Since April 16, long queues at town halls have become the image of the extraordinary regularization promoted by the Spanish government. They have been preparing documentation for months, but until the last minute they did not know that they would also need a vulnerability certificate, and this partly explains the saturation of the system. "I don't understand why they want it, if all of us who are undocumented are vulnerable," reflects Abdou, a 32-year-old Senegalese. Despite this, the priority is clear. "Even if we have to lose work days: papers are papers," assures Khalid.

The extraordinary regularization of immigrants has become a new front of political confrontation between the State government and various right-wing autonomous executives, including that of the Balearic Islands. The debate, legitimate in a democracy, is today a war of attrition that runs the risk of dehumanizing a reality that affects thousands of people. In the Islands, it is estimated that more than 30,000 people could benefit from this process. These are not abstract figures, they are lives that depend, to a large extent, on being able to escape administrative irregularity.

And even more so when the elderly people of Ciutat still remember that right here, in Hort del Rei, there were the Líric theatre, the Alhambra hotel, the mythical Riskal café... The truth, however, is that with the demolition of those buildings, what had already been a green area in the Middle Ages was recovered, only this time it was not done for the enjoyment of a monarch, but for the entire citizenry – and tourists, of course. We recall the history of Hort del Rei as sixty years have passed since the project that the architect Gabriel Alomar Esteve made in 1966 and which envisaged the recovery of that space.

As the popular saying goes, “he who eats snails for Saint Mark's Day enjoys good health for free” and it is customary to eat them on this day. Some say that eating snails for Saint Mark's Day prevents being touched, that is, falling ill in one way or another. My great-grandmother used to eat one raw every year and she did well, until she was 93. In my town, they don't have snail feasts for Saint Mark's Day, but rather they are typical for the Cross, on May 3rd, a little later. This day is a big celebration in the Camarata neighborhood, and all the locals who have at least one leg go down to eat snails with family and friends.

He was undoubtedly the one who turned the concert into a spectacle of dimensions that corresponded to his own. Just after the ornithological composition, the first major highlight of the program arrived, with pianist Olga Kern as the great protagonist, to perform the Piano and Orchestra Concerto in A minor op. 54, by Robert Schumann. The first movement began, with a very solid, somewhat rocky style, and a very firm pulse, from the decisive entry of the piano, with a martial and powerful succession of descending chords, to reach the polyhedral cadence of the finale, from where the coloratura of the composition increased, with as much precision as elegance. Her performance was raising the level and delicacy, as for example, with the Andantino grazioso, a delightful dialogue between the orchestra and the piano that, little by little, turned into a tender and subtle monologue of the solo instrument. Kern made clear her mastery and ability to suggest all this series of variations and styles that Schumann incorporated into the score, in a very novel way for its time. The soloist, once again, resumed the energetic tone of the beginning, in an impetuous third movement, when, all of a sudden, she established a delightful new dialogue, this time with the oboe, as a prelude to the exceptional final coda that can only be described as exceptional and which served the protagonist to receive the enthusiastic applause of the audience. As it should be and as everyone expected, there was an encore, first a Prelude, by Claude Debussy, which never disappoints or leaves one indifferent. Impeccable. And in response to the plea in the form of an ovation, another little gem, by Nikolai Myaskovsky, a piano arrangement by Joseph Horovitz.

If you are expert clubbers you will have recognized the calendar ofopenings of the Ibizan clubs, a true marathon for party acrobats. Impossible to be at all of them. Or is it? “Most people go to at least two or three parties”, explains the manager of the Ocio de Ibiza association, José Luis Benítez. The trip to Ibiza has to be amortized. Most of the tickets have already been sold for weeks; in total, about 30,000 tickets, a figure that is also the total capacity of the Ibizan clubs. Yes, in Ibiza there can be about 30,000 people –legally– partying every day. This year, the clubs have once again anticipated the openings –traditionally they had always been in May– aware that they are the ones who kick off the Ibizan season. And it works: Iberia Express has had to put on 12 additional flights between Madrid and Ibiza due to the openings. The dancing machine will not stop until the first or second week of October; in case you are interested, the tickets for the closings are also on sale.

We think it is necessary to reflect on this, that images should also serve us to draw conclusions about the world we live in”. This is how Xavier Fiol, director of the festival, defines it, who, together with the general coordinator, Montserrat Torras, and with the advice of Xisco Bonnín and Horacio Fernández, has shaped a program that includes exhibitions, talks, guided tours, a reading club dedicated to photobooks, and a film series that will take place during May at the Teatre Sa Societat in Calvià.

