Of these, about 300,000 lived in Mallorca and about 100,000 were gathered in Palma. They were one of the communities with the highest illiteracy rate. 77% of the population could neither read nor write – in the case of women, the figure was higher. It was from 1926 onwards, with the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera, that a plan for the construction of educational infrastructure was devised to reverse the situation. The majority of those that existed at the time occupied old buildings reused as schools and had pitiful conditions of light and sanitation.

The event that took place last September 5th in Santa Coloma de Farners, in homage and restitution of the memory of the two Catalan nurses, Daria and Mercè Buxadé, murdered by the fascists on September 5th, 1936, in Manacor and buried in the Son Coletes cemetery, has been possible due to a confluence of facts and forces that must be valued as a whole. There is, without a doubt, the perseverance of their nephew, Carles Buxadé, who has dedicated his life to recovering their history. There is the work of researchers Antoni Tugores and Jaume Miró, who have contributed to reconstructing it. There is the La Bulla association of Santa Coloma de Farners, which has returned the memory of its neighbors. And there is the task of Memòria de Mallorca, of people and entities that make it possible for the victims of Francoism to cease being invisible.

Official data confirm that holders of a single house or apartment are becoming fewer and, like pure communicating vessels, the group of multi-property owners is increasing. In less than two decades, the proportion of cadastral holders with a single urban asset has gone from 64.78% in 2007 to 54.61% in 2026. Meanwhile, all brackets of multi-property owners up to 25 properties per person are growing and the jump is especially pronounced among small and medium-sized holders.

https://en.arabalears.cat/misc/unbeatable-blai-bonet-award_129_5847572.html

On the occasion of the centenary of the birth of the extraordinary writer from Santanyí, the City Council of Santanyí has promoted this year a new award that is undoubtedly very important from now on among its already consolidated literary recognitions: the Blai Bonet prize for contemporary thought, and the person who begins such a milestone this 2026 could not have been a better winner than Lucia Pietrelli, a powerful author who precisely adopted the Catalan language for literary creation –in the manner of other figures who abandoned their mother tongues to use languages of adoption such as Joseph Conrad, Vladimir Nabokov, Samuel Beckett and Agota Kristof– after the impact that the reading of the novel El mar, by Blai Bonet caused her. Her first and pioneering essay is titled Vestigis. Laberint amb pare en flames and has seen the light, like the other distinguished works, at AdiA Edicions.Vestigis starts from grief to turn it into a form of knowledge by transforming the intimate experience of the father's death into an inquiry of mythological, telluric, and cosmic dimensions. From this writing engine, some of the theories that Carl Gustav Jung built from alchemical processes of luminous wounds are confirmed: he warned us that we must, from our shit, make gold. And all this without falling into morbidity, as can be said of other recent and not-so-recent works that have set trends. Symbolically, the book seems written in the manner of a journey or heroic voyage from the inside of a labyrinth, a deep structure and explicit allegory of a consciousness that struggles to assimilate death and integrate it into life through different paths or corridors of a fragmentary nature. For this reason, it is appropriate that Joseph Campbell's reflections are part of a very detailed and quite complete bibliography alongside other great names of thought and literature, from the Greco-Roman mythological tradition to findings that could engage as equals with those of Pascal Quignard and Amélie Nothomb. From this perspective, we are facing an authentic and splendid European essay. The result is surprisingly clean, beautiful, and accessible, made of an allusive writing that never loses the capacity to communicate emotion and provoke commotion. Vestigis. Laberint amb pare en flames, by Lucia Pietrelli at AdiA Edicions, is a brave, creative, poetic, and Blaibonetian essay that does not suffer from the quagmires of the genre and shines with a hybrid writing that lifts a concrete anecdote and sublimates it into shared universal wisdom, since the accurate and dazzling final reflections arise from the very vibrant nerves of life's extreme tensions, those that lead us to the abysses of disappearance and emptiness and re-mind us what makes us human.

