The LGTBIQ+ entity Ben Amics has requested from the Palma City Council "dignified" administrative deadlines that allow for planning the 2027 Pride festival and all related activities months in advance. Likewise, it has asked the City Council to promote "clear, stable, and sufficiently resourced" municipal LGTBIQ+ policies.

The Palma City Council approved this Wednesday in a governing board meeting the ideas competition for the Palma Botanical Garden. The project, worth 15 million euros, is born with the will to grow by incorporating new natural spaces into the city. The first will be El Carnatge and, later on, gardens or estates from other administrations and even from private ownership can also be added through agreements.

Begoña Gómez, wife of the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, has decided to change lawyers as the legal case against her enters the pre-trial phase. Mallorcan criminal lawyer Jaime Campaner will now take over her defense in the proceedings in which she is charged with alleged crimes of influence peddling and embezzlement.

The Human Rights Commission of the Balearic Islands Bar Association has condemned the police charges following Sunday's demonstration in Palma under the slogan 'Mallorca, at the limit' and has called for an independent and effective judicial investigation into the injuries caused to about twenty people and those responsible for ordering and carrying out these assaults.

The President of the Government, Marga Prohens, has taken advantage of the meeting with the Spanish President, Pedro Sánchez, to place the debate on the limits of the tourism model at the center of the Balearic agenda. The meeting comes after the historic demonstration against tourist overcrowding held in Palma, a mobilization that organizers estimated at 70,000 people, and which has reinforced the discussion on the Balearic Islands' capacity to cope with the current volume of visitors. After the meeting, Prohens defended that the policies promoted by her Executive respond to the demands expressed in the streets. "The policies that this Government is promoting are precisely in line with what is being asked for," she stated.

The Mallorca Train Users Association has asked Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca and the Government to maintain usual frequencies throughout August, considering it "absolutely unjustifiable" for a cut to occur during August.

In 2017, Blanca and Òscar set off with two bicycles to travel the world. They cycled to Athens, where they took a flight towards Cape Town. The Government has asked hotels this Tuesday to encourage clients to watch the solar eclipse on August 12 from their accommodations and to avoid private vehicle travel. The request is part of the planned operation to reduce mobility during the afternoon. As previously communicated, car access to the Serra de Tramuntana will also be restricted, with exceptions for residents, workers, and people staying or with reservations in establishments in the area.

Nearly 150 teachers and ANPE union representatives have gathered this Tuesday at the headquarters of the Ministry of Education and the territorial delegations of Menorca and Ibiza to demand the full recovery of extraordinary payments and the implementation of a difficult coverage supplement for teachers in Mallorca. According to the union, which called for the protest, around a hundred teachers participated in the gathering in Mallorca, while about thirty attended in Menorca and fifteen in Ibiza.

One of the more than twenty people who were injuries during the police charges with which the demonstration against tourist saturation on Sunday in Palma ended is still hospitalized. The affected parties are now considering the possibility of filing a collective complaint against the National Police officers who participated in the operation. This was announced this Tuesday by one of the spokespersons for the platform Menys Turisme, Més Vida, Jaume Pujol, during the rally that brought together nearly half a thousand people in front of the government delegation to demand the resignation of the delegate in the Balearic Islands, Alfonso Rodríguez.

Approximately 400 people have demanded this Tuesday the resignation of the Spanish government delegate, Alfonso Rodríguez, and of the police officials for the charges by the National Police against participants of the anti-saturation demonstration on July 26. The protest took place in front of the state government delegation, which the Police had secured by land and air: four National Police vans, a dozen officers and civil guards at the door monitored the demonstrators, in addition to the images captured by a helicopter and a drone that flew over the area during the two hours that the protest lasted, peaceful and civic at all times.

The Government and the Consell de Mallorca have launched the implementation of shared electronic health records in residences, both public and private, with the aim that residents' information can be consulted by both healthcare professionals and residential center staff.

There is an image that better than any other summarizes what happened on Sunday: a massive and profoundly civic demonstration that ends with people injured by a violent police action. The question is inevitable: who had an interest in the narrative ceasing to be about mass tourism and becoming about public order?

One of the most emblematic bars of traditional Mallorcan cuisine says goodbye. Ca'n Biel Felip has announced the definitive closure of the restaurant, in a publication on social networks, after more than thirty years of trajectory, a decision that the establishment itself admits "is never easy". The venue, recognized this year with the award for the best classic bar in the Balearic Islands, is now negotiating a possible succession so that the business can continue with a new stage. According to reports, the main reason for the closure is the lack of generational succession.

