Sánchez showed his support for Rodríguez after a meeting of more than two hours with the Spanish king, Felipe VI, in which the fires in Madrid, Ávila, and Zamora were the focus of much of the meeting. "I want to express my absolute empathy with the citizens," he remarked. Sánchez acknowledged that he has not yet spoken about the incidents with Rodríguez and pointed out that he hopes the investigation ordered by the delegate will serve to "determine responsibilities".

The emeritus king took advantage of a lightning visit to the island to enter on Sunday the residence that concentrated the family, political, and social life of the Spanish monarchy for decades. Before that, he celebrated at the Flanigan restaurant the 80th birthday of its owner, Miguel Arias, an old friend from the times when the establishment was known as 'the King's restaurant', as reported by La Vanguardia. The monarch had arrived on Sunday morning in Mallorca on a private plane from Geneva. The trip coincided with the departure of Felipe VI, who had left the island to visit, along with Queen Letizia, the neighbors displaced by the fires and housed in a sports center in Villamanta, Madrid. That same evening, the monarch traveled to Lima to attend the inauguration of the new president of Peru, Keiko Fujimori.

https://en.arabalears.cat/opinion/triumphant_129_5811566.html

These days of patriotic celebration in honor of the Spanish footballers who have won the World Cup, we see how there is no form of nationalism that is not made against a good part of the 'nations' involved. Spain can beat Argentina or whoever, but what should be the symbol of sporting superiority of one human group over another becomes the emblem of the supremacism of a group or an idea of the Spanish nation above the other peoples of Spain. They are victories that are celebrated mostly internally, and not at all externally. They serve for the inside; those on the outside don't even look at them or pass by them completely, either enraged or indifferent. Those who say that football should be separated from politics should admit, at least, that it is impossible to separate sporting results from it, because they are immediately used politically as instruments of symbolic imposition, as emblems of an identity that erases or sidelines others. And needless to say, they are instrumentalized by the power of the moment, whether it be the monarchy or the progressivism of the Madrid government, which will make good use of it to interpret everything in view of its electoralist squabble. Spain could be a plural, multilingual, diverse, and inclusive project, needless to say it is theoretically and intellectually possible, but in practice it is a project of dissolution, assimilation, and erasure, or which even lives with discomfort, not the Catalan identity of some players, but their different skin color or their faith in Islam. There has been no World Cup celebration party that has not been erected into a party of mockery, where chants against the minorities of the Spanish state itself are common, without any mockery for the fallen rivals on the way to the final. States are made against nations, not against other states, which are also political machines of mass destruction of languages and differences, which, needless to say, are gladly renounced, all to be able to participate in the triumph without worries or bad conscience. We are seeing how it is especially children who are assimilated in this kind of collective euphoria explosions, because it is above all a form of infantilism, this nationalism based on ignorance or contempt or even self-hatred that leads you to forget your identity or language and to want to integrate into the 'victorious' mass.

And, after the police charges of 26-J, the narrative of tourist saturation has been sidelined in the media by another debate much more comfortable for Marga Prohens' Government. It is important not to lose focus, because the president is one of the main people responsible for responding to the problems that the tourism model generates in the daily lives of the citizens of the Balearic Islands. The day after one of the most massive protests ever seen in the Islands, Prohens has not felt the need to face the situation, nor to give explanations about the lack of management, nor to confront her unfulfilled promises. The president has spoken about the charges, has demanded explanations from the Spanish government delegate, Alfonso Rodríguez, and has remarked that she respects the right to demonstrate, as if that were not a given.

Antònia Verger was for many years the lady of the Puig or of Cas Carboner, later. Without realizing it, she was a leader, a reference for other women who in the last quarter of the last century too often did not escape household chores. Verger began like this, not in vain when she is asked about her studies, she explains that she managed to take exams at the Institute of Felanitx, but, "the boys continued their studies and the girls, as was usual at that time, ended up doing household chores or as seamstresses". It was at the beginning of the seventies – and not without difficulties, as you will see in the interview – that she embarked, together with her husband, Biel Bennàssar Mayol Carboner, on the adventure of managing the bar and restaurant of Puig de Sant Miquel. In this conversation, Verger reviews from the beginning the success of her cuisine to the tensions and the social transformation that, without knowing it, it represented for the women of the town.