One of the thousands scattered across the Mallorcan geography that have defined its landscape and, therefore, its culture and identity for centuries. Specifically, since the end of the 18th century. Filtered through Joan Fontcuberta (Barcelona, 1955), however, it is many other things, without ceasing to be, precisely, an almond tree. It is a sculptural figure, which alludes to a human presence, perhaps the naked body of a woman, and at the same time it is a kind of zombie, an anonymous and forgotten vestige: a part of the remains left by the Xylella fastidiosa catastrophe in the Mallorcan countryside. The poem also includes more vital verses, in which he disorderly reviews some events of his life.

https://en.arabalears.cat/misc/need-wings-to-fly_129_5718185.html

With his first film (The 400 Blows), François Truffaut began a cinematic cycle starring a fictional character (Antoine Doinel, alter ego of Truffaut himself) who embodied different films, always played by the same actor (Jean-Pierre Léaud). From this filmed continuum, the beloved French filmmaker was able to explore the complex and exciting paths of a human being's life. I thought of this artistic example while reading Pere Joan Martorell's new and ambitious novel, Nits sense ales (Nights without wings) from Pagès Editors, as through its pages we can once again encounter a character who has starred in other works by the Lloseta writer, such as the Llibre de les revelacions (Book of Revelations) (Editorial Moll, 2007), because Amador is, in effect, Martorell's correspondent in possible parallel and quantum universes. In a literary adventure that connects him with Solenoide, by Mircea Cărtărescu, Pere Joan Martorell does not recreate his life in the mirror of fiction, but reinvents it from turning points that could have occurred, and thus recovers Amador, a psychologist and writer in a center dedicated to behavioral disorders. But every story begins with a turning point, that is, with a change, a disorder, and it is here when the appearance of Judith, a young woman marked by a past of brutal violence and abuse, activates a narrative mechanism of high emotional tension. Her voice, which emerges with difficulty between shame and urgency, challenges the therapist and destabilizes him to the point of forcing him to confront his own limits. It is then that the work unfolds like a progressive infernal descent towards the most opaque zones of the mind and society, with a highly symbolic language and images of powerful impact. The world that is drawn around the characters, with the presence of a sordid network of domination and exploitation, is not merely a setting that draws from a real case: it acts as an amplifier of internal conflicts. But what truly sustains the novel is its formidable ability to show how evils are not only external, but above all intimate, embedded in memory and the body. Martorell develops a story that skillfully moves through the margins of moral ambiguity, exploring the fine line that separates compassion from desire. With a ductile and intensely expressive prose, which knows how to alternate sharp cuts with moments of restorative delicacy, Nits sense ales, by Pere Joan Martorell, is a striking account of vulnerability and the search for redemption, a novel that delves without concessions into the most fragile and uncomfortable territories of human experience, where wound and desire are confused and where the need for empathy becomes almost a matter of survival.

Each piece of clothing represents a child who has not entered class today. The action, organized by families at 9:00 AM — the usual start time of the school day — is part of the strike they began on Tuesday not to bring their children to the center, in protest of the presence of Miquel Roldán, a teacher with a final ruling for harassment of a minor ex-student. The stoppage has massive support, and today 61% of students were absent, one point more than this Thursday.

The pull effect, the collapse of public services, the criminalization and instrumentalization of women's rights as an excuse to exhibit racist behavior are not the exclusive domain of Vox, with a PP concerned with capturing all the 'off-center' and right-wing vote it can in the next elections. "It's not enough, now we want much more: more majorities, more stability, fewer obstacles, fewer stumbling blocks," summarized the president of the Govern, Marga Prohens, on Thursday during the presentation of her candidacy to once again lead the Balearic PP. The popular leader brandished the flag of freedom, another usual mantra when it comes to exalting the party's values.

As reported by the Superior Headquarters of the Police of the Balearic Islands, the events occurred in the early hours of Sunday to Monday, when several patrols from the Citizen Assistance Group were alerted to an assault outside a leisure venue in the municipality.

