285,000 people living in Palma – two out of three, if we take the 430,000 inhabitants of 2023 as a reference – do not have access to green areas of more than one hectare, according to the report How to guarantee the right to nature?, which compares the green areas of cities according to the population's income and which was made public this Wednesday by Friends of the Earth. Income determines food, education, housing, opportunities, and also something as seemingly simple as living near a park. The entity's analysis is based on the recommendation of the World Health Organization, the 3-30-300 rule: being able to see 3 trees from the window, 30% vegetation cover in the neighborhood, and a park of at least one hectare no more than 300 meters away.Palma has large parks, but proximity vegetation is scarce in neighborhoods with higher population density, which are also those with lower incomes. "In the lower-income neighborhoods, the area of green space per inhabitant is lower than in higher-income areas due to population density," says the report, which notes that "the situation is especially worrying mainly for vulnerable people, who are the ones with less green space and fewer options to adapt to climate change," explains the head of Participation and Projects at Amics de la Terra Mallorca, Lucía Ami. These are people who do not have their "right to nature" guaranteed.

Socialist deputy Amanda Fernández has warned that the same company has provided services in previous years for summer activities and has requested to know what will happen this year with these services, which are on the verge of being activated. The closure of the kitchen, one of the main school catering companies in Mallorca and responsible for 45 school canteens across the island, has occurred just nine days before the end of the course and has forced an urgent reorganization of the canteen service in 33 educational centers, with the redistribution of nearly 2,000 daily menus.

This is the question that remains open after the Ministry of Health of the Balearic Islands decreed the precautionary closure of the central kitchen of the restaurant Can Arabí, a decision made on Monday, June 8, following a health inspection. The closure has had an immediate effect on the school canteen system: 33 educational centers had to be urgently reorganized and menus redistributed among various companies. In total, Can Arabí managed nearly 45 school canteens, many of them on a catering basis. That same Monday night, the Department of Education activated an emergency device to ensure that no center would be left without service.

The mayor of Calvià has signed a municipal decree due to the 2026 Football World Cup, which will take place between June 11 and July 19. The document establishes a series of rules aimed at reconciling the development of leisure activities with safety, citizen coexistence, and the rest of residents and tourists. The text establishes an exceptional time regulation for broadcasting certain matches. According to the City Council, through a statement, if a match starts within the establishment's ordinary opening hours, it will not be necessary to stop the activity of the premises or the terrace at the usual closing time, thus avoiding clients being left without seeing the end. Establishments will be able to extend closing time up to 15 minutes after the end of the match, including extra time and penalty shootouts. It is important to note that this time exception will apply exclusively to matches played by the national teams of Spain, Germany, England, and Scotland, in addition to the semi-final matches, the final, and the third-place play-off.Conversely, if the match starts at or after the official closing time of the public establishment, it will not be able to keep its doors open and must strictly adhere to the time stipulated in the ordinary license. The decree consolidates a series of coexistence rules that were already implemented during Eurocopa 2024, an event that took place with complete normality in Calvià under these same guidelines: in terraces and outdoor areas, from midnight the audio emission must be completely suppressed, and the volume will be set to zero. Only the visual signal of the matches may be broadcast to ensure the rest of neighbors and tourists.Likewise, screens and televisions must always be oriented towards the inside of establishments. The measure aims to prevent public space crowds that could hinder the passage of pedestrians and road traffic. The Calvià Town Hall warns that non-compliance with the provisions of this decree, as well as with the applicable Municipal Ordinances, will be subject to sanction. Therefore, establishment owners are appealed to collaborate in preventing any disturbance to safety and coexistence.

The operation, coordinated between the Local Police and the National Police, began at 12 noon and lasted for a large part of the day. One of the evicted, Bernardino, a 60-year-old Italian who was evicted, criticized being treated like a drug trafficker and commented to journalists: "Tonight I will sleep on the street, in this park, what a mess."