His name was (and still is) unknown to most, and even more so his image, because no one would have recognized him on the street (it is known that he was a voluminous man and sported a nineteenth-century beard). To give us an idea of the volume of his assets, it should be known that a few months after his death, another great financier of the time died, Emilio Botín-Sanz de Sautuola y López, president of Banco Santander between 1950 and 1986, and his heirs had to pay half of what the Masaveus had paid for inheritance tax. A tax bill of this amount could not go unnoticed by public administrations, and that is why the autonomous communities of Madrid and Asturias spent more than a decade litigating to keep the prize, in a struggle that the Asturians finally won.

https://en.arabalears.cat/opinion/pack-suitcases-give-food_129_5809781.html

From what we have seen in recent weeks, our rulers (both elected and unelected) are afraid of citizen mobilizations. The shameful episode of the arrest – with shackles and jail and all – of the activists from Santa Maria, the warning – the threat? – from the Civil Guard and the National Police announcing that they will prosecute “delictes contra el turisme” (we must understand that they mean fraudulent tourist offers, because otherwise, we don't know who they are talking about), the attempts from the tribune docile to the Government to disqualify, or directly criminalize, the human chain of last day 5 against the lack of protection of the Trenc – Salobrar de Campos Natural Park, the contradiction of the president of CAEB Carmen Planas applauding the arrest of the young women from Santa Maria and asking to “flee from extremism” (extremism is shackling and arresting innocent citizens, ladies and gentlemen)... All this only serves to demonstrate the nervousness of the Government (Balearic), the government delegation (of Spain), the security forces and bodies, and certain tourism entrepreneurs (who command over the rest). Like all fears, that of these rulers and public powers is emotional. This means that it blinds them and prevents them from making a correct analysis of reality. And it also demonstrates a lack of democratic consistency on their part.To all these timid and unfortunate actions and statements must be added those of the first vice-president and government spokesperson, Antoni Costa. According to him, the application of degrowth policies "would have consequences in terms of employment, there would be people who would have to pack their bags." It seems like a joke, but this was said by a vice-president of the Balearic Government. Probably, even now it has not occurred to him to stop and think about what he said, or where he said it.For a long time, many citizens of the Balearic Islands with higher education have had to leave these islands to seek their working lives, because here they simply have nothing to do. Scientists, researchers, doctors, architects, physicists, musicologists... In all the variety of disciplines and knowledge we can think of, the brain drain from the Balearics, the loss of people who give vitality to a society and can make it progress, is a constant and dramatic fact, for which we pay and will pay (and future generations will pay) a very high price. There are also many people who pack their bags because they cannot buy or rent an apartment or a house on islands where housing has been vampirized by speculators – large, medium, and small – with the enthusiastic applause of our rulers and their propagandists, who claim that all this "feeds us".It is the same paternalistic and condescending vision, according to which we Mallorcans, Minorcans, Ibizans, and Formenterans have no other option than to sell these islands in pieces, and in the meantime, sink them into the degradation of mass tourism and let the last one close the door. The demonstrations this July have been a "enough is enough" that our rulers should listen to. They will be completely mistaken if, instead of listening, they try to present citizen protests as extremism, exaggeration, or even as a crime against we don't know what. They will be so mistaken, if they do that, that they will lose power. Taking things for granted, disregarding the voices that protest, is characteristic of mediocre and arrogant politicians. These are the ones, for the good of all, who we should see pack their bags and never again see them in positions of public responsibility.

Around 11:30 PM, practically everyone was heading towards the main stage to accompany the "group of our lives," they said, the group "that changed everything for music in Mallorca and in Catalan," it was commented. Yesterday more than ever, the public could not miss it.