The demonstration that this Sunday marched through the center of Palma ended with moments of tension and charges by the National Police at the entrances to Les Voltes, after more than two hours of mobilization without incidents. Several people were injured by baton blows during the police intervention, which occurred when hundreds of demonstrators demanded to be able to access the final point of the route, where the manifesto was being read.

The Minister of Education and Universities, Antoni Vera, is the member of the Government with the highest expenditure on official travel among the ministries of the Executive during the year 2026. According to the documentation published on the Transparency Portal, his department had allocated 11,267.49 euros to travel until May 21, the highest figure of the Executive if only the eleven ministries are taken into account. In total, these departments accumulate an expenditure of 45,340.81 euros. If the Presidency is also included, the total amounts to 60,383.58 euros, as the president, Marga Prohens, is the one who registers the highest individual item, with 15,042.77 euros allocated to official travel until June 25.

Demonstrations are not only held in the street. They also contend with the aftermath, when a media and political narrative is imposed about what happened. And, after the police charges of 26-J, the narrative of tourist saturation has been sidelined in the media by another debate much more comfortable for Marga Prohens' Government. It is important not to lose focus, because the president is one of the main people responsible for responding to the problems that the tourism model generates in the daily lives of the citizens of the Balearic Islands. The day after one of the most massive protests ever seen in the Islands, Prohens has not felt the need to face the situation, nor to give explanations about the lack of management, nor to confront her unfulfilled promises. The president has spoken about the charges, has demanded explanations from the Spanish government delegate, Alfonso Rodríguez, and has remarked that she respects the right to demonstrate, as if that were not a given.

The Federation of Hotel Employers of Mallorca (FEHM) has called this Monday to "act" and "leave polarization behind" after Sunday's massive demonstration against tourist overcrowding. The entity's executive vice-president, María José Aguiló, has assured that the sector shares the social concerns expressed by protesters during the demonstration, but has warned that the debate about the future of the Islands "should not be reduced solely to tourist degrowth".

The Palma City Council has enabled an accreditation system for access to Playa de Palma on the day of the eclipse (August 12), for vehicles of residents and workers and clients of establishments in the area. From 12 noon, the roundabouts and accesses to Playa de Palma will be closed to the general public: only residents with a parking space, workers, public transport, taxis, Uber, and buses responsible for transferring clients from the hotel to the airport will be able to access.

The National Police attributes the charges made on Sunday at the end of the demonstration against tourist saturation to a "radical minority". Police sources consulted by Europa Press assure that a group integrated within the tens of thousands of participants threw stones, cobblestones, and sticks at the agents, four of whom were injured.

Born in Montuïri in 1944, Antònia Verger Jaume Sopeta is one of those anonymous but key figures in the local history of Pla de Mallorca and, in this case, Montuïri. Antònia Verger was for many years the lady of the Puig or of Cas Carboner, later. Without realizing it, she was a leader, a reference for other women who in the last quarter of the last century too often did not escape household chores. Verger began like this, not in vain when she is asked about her studies, she explains that she managed to take exams at the Institute of Felanitx, but, "the boys continued their studies and the girls, as was usual at that time, ended up doing household chores or as seamstresses". It was at the beginning of the seventies – and not without difficulties, as you will see in the interview – that she embarked, together with her husband, Biel Bennàssar Mayol Carboner, on the adventure of managing the bar and restaurant of Puig de Sant Miquel. In this conversation, Verger reviews from the beginning the success of her cuisine to the tensions and the social transformation that, without knowing it, it represented for the women of the town.

The delegate of the Spanish government in the Balearic Islands, Alfonso Rodríguez, has distanced himself from the police action at the demonstration against tourist saturation, which he described as "disproportionate" in relation to the risk of a protest marked by "exemplary civic behavior". "Police charges depend on the "in situ operation, they are not decided by this delegate. The use of violence did not adjust to the risk," he stated this Monday, after the organizers of the protest and MÉS per Mallorca called for his resignation.

In early 1993 died Pedro Masaveu Peterson, the man who had accumulated the greatest fortune in the history of Spain, around 350,000 million pesetas which, converted to euros and without applying the effect of inflation, would be more than 2,100 million. His name was (and still is) unknown to most, and even more so his image, because no one would have recognized him on the street (it is known that he was a voluminous man and sported a nineteenth-century beard). To give us an idea of the volume of his assets, it should be known that a few months after his death, another great financier of the time died, Emilio Botín-Sanz de Sautuola y López, president of Banco Santander between 1950 and 1986, and his heirs had to pay half of what the Masaveus had paid for inheritance tax. A tax bill of this amount could not go unnoticed by public administrations, and that is why the autonomous communities of Madrid and Asturias spent more than a decade litigating to keep the prize, in a struggle that the Asturians finally won.