For decades, the prestige and recognition of teachers in our society have been in steady decline. A high school teacher is no longer more than a poor wretch in the eyes of too many people, it seems, who are despised by both the intelligent students, who finally realize the farce, and the lazy or dull ones, who oppose everything that involves rolling up one's sleeves. From politics, the profession has not been provided with tools and values, with the excuse of the budget or that high schools were just transit zones between university, where the capable would finish their education, and vocational training, where the others would learn a trade to avoid starving. There have also been, certainly, accommodating spirits, who have lived up to the cliché of the lazy and evasive civil servant, who only seeks to do the minimum – distribute photocopies – and run away for the weekend. But the majority are people passionately dedicated to knowledge and the transmission of knowledge, who enjoy explaining themselves and making knowledge what it truly is: an adventure. The rest of society, however, has been left with the image of the useless and condescending professor, who has two months of vacation, double pay, and who takes sick leave when they can, doesn't explain much to the kids, and deep down wouldn't want to be there. But what has worsened the profession has not been the teachers but the students; if they came with a real desire to work, learn and improve, the teachers would be the first to be amazed; if the students had a real desire to work and study, things could become unbearable for the entire system. What has declined and made everything even more complicated has been the failure of basic home education, which sends to institutions – the law requires it – children who have no desire to do anything other than look at a screen or lie around. If young people do not believe in the future, in knowledge, in the progressive improvement of themselves and society, in the fact that by knowing things they can have a good future and a good life, any educational reform, even of the conditions of teachers, is useless. But the world they think they know speaks to them of millionaire footballers and YouTubers, of irredeemable people who get rich with nonsense and without knowing anything. They are not surrounded by a reality where knowledge seems to have any importance or prestige, and herein lies the problem. Often, the same teacher they have in front of them is nothing more than a warning, not an example: as if the best that could happen to them from getting good grades was to become a secondary school teacher, with all that it implies in terms of frustrations and more or less economic miseries (now accentuated by strikes). Society, the world, does not give them the necessary information for them to end up understanding all the options and realities that exist in a vast and complex world like the one outside the classrooms. A world that despises teachers, that laughs at them, just like the national police officer who went viral for arbitrarily beating a sixty-eight-year-old Valencian teacher.

These are the reasons why the Ministry of Health has ordered the precautionary closure of the central kitchen of the Can Arabí restaurant with only nine days left to finish the school year. The decision has forced the redistribution, from one day to the next, of nearly 2,000 school menus from 33 centers among three different companies. In total, Can Arabí manages 45 school canteens, many of them catering. The inspection was carried out this Monday and, well into the night, technicians from the Ministry of Education contacted management teams and families to inform them of the situation and activate an emergency plan to maintain the canteen service.