The perfect storm over the Balearic Islands: The double plunder that leads us to self-hatred

https://en.arabalears.cat/opinion/the-perfect-storm-over-the-balearic-islands-the-double-plunder-that-leads-us-to-self-hatred_129_5847552.html

Living in the Balearic Islands has become, for the majority of their historical citizens, an almost impossible exercise in resistance. Beneath a layer of blue sky and idyllic postcards for tourists, a dramatic reality beats: the Archipelago suffers from an economic and social pincer designed from the outside that hollows us out from within. On one hand, a Spanish state that keeps our hands and feet tied (with the ‘you more than me’ of generalized corruption); on the other, a European Union that uses us as the playground and luxury residence of its elites (in exchange for European funds directed at national and European strategic points). The result of this formula is the systematic impoverishment of the local population. The double trap: wages from emptied Spain, prices from wealthy Europe. The Balearic plunder cannot be explained without understanding a bloody paradox. The Spanish state maintains a salary structure in the Islands that does not differ from that of the so-called ‘emptied Spain’. It is expected that a teacher, a police officer, or an administrative worker lives in Palma and Ibiza with the same salary they would have in Teruel or Zamora. This lack of real compensation for insularity has caused an administrative and social collapse: State civil servants no longer want to come to the Balearic Islands, because coming means, directly, losing purchasing power and brushing against the threshold of precariousness. While Madrid keeps us tied to wage poverty, Europe presses the accelerator on the cost of living. The legal avalanche of new wealthy residents—coming from northern Europe and half the world—has sent housing and basic service prices soaring to prohibitive levels. We find ourselves trapped in an invisible mousetrap: we earn like in inland Spain, but we pay like in the most opulent Bavaria.Faced with this scenario of asphyxiation, many Balearic families have been forced into a sad reality to survive and emigrate again, or to maintain a minimum standard of living: parting with the family heritage. Selling the grandparents' house, the lifelong land, and the small local business have gone from being an option to being a matter of strict necessity. It is here that the most perverse mechanism of the colonizing machinery is activated. Instead of pointing out the structural causes, the official narrative points to us."You are Phoenicians who would sell your own mother", they throw at us with the condescension of the unintegrated outsider. It is one of the oldest psychological manipulation maneuvers in history: blaming the victim for their own exploitation. The miracle of installing self-hatred in the hearts of the Balearic people has been achieved, making us believe that we are the only ones responsible for this consented plunder. But if there is one element that borders on collective masochism, it is the political behavior in the Islands. As a society, we have not only bought into the narrative of guilt, but we continue to reward at the polls the parties that perpetuate this situation.Political forces of state obedience —especially fueled by the vote of newcomers from the peninsula who often look at the local identity with suspicion— continue to monopolize power. The PP, Vox, the PSIB-PSOE, and Podemos systematically act as branches of Madrid.Even those who presented themselves as the "saviors of the people", like Podemos, have ended up turning their backs on the Balearic people. The latest sign of this betrayal has been the party's rejection (joining other right-wing state blocs) of the bill proposed by MÉS to establish a specific interprofessional minimum wage for the Balearic Islands that is adapted to the actual cost of living here. While the Balearic social fabric is unraveling, the Parliament of the Islands prefers to look the other way and obey the dictates of the offices in Madrid. How long will we apologize for having to sell to survive? How long will we feed with our votes the same parties that condemn us to be second-class citizens in our own land? The first step to stop the looting is, without a doubt, to banish self-hatred and begin to point out, once and for all, the true culprits.

A story nested there and actors followed by a camera gave life to a tale that transformed the surroundings and the perception we had of them. Now, that space is conditioned and linked to our cinematic memory. It is true that before cinema arrived there, the landscape already existed: the light over the sea, the wind among the bushes, the profile of the mountains, the silence of a cove. But one day it arrived and transformed everything, made it its own, and even gave it a name: Mago beach, inside the cove of Portals Vells, in the municipality of Calvià.

We have lost the habit of reading and the custom of thinking. We have become empty and passive receptacles that delegate, out of laziness, the resolution of problems to a minority of wise men and experts. Furthermore, this passivity is aggravated by confirmation bias, a psychological mechanism that acts silently in our minds, and through which we only listen to what we want to hear and believe exclusively what is in accordance with our beliefs, with what suits us and benefits us in a particular way. We no longer seek the truth, but rather consume information uncritically.

