society of Organic Agriculture (SEAE), this market is the most important in the entire country in terms of the number of stalls and its frequency. The project, which began fifteen years ago and can be visited every Tuesday and Saturday in Plaça Patins in Palma, is experiencing a period of growth while maintaining its essence: a loyal clientele, exclusively local and organic producers and products, and a relationship between buyers and sellers more akin to that of friends or family than to that of business transactions. "It's an example of how a market can thrive in a city while also protecting local and organic products," remarked Marialaura Dolfi of Apaema.

It's seven in the morning and Maria Serra Miquel, a 61-year-old woman from Murcia, has been up for almost two hours. With her husband, she's already set up the stall with a generous array of tomatoes, radishes, onions, leeks, chard, lettuce, eggplant, beans, melons... She's surrounded by about fifteen other pleasures. She's one of the oldest. She's secured a shady spot to spend the morning. "I," she says, "just want to retire. I've been saying it for three years, but customers keep asking me to hang on a little longer. Pleasure is very cruel, especially in summer and winter, when you have to suffer through the hot, cold, and rainy days."

Thirteen years ago, they promoted the creation of a luxury campsite in Sona Parets Vives, the nearly 40-hectare estate they manage south of Ciutadella. The project didn't go ahead, but after the headaches with the authorities, they decided to work the land, buy cattle, and make a product that would set them apart from the rest. The result is called Gaia, an ancient deity from Greek mythology who personified the earth and who now gives her name to a cheese.