The meeting took place after a particularly tense day at the center, in which approximately 60% of the students did not attend class as a sign of rejection of the presence of Roldán, convicted of child harassment. This situation has intensified the pressure on the educational administration, which is now forced to find an immediate solution to a crisis that has shaken the educational community and reopened a debate on the criteria for incorporating staff into schools. On Monday, the center's families will meet with the Director General of Early Childhood, Attention to Diversity and Educational Improvement, Neus Riera, to explain their demands, which include getting Roldán removed from teaching.

The scene took place in the space that one of the main bookstores has set up for Sant Jordi in Plaça d'Espanya in Palma.
https://en.arabalears.cat/opinion/the-children-of-the-moon_129_5715974.html

While in the streets of the neighborhoods and villages of Mallorca we relived the Passion of Jesus Christ and from the chimneys the scents of the "panades" (a type of pastry) and "rubiols" (a type of sweet pastry) emerged, thousands of visitors and tourists were descending at full speed, with vans and black SUVs, from the Tizi n'Tichka pass towards the desert, there, in the immense snowy mountain ranges of the African Atlas. What were those visitors looking for?Through the vehicles' speakers, catchy, modern, and rhythmic music played, a little hypnotic. It was by the Amazigh group Tarwa N Ayur, with the voice of singer Sarah Mou. That mysterious afrofusion rhythm would accompany them to the dunes of Erg Chebbi – known for their golden sand and for being among the highest in Morocco –, just outside Merzouga and Khamlia. The young guides and drivers, many of them Amazigh, while driving, hummed the lyrics that Sarah Mou was setting to music; a song titled Amoudou especially motivated them.Let's walk together on this journey, children of the earth and of the moon,we carry the strength of fathers, and not even the desert wind will stop us.Before 1936, route 9, which goes from Marrakech to Ouarzazate, did not exist. The French colonial troops – with the 4th Regiment of the Foreign Legion – took the lead in this work, which lasted a good handful of years. Obviously, the Amazigh population of the immense and white mountains threw themselves into it.Without the road, there were only narrow paths and rock passages, suitable only for mules and donkeys, because camels were too cold during the frequent snowfalls. For centuries, the slow caravans of the children of the moon had to risk themselves in silence through the snow to bring their goods to Marrakesh and Casablanca. That road had colonial purposes of dominion, but the current one brings two worlds closer, especially two cultures – the Arab and the Amazigh – separated by nature, tradition, and identity. It should be remembered that the Amazigh people are much older than the arrival of the Arabs in these territories. They managed – the Amazigh – an almost unique feat: after the arrival and embrace of Islam, they managed to have their own Koranic school; we know them as the followers of Malek or Malikis, in which their identity, tradition, and customs have had their own space that has endured to this day.Talking about civilizations would be too daring, but we can talk about culture. The route to the black desert, the city of Zagora and the Todra gorges opened the doors to the knowledge of Amazigh culture for us. So intimate, attractive, different, and mysterious for us Westerners. In our case, the Amazigh people of the Rif had arrived in Mallorca around the year 1981 approximately, and their number continued to increase over the years. We must point out, however, that the Amazigh people do not form a strictly homogeneous group. Geography and history have played their part and have fostered nuances among them. To understand this, and since we were talking about music at the beginning, we can use it as an example of these specific traits. The music of the southern Amazigh people –Agadir, desert, Atlas– has slow, almost hypnotic rhythms; repetition is frequent with a mantra effect, and the atmosphere it generates is open, contemplative, almost spiritual. The voices are soft but deep – that of Sarah Mou–, singing to the inner soul. The themes usually speak of the journey, the path through the desert of life, of the land, the people, time, and the moon. The group Tarwa N Ayur –the children of the moon– would be a good representative of this archetype. On the other hand, in the Rif region –our Amazigh people of Mallorca– they tend to have faster, more marked rhythms, less repetitive, more direct and lively. They are usually more festive, even combative, types of music. The voices are usually strong, assertive. They speak of daily life, emigration, social difficulties, and a more explicit identity. At this point I like to recall that the name of the mosque in sa Pobla is Ibno Amazic –sons of the Amazigh people–; obviously, when officials from the Moroccan consulate in Palma arrive for a visit, they raise their eyebrows and wrinkle their noses. Differences enrich a people; homogenizations kill it. While the south sings and looks inward, the Amazigh of the north sing outward, away from themselves. Both employ metaphorical and evocative languages. Both refer to images of the moon, the wind, the path, difficulties, mountains, and the desert. When I was preparing this article, I was surprised by the little information available online about the musical ensemble and the soloist who accompanied us throughout the text. Curiously, they have developed part of their project in international circuits, always taking care and seeking songs deeply rooted in Amazigh culture, language, and spirituality. Now I understand that this fact explains many things. Many Amazigh artists prioritize the community, the people, and music above their own individual selves.I think, and I am convinced, that the sounds of the desert are imperceptible to our Western ears. We tend to listen and feel outwards and not inwards. Curiously, Saint Augustine of Hippo, most likely a 4th-century Berber, worked and preached from a thought in which the need for travel always leads inwards:	“Do not go outside; go inside yourself. In the inner man dwells truth.”A mystical thought and need, understood by the Amazigh people since antiquity. The Balearic people of Catalan culture feel identified with the Amazigh people; we understand each other. Two peoples, without a nation-state, with a clear linguistic and identity decline. In constant struggle for survival. Attacked by other peoples, with other ways of understanding the world, who need to expand and control their neighbors in order not to die. What were those visitors looking for? They were looking for the children of the moon.