The gateway to the island was just that, a door. Today that door has become a piece of machinery that has a lot, or everything, of a shredder. It is not a very exaggerated metaphor. Because Aena is no longer satisfied with managing an airport: it expands it, fills it, sells it, rents it, exploits it, and extracts as much juice from it as it can. All parties except Vox have voted in favor of this initiative to protect the underwater mountains located between Mallorca and the Pitiüses, "one of the most unique and valuable marine spaces in the western Mediterranean," according to the text of the PNL. It is a structure 275 kilometers long, with peaks reaching 94 meters in depth and habitats that extend to more than 1.2 kilometers. Les Olives, Ausiàs March, and Émile Baudot are the mountains that are part of these spaces, which host rhodolith beds (stone-shaped marine algae), corals, sponges, and deep-sea gorgonians.

The family federation FAPA Mallorca makes the most forceful criticism of it. Its president, Xavier Ferriol, asserts that the Executive has “a very marked line, which is the privatization of education” and cites as examples the new charter lines for Baccalaureate and 0-3 years and the charter decree, which, he claims, “shields charter schools.” He also denounces that, while the drop in birth rates allows for the reduction of lines in public schools, the Government creates charter ones.

Beyond sun and beach, the island's institutions talk about cultural tourism, sports tourism, gastronomic tourism, urban tourism... Now it is the turn of oleotourism, a concept that the Council of Mallorca wants to exploit through participation in the Oleotourism Spain project. The island institution announced today that the plenary session has approved the accession to the Spanish Association of Olive Tree Municipalities, the entity promoting Oleotourism Spain. Being part of this entity "allows the Council to advance in the process so that Mallorca becomes an oleotouristic destination and can be part of this state-wide network," the island institution stated through a press release.

https://en.arabalears.cat/opinion/the-results-that-surprised-no-one_129_5846685.html

These days, everyone is talking about the disastrous results obtained by students in the Spanish state in the PISA tests. It is true that the trend has not been positive for years, but rather the opposite; however, there is one issue that is especially alarming: reading comprehension. For years, the education system has been balancing constant legislative changes, pedagogical experiments, budget cuts, and forced digitalization without achieving the desired results. All this paraphernalia has eclipsed a fundamental issue: school no longer guarantees that students know how to read and write. Degrees are given away and students are passed to the next grade to mask a chilling reality, which is that every year the system churns out students with an ESO degree in hand that is good for nothing more than for the government of the day to exempt itself from the responsibility of having a high school failure rate. Students with an ESO degree incapable of maintaining a basic level conversation in Catalan; students with an ESO degree who do not know how to locate continents on a map; students with an ESO degree who do not know what a percentage is; students with an ESO degree who cannot link two sentences in English and now, with all of you, the icing on the cake: students with an ESO –or high school– degree who do not understand what they read. Unfortunately, it seems that the system is no longer designed to educate children, but to look after them while their parents are at work. While the law asks teachers to train critical citizens, to evaluate competencies such as ‘learning to learn’ and to prepare students for the world of the future –a delirious abstraction– the reality is that the educational system is not a priority for political leaders. What future awaits all those who are not capable of understanding a short text? How is someone supposed to learn for themselves if they do not have the minimum literacy skills developed? Who will be the great beneficiary if, tomorrow, a worker is not even capable of understanding what their employment contract says? Who does it benefit that the public education system is in decline? It does not seem that the LOMLOE has helped much to improve the situation or to facilitate the work of teachers – whoever has read any of the evaluation criteria stipulated therein will know what we are talking about. Likewise, the implementation of some pedagogical approaches has not achieved, for the moment, much more than burdening teachers with bureaucracy. As if all this were not enough, artificial intelligence will arrive in schools to definitively suppress natural intelligence and, incidentally, will allow some to do business with new 'training' for teachers. It is true that the current educational model is much more ambitious than that of past times: it attempts to reach everyone, respect the family and personal situations of each child, adapt to the rhythm and needs of each student… But to achieve all this, the ground must be prepared: increase investment in education, dignify the role of teachers, implement realistic laws, and, ultimately, imbue the public education system with an authority and prestige that, as of now, it has lost. Lamentations and the patches with which public school has been mended over the last decades are of little use. An ESO degree that does not guarantee that the student has basic knowledge has the same value as a thirty-euro bill. Let's not fool ourselves; we will not get out of this situation by inertia or without making structural changes. It is necessary –more than ever, perhaps– that all parties involved –government, opposition, teachers, families, citizens committed to a better future (excuse the abstraction)– fight for the public education system to be a guarantee of knowledge and academic quality.