Not a single graffiti. Not a broken window. Not a single argument with the hundreds of tourists who were strolling through the center of Palma. Tens of thousands of people paraded this Sunday for more than two hours through the streets of the city in one of the most massive demonstrations in recent years without any incident occurring. The contrast with the end of the protest was absolute. When thousands of people were trying to reach Les Voltes to hear the reading of the manifesto, the National Police blocked the entrances and, a few minutes later, charged against the demonstrators with batons. Several videos recorded by attendees also show detonations during the police intervention.

The two drowning deaths of two three-year-old children in swimming pools in Mallorca in less than a week have reopened the debate on safety measures in houses dedicated to tourist rentals. Beyond the responsibilities that the investigations determine, maritime rescue professionals, such as pool lifeguards, agree that there are actions that could reduce the risk of an oversight ending in tragedy.

Tens of thousands of people, up to 70,000 according to the organization and 25,000 according to the always conservative calculations of the National Police, have taken the center of Palma and have shouted all kinds of slogans against the excess of tourism, with one idea above all others: a significant part of the island's society is tired of the collapse. The end of the demonstration turned out to be a real chaos because the planned space, les Voltes, has absolutely insufficient capacity for such a massive demonstration. The Police have closed the accesses to les Voltes, which has caused a strong confrontation among the demonstrators, because, after walking for more than an hour, most of the demonstrators have not managed to reach the end and have been dispersed throughout the Parc de la Mar, which has been filled with banners.

Another Mobo chronicler commented on Friday at certain early morning hours about the fear of falling into mass clichés to explain this farewell. Frankly, I would never write (and the other chronicler wouldn't either, I'd say) that "you don't know what you have until you lose it." It is ungrateful and unconscious. And we are not like that: we knew what we were losing in 2013 when Antònia Font announced a retirement; we know that, after Mobo, there will be a void for alternative music, that a space for closeness and recognition (identification?) will be missing; we know what we will lose if we continue living on mass tourism, wild and bare with everyday life, and since we know it, this Sunday afternoon we will be in Palma at the demonstration against tourist overcrowding, in favor of a dignified life.

Saturday evening. The end of 10 years of Mobofest is approaching. Around 11:30 PM, practically everyone was heading towards the main stage to accompany the "group of our lives," they said, the group "that changed everything for music in Mallorca and in Catalan," it was commented. Yesterday more than ever, the public could not miss it.

The vice-dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) and professor of Administrative Law, Joana Maria Socias, died this Saturday, as reported by the University. The university community and the rector, Jaume Carot, have expressed their condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the professor.

Just a few days ago, Mallorca was on orange alert for temperatures that could reach 39 degrees. This Sunday, however, the island faces a completely different situation: the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has activated an orange alert for rain and storms, while the 112 Emergency service has raised the Meteobal plan alert to severity index 1 (IG-1).

Directed by Joan Porcel, this thriller documentary has just won two Silver Biznagas in Malaga. It will be screened for the first time in Mallorca at the Atlàntida Film Festival.

“I remember we used to come with the little motorbike from Sóller, with friends. We would go down to Cala Deià on the motorbike almost to the beach and our little boats were on the sand all summer. There were people from Deià, from Sóller, and a few tourists. What times…”. Tomeu Ferragut, a man from Sóller, remembers it, and today he doesn't even consider going to what is one of his favorite spots on the Mallorcan coast: “Every year Narcís Serra, from Felipe González's government, used to show up. We knew his bodyguards. And we used to joke. Everything was very familiar”.

With her face hidden behind a skull mask and dressed as a peasant woman, Madò Farta began to make noise —despite being a mute figure shrouded in mystery— on social media in June of this year. Since then, this figure, halfway between a bogart and a feminist water spirit, has appeared both alone and supporting other calls, in most —if not all— of the protests against tourist overcrowding convened throughout Mallorca.

The Balearic left must be a prodigious political force. It has been in opposition for more than three years and still manages to collapse roads, increase housing costs, saturate beaches, and fill the airport. There are governments that barely leave a legacy. The Pact, on the other hand, seems to have discovered the secret of political immortality.