https://en.arabalears.cat/opinion/they-will-be-the-young_129_5715968.html

Fifteen, perhaps? Twenty, at most? I haven't had a minimally documented and well-founded political consciousness for that many years, but I can't recall any time when the country's spirits have been so low. I lived through the eruption of social movements on Twitter, including the indignados; I participated as much as I could and more in the spectacular response of island society to the linguistic extermination attempts by the Government of José Ramón Bauzá; I witnessed, as a distant observer, the orange joy of the Valencian spring, and not many years ago I beat with the Catalan autumn and the self-determination referendum, the anti-repressive movement afterwards... And now? Where are we now, that the citizens of the Catalan Countries seem to be so discouraged?Everything indicates that the country is experiencing a moment of hangover from what we could have been or achieved and that could not be. And I'm not just referring to the independence of the Principality, which would have been a magnificent first step towards the constitution of a federal republic among the different Catalan Countries, but also to the progressive ideas proposed by the governments of the Valencian Country and the Balearic Islands which, whether due to a lack of consensus among the forces that composed them, or due to a lack of courage and decisiveness in moving forward, were not consolidated. The social use of the language seems to be at an all-time low, political debate is eaten away from top to bottom by hatred and resentment, and suddenly, in Mallorca and the Principality, two new supposedly self-centered forces (in Valencia, Vox is already in charge...) have begun to defend right and wrong the same exclusionary discourses of the global far-right.Something, however, tells me that there is hope, and that this time hope will come from one of the groups most judged and doubted throughout all time: those who will save the language (that is to say, the country) will be the young people. After the generation of heroes who in the seventies and eighties fought to establish our own laws and institutions that we still preserve today, and the subsequent wave of the 'baby boomers', who with all due love I say, thought they had paid for everything and now see that they haven't, a new batch of young people with drive has erupted throughout the territory. Initiatives like Acampallengua, not many days ago in Manacor, or the Correllengua Agermanat, which youth organizations from all over the linguistic domain have launched thanks to the spur and meeting point that has been the New Congress of Catalan Culture, make me think so. Or Sant Jordi per la Llengua, with demonstrations in different cities of the Principality, organized in large part, also, by organizations and unions led by youth.Yes: perhaps they, them, and him will be. They will do it from self-esteem and love for diversity, online or in assembly or in rounds of folk dance, and the others will not always understand them. The important thing, however, is that there is a generation that does not intend to give up, and with that, often, it is enough to start again.

It was a school practically made for the children of immigrants. We were all Spanish speakers and, in the classroom, Catalan didn't exist. In fact, we needed it, but they didn't teach it to us.

The spokesperson for Vox in the Balearic Parliament, Manuela Cañadas, announced this Wednesday that she has registered a non-binding proposal along the same lines. With this move, the far-right once again pulls the PP into its territory, forcing it to pronounce on an issue that makes it uncomfortable, as various popular leaders have already expressed, such as the Madrid president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso.