Children running in, parents extending the goodbye for a few seconds, backpacks still without a single stain, and the occasional cry that escapes just before crossing the door. There are also those who arrive with their holidays still stuck to their faces and those who, on the other hand, seem delighted to see their friends again. "I was more eager than he was to return," jokes a mother as she accompanies her son to the entrance. The boy, however, does not seem very worried about the start of the school year. He looks towards the door and just waits to be let in. "Yesterday he said he didn't want to come and today there is no stopping him," she explains.

https://en.arabalears.cat/opinion/the-flag_129_5845291.html

It is not the only one there is, but it usually always is. How is it that the Spanish flag, also called 'estanquera' or rojigualda, in Spanish, sooner or later ends up appearing when there is some statement or demonstration 'against' something, and so rarely in favor?I do not know the situation in Ceuta well enough to formulate an in-depth opinion on it, and that is by no means what I intend to do. All in all, I have the impression that we are facing a case where everyone has done practically everything late and poorly: the Spanish government has acted with a lack of speed only attributable to the holiday period, something unjustifiable from an institutional point of view, and the opposition parties have swooped down like hyenas on the inhabitants of the autonomous city and also on the people who have tried to enter from Morocco, only to achieve a miserable electoral gain. The Federation of Municipalities and Provinces of the State has also made an appearance, which did not take long to call for a markedly partisan mobilization with a slogan that is undoubtedly perverse and adulterated: everyone knows that the demonstrations called in front of the town halls were not so much aimed at supporting Ceuta as at protesting for the umpteenth time against the supposed 'illegitimate government' of Pedro Sánchez. Or at most, to vindicate the traces of a not-so-distant colonial past in a city that is also supposedly Spanish… In North Africa. And within this breeding ground, of course, the Spanish flag could not be missing. It is the one they bring out when they want to repress the yearnings for freedom of any of the peoples or nations that currently form part of the State (at least partially, as is the case with Euskal Herria and the Catalan Countries, which also extend into other states such as France, Andorra, and Italy). It is the one that the LGBTIQ+ community often finds right in front of their noses when the reactionary right protests against laws that protect their physical and emotional integrity. It is the flag that usually comes out during competitions and when other countries are crushed, especially in sports mostly practiced by men, and also when there are conflicts with other states, such as the United Kingdom, with Perejil, and Morocco, in this latest migratory but also territorial crisis. It is a flag that says, with three colored stripes, something similar to the “go get them” that we have heard shouted at the top of their lungs by members of the State security forces who are supposedly meant to protect citizens, and not beat them up. It is the flag of “Spain is one, and not fifty-one” (which is not usually said, naturally, in Catalan), and the one that sometimes loses the current coat of arms of the Bourbon restoration and recovers the eagle that presided over it for forty ignominious years. It is the flag of no, the flag of “tough luck,” the flag of those who strike and who unfortunately only tend to take to the streets when anger and desires for destruction push them to do so. To go against. Rarely in favor. It is not my flag.

The Proinba Association aspires to amend the Balearic Islands' Urban Planning Law to facilitate the processing of real estate projects even if the water supply has not been approved. The document arrives after the developers have encountered difficulties in moving forward with the projects that aim to address the housing emergency. The regulatory reform that they have sent to Parliament would allow apartments to be approved first and then resolve whether they have the water necessary for future inhabitants legally guaranteed. This is the type of approach that courts have struck down in other territories, reminding that the order is the other way around: first it is necessary to prove that there is water, and then begin with licenses and permits.

The results of PISA 2025, published this Tuesday, have left the Islands below the Spanish, EU, and OECD averages in the three evaluated competencies: 441 points in Reading, 449 in Mathematics, and 471 in Science. The conclusion they always ended with was the same: "What a shame, what the neighborhood has turned into," explains Joan Gomáriz, a member of Salvem s'Escorxador. They began to coordinate, and suddenly, there were a hundred people in a WhatsApp group. Then came the support of the neighborhood associations of Santa Pagesa and Can Capiscol, and the promise to reactivate the Camp Redó neighborhood community.