https://en.arabalears.cat/opinion/the-immoral-wars-of-our-time_129_5762960.html

Be part of a generation that has grown up with the conviction that war was a defeat, a defeat for politics, for diplomacy, and above all, for humanity. Those of us who have been trained in the political culture of the late 20th and early 21st centuries have done so with the conviction that all war is an injustice, especially for the civilian population that suffers it, accepting, however, that there are international norms that, in situations of extreme gravity, can justify an armed intervention, approved and recognized by the international community. This was the moral and legal pact that emerged from the ashes of the Second World War. The world had known horror as never before, and that is why attempts were made to build mechanisms to prevent barbarism from once again becoming the ordinary way of relating between states. From this arose the United Nations Organization, international relations based on norms, and the idea that human rights constitute an upper limit to the political or economic interests of states.Undoubtedly, it was not a perfect system; there would be countless occasions when the UN acted conditioned by the influence of superpowers or was unable to enforce its resolutions. It is also true that numerous military interventions have been justified for humanitarian reasons, for justice, to protect threatened minorities, or democracy itself, but too often they have hidden real geostrategic objectives that had nothing to do with the speeches. However, even in these cases, a fundamental element was maintained: the need for military actions that went beyond the margins of diplomacy to have an appearance of legitimacy, within the legal and moral framework established by the international system. This is why "the Azores trio" saw it necessary to justify the invasion of Iraq by the existence of weapons of mass destruction that were never found. Even if it was a lie, it sought not to deviate from the legitimacy granted by the norms recognized by the states that make up the international community.Nowadays, even this minimum is alarmingly disappearing, because if before it was necessary to seek complex explanations for any military action, now everything seems valid. The big change is not the injustice of the wars that have been initiated, the profound change is that it is intended that the use of force no longer needs to be justified, or, in any case, the arguments that granted legitimacy seem secondary: they attack Venezuela in the name of democracy, but suddenly they admit that the important thing is oil and months later the transition to democracy remains in stand-by.Another case, Putin's invasion of Ukraine is a clear example of violation of international law, however, even Putin tried to build an alibi that would give him an appearance of legitimacy: the protection of Russian minorities or the security of Russia's borders against NATO expansion. There is no doubt that it is a questionable discourse and, in fact, incompatible with international legality, but even so, he maintained the need to justify the aggression with some type of legitimacy. The great danger right now is that after these arguments that have crossed the line of acceptable justifications, we find ourselves with other leaders who completely break with the previous paradigm, and this idea comes above all from the Trump administration. The current North American president represents this dangerous change in international relations like few others; he has sought to normalize politics based exclusively on immediate, economic, and national interest. He does not see the need to build a coherent narrative within the framework of international relations as we have understood them until now. This is a break with the norms and international relations built after 1945. With this new paradigm, wars cease to be considered an extreme evil justified only in exceptional circumstances to become simple (and destructive) tools of power. We cannot overlook the case of Gaza, which, like few others, reflects this crisis in international relations. Israel initially justified its military operations in the name of the fight against terrorism after the Hamas attacks, but this justification loses all meaning when it turns into the systematic destruction of an entire region, the expulsion of its inhabitants, the indiscriminate murder of civilians, attacks on basic infrastructure such as hospitals and schools, and humanitarian corridors. Attacks against international cooperation and solidarity organizations; actions, all of them, that can be considered war crimes, crimes against humanity, or genocide, and are so denounced at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. Beyond the legal debate, the result of this unpunished aggression by the Israeli government of Netanyahu in Gaza, and now also in Lebanon, demonstrates the erosion and progressive destruction of a system of international relations based on norms and on the idea that the main goal of the international system is the maintenance of world peace. Therefore, we affirm that the wars of our time are, more than ever, immoral, because they have turned people, as has not happened since 1945, into expendable pawns in the service of economic gain, into simple figures, if political objectives are achieved from the most absolute selfishness. It is immoral because human life ceases to have value and remains subordinate to the interests of the powerful. For decades, the world at least tried to maintain the fiction that there were limits that democratic states in particular should never cross. Today we are witnessing the destruction of these limits, of a system of relations based on norms, a destruction that contemplates a public opinion saturated with information and that feels powerless, if not pushed to justify the unjustifiable according to an extreme polarization that some promote. In this context it is very important that voices opposing it are heard, loud and clear. One of these voices is Pope Leo XIV, who has repeatedly denounced the trivialization of war and the glorification of force. To him should be added political leaders from different countries, such as the Spanish president, Pedro Sánchez, who represent the democratic and internationalist response to the rise of new authoritarianisms, main promoters of the new culture of force. Here lies an essential part of the issue we are analyzing today: authoritarian governments exalt force over law, in line with how they manage their internal policies (let's recall Trump's anti-immigration policies, ICE, and the brutality they employ). Today it is once again time to demand the 'no to war', or the 'yes to peace', to advocate for pacifism, to reject those who treat peace as naivety. It is not naivety, it is a necessity. Defending peace, international law, and human dignity is once again an act of resistance. Being a pacifist is once again revolutionary.