For decades, a large part of the islanders assumed that tourism was much more than an economic activity. It was the foundation of prosperity, the guarantee that the Balearic Islands could offer opportunities and a good standard of living. With many nuances, because the benefits have never been distributed equitably, the majority accepted that the costs of the model were offset by the well-being it generated. For a long time, however, this balance has been broken. We are paying the price for what has been considered a success, but this price should not be paid eternally, nor can it become increasingly expensive.

With these ingredients and the premise of adapting the dramaturgy and choreography based on the conversations, Lluís Garau (La Torre, 1997) created The Meat in 2022, a performance interpreted entirely by him. His obsessions – the internet and identity shaped by algorithms – have led him to this “painful” process of stepping into the shoes of a cybersex addict. After receiving accolades such as the Oscar Wilde Award at the Dublin Theatre Festival, he turned The Meat in film, to go beyond the cybercruising. Directed by Joan Porcel, this thriller documentary has just won two Silver Biznagas in Malaga. I am very sad. As a young man, I would never have imagined that Mallorca's future would be like it is now, an island full of cement and tourists, with saturated roads and residents who cannot afford housing. For this summer's concerts, I'm considering singing ‘Trenc’ again, which I dedicated four decades ago to the emblematic beach of Campos that now, unfortunately, is once again under threat”. ‘Trenc’ was the debut of the country singer from Vilafranca as an environmental activist at 35 years old. Curiously, the word ‘xibòlet’ comes from the Bible, from the book of Judges, in which it is explained how forty-two thousand Ephraimites died for not being able to pronounce like our ‘x’ the initial consonant of the word, which they emitted as an ‘s’, which differentiated them from the rest of the Hebrews.

The containment advocated by the Executive is not reflected, at the moment, in the arrival figures: in 2025, a new record was broken with more than 19 million tourists in the Balearic Islands.

Lluís Servera Sitjar is not only one of the best people you can be lucky enough to meet, but he is also an active man who has championed special projects such as the translation magazine Superna, a poet who undoubtedly must be taken into account for the quality of his verses full of wisdom, a translator of absolute reference who has provided us with exceptional works, a true cultural ambassador between the Catalan Countries and Italy. His latest beautiful task has been to translate into our language La barca, the very first book by the magnificent poet Mario Luzi, for the emblematic collection Jardins de Samarcanda of Cafè Central. It is not the first time we have enjoyed Luzi in Catalan – since Servera Sitjar himself translated La Passió. Via Crucis al Colosseu for La Fosca of Lleonard Muntaner, Editor – but the appearance of La barca is an excellent excuse to revisit it: the best readings are rereads. As the title itself indicates, La barca is an essentially maritime book, but let no one expect that what this delicious volume proposes is explicit, typical, or cliché: it is considered that with this work the first currents of the literary movement known as 'Italian hermeticism' were unleashed, that is, a writing with a tendency towards crypticness, concentrated languages, highly metaphorical expressiveness, admirable musicality, and a consubstantial use of each word. Such a will to write differently was quite voluntary: it was an intellectual, stylistic, and political reaction against the grandiloquent triumphalism of the fascist rhetorics of the time, but it was also an invitation to active participation during the reading process, and thanks to such a gesture the poem became a space open to multiple and rich interpretations. Therefore, what Mario Luzi powerfully achieves with these aquatic pages is to give us a series of delicious images, of scenes imbued with serenades and nocturnal songs in which fatal lovers cradle themselves amidst trembles of all kinds. La barca is the foundational miracle of a new poetry that changed the way of doing things in the 20th century with a brutal capacity for influence, and the magnificent work of Lluís Servera Sitjar transports all this to our linguistic code and our literary system with a fruitfulness that confirms, once again, the ties that bind us in the same framework: the Mediterranean. The boat, by Mario Luzi –with translation by Lluís Servera Sitjar in Jardins de Samarcanda by Cafè Central– is a beautiful, refreshing, moving book, a perfect classic for this summer but also for any season, and it is that the best poetry and the best translations have no expiration date. Enjoy these days, despite the heat, and we will read each other again in September. Good wishes!