According to the party, her proposal is based on the idea that the Balearic Islands cannot continue to be governed "for the benefit of a few while more and more families have difficulty accessing housing, making ends meet, or building a life project."

"We are recovering the trust of citizens, tired of years of unfulfilled promises," he claimed from the rostrum. This regulation, which begins its processing in Parliament today, starts without any party against it. All parties except Vox, which abstained, have voted in favor of its consideration. But for it to reach the Chamber, Galmés had to overcome some obstacles. In the final year of the legislature, the approval of this initiative is now his main electoral card. Therefore, he has asked for it to be approved "as quickly as possible" so that it comes into force "next season".

The union points out that the Islands' educational system has been dragging a combination of shortcomings for years that hinder the improvement of learning. The organization argues that there is not a single cause that explains the results, but rather a sum of factors. Among these, it points to "historical underfunding," overcrowded and heterogeneous classrooms, the lack of teachers and covered positions, continuous legislative changes, the impact of screens and artificial intelligence, and socioeconomic inequalities.

https://en.arabalears.cat/opinion/nationalist-heritage_129_5844201.html

Shortly before the summer, a friend told me that he had gone to one of the royal palaces in Madrid (I don't remember now if it was the Royal Palace or Aranjuez) and that he did not like seeing the books that were sold in the shop of that royal place. Alongside the usual catalogues of works of art and collector's items, the visitor guides, the obligatory hagiographies of the Hispanic monarchs and some historical novels, there were a series of titles that are presented as history books, when they are works with a cynical and unashamed ideological burden, authentic manuals of the most outdated Spanish nationalism. My friend's anger (do you think that in places of the National Heritage they should sell these things?) made me remember that four years ago I too had been surprised by the book offer at the Royal Monastery of El Escorial shop. I took note of it, in case it was a good time to comment on it one day. There were pieces like La leyenda negra, historia del odio a España, by Alberto G. Ibáñez, Imperiofobia y leyenda negra: Roma, Rusia, Estados Unidos y el Imperio Español, by María Elvira Roca Barea, and La Reconquista contada para escépticos, by Juan Eslava Galán. All these books are the literary version of junk food: they also sell by the bucketload even if they are unhealthy. If you have ever leafed through any of these titles (for the sake of my mental health I have never read one in its entirety), you will already know that, even though they are presented as new contributions to the historiography of Spain, they rarely exceed the level of a brother-in-law-style byproduct intended to fuel the crudest revisionism. Some do it with a humorous and casual tone, others with a pseudo-academic veneer to disguise the crudest manipulations. The common denominator of all of them is an ultramontane nationalism resistant to any filter of reason. The problem, however, is not so much that at the royal sites (which are public institutions of the State, be warned) they sell this mental junk, but that you cannot find the alternative there, works with a minimum of rigor and with a more hygienic narrative. Because we are talking about a public institution that, it is assumed, must help to educate, or at least inform with veracity, its citizens. At that table in El Escorial, the most 'alternative' thing I saw was Defendiendo a España: verdades y leyendas de nuestra historia, by the British Hispanist Henry Kamen. I would bet anything that in no store in the places that make up the Patrimonio Nacional will we ever find a book like the one recommended to me by my friend Ismael Pelegrí (he is never wrong), and which I have read with fascination this summer: Una i eterna. Sobre el nacionalisme espanyol, by Ferran Garcia-Oliver. It is an extraordinary exploration of the roots, development, and perpetuation, right up to the present day, of the construction of the great nationalist myth of Spain. It turns out that the Patrimonio Nacional is in reality Patrimonio Nacionalista, even in the times of the gobierno más progresista de la historia. All of this makes one quite pessimistic regarding the possibilities of a hypothetical reform of Spain, or at the very least of the conception that Spain has of itself. It is frightening the number of people who, deep down, continue to see Spain as an empire diminished by the fault of the everlasting foreign conspiracy, with the complicity of the successive representatives of the internal anti-Spain: Jews, Moors, Reds, Freemasons, separatists, faggots, and other degenerates. Cyclically, the intelligentsia of Spain takes it upon itself to put things back in their place, to revive, with new voices but always with the same music, the only history of Spain that can save the pride of being Spanish and very Spanish. The editorial secretions we have discussed are only an epidermal eruption of a much deeper disease. The state of infoxicated opinion caused by the great diffusion given to this type of book – many of its authors are regulars on radio talk shows and certain TV channels – helps to understand why Spain finds it so difficult to understand the terrible human drama that has been experienced in Ceuta for a long month now, and why the Spanish nationalist outcry overrides any humanitarian discourse, which becomes anecdotal. How is it possible that state funerals have not been organized for the victims of this tragedy? The discourse of anti-Spain is resurfacing. The enemy is always the other, and the victim is Spain, not the poor migrants (minors, invaders?), sick and starving, thrown onto the streets and beaches of Ceuta. Spanish nationalism always needs an 'a por ellos' to maintain its narrative. Nine years ago it was the Catalans. Now it is the Africans whom misery pushes to flee towards the north. None of the books we mentioned ever provide the keys to truly understand the history of Spain, with all its contradictions. They never explain the truth of what happened in Morocco during the time of the Spanish protectorate, a hundred years ago. A colonial conflict that was never resolved, that is never wanted to be faced, and that still lingers. And because it is never explained, we do not understand anything.