Tomeu Penya, 77, speaks candidly to ARA Balears: “I want my current state of mind to be very clear. I am very sad. As a young man, I would never have imagined that Mallorca's future would be like it is now, an island full of cement and tourists, with saturated roads and residents who cannot afford housing. For this summer's concerts, I'm considering singing ‘Trenc’ again, which I dedicated four decades ago to the emblematic beach of Campos that now, unfortunately, is once again under threat”. ‘Trenc’ was the debut of the country singer from Vilafranca as an environmental activist at 35 years old. It is one of the most outstanding songs from his third album Coverbos (1984).

No other monarch has been so mythologized, idealized, and glorified as James I the Conqueror –well, perhaps the emeritus king, in his good times–: knight king, warrior, valiant, sensible, wise, generous, good Christian... Of course, of all this, half of half, and more in reference to women, whom he used and abandoned when they no longer served his interests. Some time ago I went to a party full of people from Manacor with a friend from out of town. A guy who wanted to meet her asked her to repeat “What color is Saint James’ white horse?” This apparently harmless phrase is a shibboleth, a formula that characterizes members of a linguistic group because it repeats a sound unknown to speakers of another language or dialect. Curiously, the word ‘xibòlet’ comes from the Bible, from the book of Judges, in which it is explained how forty-two thousand Ephraimites died for not being able to pronounce like our ‘x’ the initial consonant of the word, which they emitted as an ‘s’, which differentiated them from the rest of the Hebrews.

The Consell de Mallorca has begun the installation of the first cameras in the network with 210 control devices that will monitor the roads to prevent illegal races and control the entry of vehicles to the island.

A police inspection carried out on Thursday in Cala Millor, Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, ended with the closure of a restaurant with people working in an irregular situation, 13-hour shifts every day, workers living on the premises in poor conditions, and multiple sanitary deficiencies.

Palma will once again experience this Sunday, July 26, a new demonstration against tourist overcrowding. The mobilization, called by the platform Menys Turisme, Més Vida (Less Tourism, More Life) with the slogan 'Mallorca at its limit', will begin at 7 p.m. in Plaça d’Espanya and will tour several of the main streets in the center of Palma.

The call with the slogan ‘Mallorca on the limit’, scheduled for this Sunday, July 26, does not come after a specific episode. It is the result of a year marked by an escalation of mobilizations against the tourism model and, in recent weeks, by growing tension between citizen movements and institutions.

The most interesting music festival held in the Balearic Islands since the time of the brilliant and chaotic Isladencanta is undoubtedly Mobo. Talent, musical innovation, maximum respect for local production and quality. Far from other commercial proposals, which base their lineup on artists who can draw the biggest crowds, even if, all in all, it makes no sense. Nothing to say if these massive festivals like Mallorca Live, which we have all attended when we liked an artist, also exist. They have to be there.

The general secretary of the Palma Socialist Group, Iago Negueruela, has been proclaimed the PSOE candidate for the mayoralty of Palma for the municipal elections of 2027. He has gone from being the right-hand man of the Government of Francina Armengol and head of the Parliamentary Group to leading the party – since March 2025 – in the capital of the Balearic Islands. He assures that he is taking the step towards municipal politics because he considers that "Palma is not well" and defends that a change of course is needed after three years of PP government with Vox.

It has been more than two years since the Government promised "bold" measures against saturation, but the application of President Marga Prohens' commitments has been uneven. The Executive has deployed measures to regulate tourist rentals, but the fiscal initiatives for containment announced this legislature – such as the Sustainable Tourism Tax, the water levy, and for rental cars – have not materialized. The containment advocated by the Executive is not reflected, at the moment, in the arrival figures: in 2025, a new record was broken with more than 19 million tourists in the Balearic Islands. "We understand the discomfort," said the first vice-president, Antoni Costa, about Sunday's demonstration against saturation: "We can be told that the measures are insufficient (...), but we have taken them." Which of the Executive's promises have been applied, which have been half-done, and which have not been fulfilled?

Les Alqueries is a beautiful hamlet in the municipality of Santa Eugènia, located on the northeast side of the village and crossed by an old transhumance route, the Camí de Muntanya. From the Middle Ages until the early 20th century, the mountain paths allowed the passage of the herds from the large estates that spent the summer in the mountains (estivada) and the winter in the lands of the Pla and Migjorn (hivernada) of Mallorca.

Six people have been seriously injured and had to be transferred to various hospital centers in Palma after a multiple accident involving six vehicles this Friday afternoon on the ring road.

In the year 2000, 10 million tourists arrived in the Balearic Islands. In the year 2026, 20 million will arrive. For years, some political leaders tried to make us believe that tourist saturation was just a perception.