https://en.arabalears.cat/opinion/change-or-die-less-tourism-more-life_129_5808117.html

Tourism is killing us. I'm not saying it, economists are. Until now, this was a taboo. The economic academy, with a clearly neoliberal tendency, insisted on selling us tourism as the golden goose, thanks to which we all live and don't starve. There are still people who, when you criticize the tourist model, respond: "And you, what do you live on?". We are not talking about tourism in general, but about the current system of tourist monoculture and limitless growth that we suffer from, the model that is killing us. First, due to evidence that became apparent during the pandemic. When I took the Political Economy course, we learned that a monoculture economic system (like the tourism monoculture) is a weak system, exposed to uncontrollable external factors, such as pandemics, geopolitical crises, and fluctuations in transport prices, among others. In the case of tourism, we also depend on the good economic performance of the emitting countries, and let's not forget climate change and rising temperatures. Who will want to come and suffer scorching summers? First lesson: For an economy to be strong, it cannot put all its eggs in one basket; it must diversify. Less tourism and more development of other economic sectors. Secondly, this model, if it once served to improve the Balearic economy, is now impoverishing and expelling the resident population. The Fènix Report (coordinated by Xavier Roig) has just been presented. Although the document was initially focused on Catalonia, its authors maintain that the tourism economy of the Islands is an extreme example of what they denounce, an economy that generates macroeconomic growth, but which impoverishes residents and reduces productivity. The Balearic Islands are increasing their global GDP and population, but GDP per capita and the quality of life of their citizens are not improving. The continuity of this model not only poses technical challenges – such as access to housing, the availability of natural resources, and the sustainability of public services – but also generates general impoverishment and can lead to a growing social fracture, placing us at a crossroads: either structural reforms are adopted to correct current dynamics, or the risk of progressive deterioration of the economic model is assumed. These economists have not been the first to say this. It is fair to mention the Consell Econòmic i Social de les Illes Balears (CES), the collegiate body for participation, study, deliberation, advice, and proposal in economic and social matters, according to the Statute of Autonomy, because in its reports it had already denounced the impoverishment of the Balearic Islands, even though no one, starting with the governments that should be the main recipients of its reports, paid any attention. According to the CES, the Islands are the community that has most impoverished itself in the last twenty-five years. Despite the good macroeconomic figures, household disposable income is falling notably, and we are the territory where it is most difficult to acquire housing. Despite the Balearic Government's effort to decouple the housing problem from tourism, there is a direct relationship. That increased demand causes prices to rise is a fundamental principle of economics. Before, housing was for living. Now it is for tourist rental, second homes for non-resident foreigners, for renting rooms (often abusively, without a contract, without rights, and without a receipt), an investment and speculation asset for vulture funds, etc. According to the Bank of Spain, 10.6% of the total housing stock in the Balearic Islands are tourist homes and those owned by non-residents. In the urban area of Palma, tourist use dwellings represent 7.6% of the rental market, and we assume this refers just to 'legal' rentals. The PP government uses the housing problem as an excuse to destroy territory, but it is tourism where we must look. The tourism that expropriates our homes and rights, as we see now with tourism sector workers and the war on false 'absenteeism' launched by the employers' association. Therefore, we invite you to the demonstration on July 26 called by the Platform Less Tourism, More Life. We want another possible economy at the service of citizens and not of tourism companies, with housing, labor rights, where the territory, natural resources, water are preserved. United, combative and joyful, no one will stop us. Less tourism, more life.

President Marga Prohens assured that this summer an application would be launched to monitor beach occupancy. The operation consisted of placing sensors in a hundred locations. It is now the end of July and this project has not yet started. Government sources explain that the application is in beta format and undergoing internal testing, and they assure that it will be ready before the season ends.