Walter Benjamin taught us that works of art, when seen reproduced in a book or on a postcard, lose their ‘aura’. It is obvious that a reproduction can be very good, even absolutely faithful to the original colors and sizes –in the case of a painting–, or that the observer can get a very thorough idea of what, for example, the Mona Lisa is. But a reproduction of La Gioconda is not the original, because the original has the aforementioned 'aura', which comes to it from that theorized 'distance': the original has traversed time, and often also space, and appears before us in a place, without losing either its mystery or its authority. The concept of aura, then, is back in fashion now, it seems due to young people who meet to compete in fascinating and a bit grotesque 'aura battles', which first must be cultivated, or 'farmed', as they say, making an English verb their own, mainly learned from video games. Aura is cultivated because through battles or clashes between different young people, it is achieved that the social perception that others have of one's own charisma, style, presence, confidence, or the ability to show oneself as 'cool'. But young people are sharper than it seems; we must want to go beyond the blind and blunt criticism that many make on social media to end up understanding 'the game', because all of this is too revealing. Often one just needs to take a little care. Because the more aura you want to have, the less you have, or the more it seems you want to act cool and charismatic, the more your true colors show and you lose the game completely. I would not say that within the literary field things work in a very different way: there are those who have aura and those who do not, and no one seems more grotesque or dispensable than those who want above all to cultivate aura, that is, to start pulling strings or pushing buttons to appear to have greatness or insight or grace, when precisely if one had all that, one would not have to do anything, because we would already be there. The game or irony is competing for something for which one should not want the victory, because just by wanting it –or by exhibiting that desire– they can no longer give it to you. The winner must be the one who seems to want it the least, and at the same time the one who does things that, for one reason or another, end up fascinating the public the most. Now the aura is quantified, as Benjamin also taught us to do, who knew how to see which things were or were not 'authentic'. And this is where art returns, because all of it is pure simulation: one must make it look like one is doing nothing, no effort, or that the way of dressing, walking, dancing, or looking are not the result of hours of trial and error. If for Benjamin the aura was destroyed because of technology, these young people have learned that technology is the only way in which they can cultivate it. Art was unrepeatable, but the aura that is now sought to be had ends up being nothing more than a reputation for singularity produced through repetition. Art says nothing to them, surely, but what they do is nothing more than seek, in a more or less showy way, the artistic experience.

The situation is especially worrying in Reading Comprehension, where the Islands fall to 441 points, 31 less than in 2022, but the decline is also notable in Mathematics, with 449 points (-22), and in Science, with 471 (-9). In tests where a difference of 20 points is approximately equivalent to one academic year, the magnitude of the drop is difficult to ignore. More than half of the students do not reach, for example, level 2 of scientific competence, the threshold that PISA considers basic. The data, in themselves, do not explain why this is happening. But they do force us to look at what has changed inside the classrooms and also outside of them.