In the Islands, we have achieved a new administrative feat, a new magic trick: to be able to expand a marine reserve, we have agreed to reduce the protection of all of them. And I explain it. We are located in Freus, between Ibiza and Formentera, the first marine reserve declared in the Balearic Islands, in May 1999. Last year, the Government, after presenting its ambitious Marine Conservation Plan, announced the expansion of the protected area. And, to no one's surprise, recreational fishermen took up arms with their well-known tactics to pressure politicians: references to tradition, to "reserves are closed areas for professionals" and that very Sicilian-sounding threat to withdraw votes from the PP. By the way, tradition as an argument to curb environmental protection would deserve a whole article, but that will be another day.And what has been the Government's response? Now comes the sleight of hand, because the solution proposes to expand the reserve but to reduce, in return, the level of protection for both this area and Punta de la Creu, Tagomago and the western islets. If it is finally approved (the objection phase has just closed), recreational fishermen will be able to increase fishing quotas and, in addition, use techniques that until now are not permitted in most of the reserves. The director of the Marilles Foundation, biologist Aniol Esteban, summarized it as follows on IB3 radio's Nautilus: “We are talking about a decree that will increase fishing pressure in the marine reserves of Ibiza and Formentera”. Disrupted reserves.Global warming

Fishermen believe that the sea belongs to them and that, therefore, they have the right to exploit it infinitely, without taking into account that entire populations have already been exterminated. Without taking into account the added pressure of global warming (even sardine populations are dwindling, but you can be sure they will be fished until there are none left, because freedom is more important than biodiversity). Any progress in the defense of the marine environment continues to be subject to the veto right of the sectors that exploit its resources. A minority veto over a common good. We have assumed that fishermen – professional or recreational – have a kind of special authority over the sea, an automatic legitimacy to determine what can and cannot be done there. Why? I insist: WHY? Why should those who exploit the sea decide on its protection if we all depend on it?The problem is, in large part, a matter of language and structure, because the Balearic reserves are technically marine reserves of fishing interest and, of course, even if this allows for the improvement of populations, the objective is that, in the future, fishermen will have more marine life to exploit. They don't even call it life, they call it 'fishing resources', and until we stop thinking about the oceans and their inhabitants from the perspective of predation, we will not be able to save them. It's the same linguistic trap with which whales were protected just forty years ago. They weren't stopped from being killed just like that in view of the catastrophe their disappearance represented, but rather a moratorium was established, which means they are allowed to grow and multiply, and we'll see if they are ever hunted again. Resources, stock, and exploitation are loaded words with which humans sustain their self-proclaimed status as gods of the world – unsatisfied and irresponsible gods, as Yuval Noah Harari would say – to continue considering that animals and their habitats are there for their sole profit. A language in the service of an idea that leads us to disaster, that hides that our entire life depends on a healthy ocean, that without it there is nothing. It's time we understood that its health is ours. So I will go even further, and you can call me radical; if we are clear that the sea is overexploited, that there is neither the diversity nor the populations of twenty or thirty years ago – and I won't go any further – why is it assumed as normal to continue eating the ocean? Why do those who sustain overexploitation have more right than I do to decide on the future? The sea does not belong to those who exploit it. The sea is a common good on which we all depend, including those who do not fish and those who have even reached the –uncomfortable for many, but difficult to ignore– conclusion that in an overexploited ecosystem, the most coherent response is to stop eating it. Conservation should not start with the question of how we can continue fishing without reaching the point of no return, but rather what we are willing to give up – here and now – so that ecosystems continue to exist. And perhaps the marine protected areas we should have in the Islands should not be reserves of fishing interest, but let's see who dares to open this debate.

The news, at first glance, even seems hopeful. Finally, a residential solution could begin to open up for part of the resident population. And it is probably true that many of these developments will be necessary. It is also true that without formulas like limited-price housing, a significant portion of residents could no longer aspire today to access housing in the current market. But behind this promise there is a question that is hard to ignore: what will happen during these five years? And, above all: who will build these homes?

The first season of vehicle limitation application allowed for a reduction of approximately 32,000 in the number of vehicles that could circulate during the regulated period, according to data from the Pitiusan Council. The rule establishes a cap on non-resident vehicles and a specific quota for rental cars, with the aim of reducing saturation.the current collapse situation. It was the first time in history that MÉS per Mallorca had representation in the Lower House. That summer of 2023, the deputy began to see the fruits of the efforts the party had made for years to stop being unknown in the State's sovereignist movement. Informally, the Basque left has become one of the most important supporters of the eco-sovereignists, beyond the pacts with ERC in the Balearic Islands and the strategic alliance with Sumar.