https://en.arabalears.cat/opinion/spring-had-price_129_5714853.html

It seems that these days we have once again had a bit – too much – of cultural controversy following the publication in Spanish of what we now consider to be Mercè Rodoreda's best novel. David Uclés, the recent star of Spanish literature (he has sold thirty editions of his first novel, and the second, winner of the Nadal prize, is selling quite well) writes an epilogue and even illustrates, rather unattractively, the cover of the work. Some opinion leaders have decided to criticize the proposal, as if Catalan literature could not be prefaced by Spanish authors, even though it is Uclés' success that makes it tempting for his name to accompany Rodoreda's novel for Spanish readers. Uclés, whether one likes what he writes or not (and it must be liked, because it sells) can serve to attract readers, in a country, Spain, where neither Rodoreda nor any Catalan has had much literary fortune writing in Catalan (but not the Catalans who have written in Spanish, from Gironella to Cercas passing through Mendoza…). Uclés, however, is still a symptom, and now a symbol. It doesn't matter if his literature is weak –as the best critics point out–: it sells. And because it sells, he is then given a prize like the Nadal, because he had already made a name for himself, even though it is known that when he was nobody, he tried to win it several times. We already know how it works, then: a prize is given to someone because they are already somebody, not because they have written a good book (everyone says it's nonsense). Before, however, things didn't work like that. Publishers intended to direct the public's taste, not to satisfy it or blindly conform to it. Literature, or rather the world of commercial books, is just one more branch of the attention economy, which right now is also shaping culture. Who grabs attention? Who is being talked about? Who manages to attract glances and focus conversations, or articles, even if it's to oppose them? Well, those we talk about manage to translate that attention into money, be it through literature or politics. This is trumpism, but it is also Rufián, who states these last days that he prefers to be on TikTok rather than in libraries; it is on TikTok where people spend more hours right now. And we know he is right, but at the same time we know he shouldn't be. There are very skillful people at knowing where to place themselves: they grasp what to say, what to do, with whom to relate to in order to capitalize on dispersed attention. Mendoza did it this week by speaking against Sant Jordi, and Uclés does it by approaching a reference that has never stopped being talked about: be it Rodoreda or a city of Barcelona reduced to a museum of cultural folklorisms, to t-shirt images, like the one he himself has created for the cover of La mort i la primavera. That all this be controversial or criticized favors him, curiously, needless to say much more than if it were excellent and, therefore, did not make anyone lift their eyes from the screen… Long live culture.

If last year two caparrots were premiered there, confirming its character as a traditional festival, this year the festival has begun almost a week earlier with a prior fair in the neighborhoods of the City. Nevertheless, the momentum of Book Day has also been felt outside Palma: throughout the Balearic Islands, numerous bookstores are preparing since February for one of the most important days of the year.

If you count all the care, tests, treatments, and interventions I've had throughout my life, since fortunately there haven't been many, the economic balance is favorable to IB-Salut. But I won't deny it: I've started to have little things. Unimportant trifles, parts that wear out from continuous use of the machinery. And since it's better to prevent than to cure, I've started to go for a few check-ups. Among the doctors who have visited me, there have been a couple of South Americans with whom I have had no problem when I addressed them in Catalan. They answer me in Spanish without any problem, nor do I. On the second visit, one of these doctors plucked up the courage to stammer in Catalan, and I encouraged him to continue because he was doing very well. The Charter of rights and duties of the healthcare user from the Government tells me that I have the right to obtain information, verbal and written, in understandable language and in the official language of the Balearic Islands that I choose. I have not asked the doctors who have attended me for anything more than what they have done: that they understand me when I address them in Catalan. Thank you very much. But to the public Health system, to the health administration, I do ask - I demand - that the documentation be delivered to me in Catalan: written appointment and referral letters, diagnostic reports, informed consents, analysis results, medication instructions, therapeutic advice. Well, no. Impossible.

The PSOE opts for greater interventionism in the housing market and has linked the aid package to measures to combat the soaring prices of rent and purchase of flats. The funds are distributed according to the actions of each territory: the Balearic Islands will receive 168 million from the package of 7,000 million euros recently approved by the Council of Ministers. The Minister of Housing, José Luis Mateo, has accused the Spanish government of wanting to "meddle" in regional competences, as it conditions the reception of funds on the application of policies such as the limit on rental prices. The rejection of the PP leaders to the design of these aids is unanimous, although, for now, they have not ruled out benefiting from them.

In the plenary session of the Parliament this Tuesday, the first vice-president and Minister of Economy and Finance, Antoni Costa, joined Sánchez's slogan without reservations: "We say no to war, no to any war, and no to a war that has consequences on the daily lives of the Islands".