The employers' associations CECEIB and PIMEM refused this Monday, for the third time, to sign the document necessary to formally constitute the negotiating committee, an essential step to begin talks for an agreement that has been demanded for years by unions and early childhood education workers. The deadlock keeps alive the strike called for next June 16, which worker representatives anticipate will have significant participation. The employers' refusal clashes with the proposals agreed upon in July 2025 during the resolution of the conflict of the outsourced early childhood education centers in Palma, when a salary improvement was agreed upon and the door was opened to the negotiation of a regional agreement.

https://en.arabalears.cat/opinion/far-away-from-the-cranes_129_5761526.html

In its fortunate and necessary return to activity, Terraferida has launched the campaign ‘Foravila fora grues’ (Out of town, no cranes), which proposes a response to the phenomenon of indiscriminate urbanization of rural land in Mallorca. You can read, incidentally, here at ARA Balears, an excellent opinion piece by Sebastià Portell on this issue: 'Many little houses make a little hell' it is titled, with apt irony. Portell mentions it, but it should be emphasized that in recent years (especially since the pandemic) we are no longer talking only about little houses for weekend getaways or stays, but about large chalets and luxury homes with swimming pools, lawn extensions, and even their own roundabout, all built on what were once cultivated fields or forest areas. Very often the money is German, or Swedish, or British, or Russian: curiously, those who say that Mallorca has too many people, these do not bother them at all and they only feel cramped in the presence of immigrants. They reject the poor because they say they are illegal; on the other hand, the rich who build houses – these indeed – illegal, they welcome them most enthusiastically. The wild multiplication of constructions in the outskirts ends up generating small – and not so small – illegal developments, with all the problems this generates. True damage to the environment, including loss of agricultural and forest land, loss of food sovereignty (we have to buy food from outside because we have destroyed the farmers and livestock breeders and we do not produce enough), more cars, pollution and saturation also in the outskirts, and destruction of the territory, with fatal consequences for many animal and plant species. Also social problems, such as the increase – even more – in the cost of housing and municipal services, which, on the other hand, are often insufficient. And the destruction of farming, a phenomenon that can only be described as self-destructive. And the increase in social inequalities, between wealthy owners who can afford to buy or have houses built wherever they please, and a large mass of the population who cannot even dream of affording to own or rent a home. And the degradation of municipalities, and of the island as a whole, to serve as mere backdrops for the fantasy home that a completely uprooted millionaire has decided to build for himself "in the Mediterranean", which for them is an image they have seen in films and decoration magazines. To avoid all this mess (which is already alarming, but not yet irreversible) Terraferida points out a realistic, pragmatic, non-anti-system solution that is in our hands. It does not depend on Madrid, nor even on the Balearic Government, but on the Consell de Mallorca. It is about removing from the Territorial Plan of Majorca (PTIM), the famous rule of two quarterades, or 14,000 m2, which are required to build a dwelling in a rural area, and which has given rise to all sorts of plays and gambits to achieve summing up square meters (it has even given rise to an endemic species of speculator, called ‘aplegacortons’). In a place as exotic as Menorca, this rule does not exist, and this has made it possible to preserve the countryside, and its uses, much better than has been done in Mallorca and Ibiza. It is time to also move towards a new type of urban planning, as is already being considered in European countries such as France: to build nothing in rural areas, but to concentrate on the construction and rehabilitation of buildings in urban areas. If you wish to join the campaign, you can sign the manifesto at terraferida.cat. And we are all called to a great (very great) demonstration with this same slogan, ‘Foravila fora grues’, on July 26th in Palma. It is necessary and urgent.

If, moreover, it's four decades of continued success and future projects, the celebration becomes even happier. This Sunday, Hipercentro celebrated the 40th anniversary of the opening of its first supermarket, in Manacor on June 7, 1986, when three partners: Pere Gonçal Aguiló, Bernat Font, and Pere Nicolau, mortgaged what they had to compete at a distance with the large retail spaces that were opening in Palma. Today, they already have between 1,000 and 1,200 employees (depending on the season) and keep about thirty of their own establishments open in the Balearic Islands, with a forthcoming opening in Sóller.

She soon developed a special ability to achieve what she wanted: “She knew perfectly how to ask for things from each person. She did it with innocence, but she almost always succeeded. She had great intuition for reading people.” Children and stories have been two constants throughout her life. When she was a girl, she would sit the little ones down and tell them stories. Later she studied teaching and worked for a few years as a Primary school teacher before dedicating herself fully to philology. The decision by the Department of Education—which sets the closing of ordinary grades before June 5 and keeps classes until the 19th—aimed to reorganize the calendar, advance retakes, and dedicate the following weeks to both supporting students with pending subjects and maintaining teaching activity with approved students. However, on the ground, the majority perception is different: absenteeism has soared and effective learning time has been lost.

Perhaps they are only prejudices, which is not understood after having seen in the grand house, in both and in many more, some operatic creation that was “amazing”. It is clear that the progenitors of the creature, Nao Albet and Marcel Borràs, have played the role - which is also a game that fits perfectly with this baby - of transgression and they announce it from the title. Els estunmen is nothing more than the pronunciation of the stuntmen, the specialists, the doubles of the protagonists, those who are there and pretend to be. The capos, Albet and Borràs, say it is an opera and they are surely right and have reasons to classify it within this genre, where contemporaneity always finds almost insurmountable barriers. The music is by Fernando Velázquez, who instead of transgressing creates a precise and fitting alloy of quite a few operatic eras, although if the story speaks, among many other things, of heroes, who better than Wagner as a great source of inspiration. For this, and for many other things, we are facing a guesamcunstverq, which is how the total work of art preached by the gentleman of Bayreuth is pronounced.

It went from 150,000 inhabitants to 300,000. The tourist boom, with its epicenter in l'Arenal, turned the Balearic capital into a kind of promised land not only for peninsulars, especially from Andalusia and Murcia, but also for families from the Part Forana, who were fleeing the harshness of the countryside. One of the suburban neighborhoods that was suddenly colonized was Son Gotleu, located in the Llevant district, between Aragó street and La Soledat. Its transformation can be traced in the exhibition Son Gotleu, beyond the headline. The origins of a welcoming neighborhood (1960-1980). Until the second week of June it will be at the neighborhood's health center and then it will move to the Mater center. It is a project by Palma XXI and Arquitectives, coordinated by the historian from Pollença Leyla Dworkin with the support of Caixa Colonya and Fundació Iniciatives del Mediterrani.

We are fully aware that we use them loaded with social values and connotations that we have learned throughout our experience as members of a linguistic community. For many of us, the word ‘estaca’ no longer solely designates a stake driven into the ground and has become, with Lluís Llach's song, a symbol of the collective will to overcome oppression. The social and emotional meaning of the word ‘estaca’ therefore goes far beyond its strictly literal meaning.

It is said that the first inhabitants collected wild cereals and then used the grain by crushing it between two stones to make porridge. It is believed that one day, someone forgot some of this porridge near the fire, or perhaps poured it intentionally onto a hot stone. The result was a dry, flat, and crispy paste, the first unleavened bread (without yeast) in history. Bread as we know it today, fluffy, with crumb and volume, was born in ancient Egypt. Chance again played in its favor when some forgotten shepherd captured some of the yeast fungi that live suspended in the air. That dough swelled and when they found it, they decided to bake it. The result was truly a miracle: a soft, tasty, and much easier to digest bread.

He draws maps for us to travel to different “literary countries”, but he does not do so as a literary critic, but as a storyteller. It is the wonder of literature, books allow us to retell their stories again and again, sometimes faithfully, sometimes with betrayal. In fact, not ceasing to talk about books, including those written a long time ago, is what makes them continue to address us. Alba Rico puts six pairs of authors in dialogue, creating a kind of genealogy of his sensitivity as a reader. Kafka and Potter, Melville and Hergé, Dickens and Cervantes, Dostoevsky and Hašek, Shelley and McCullers, Austen and Proust. We have a book of books in our hands.

The norm must go through Parliament to come into force and cannot be implemented this summer. The question here is whether the president of the insular institution, Llorenç Galmés, will have the law ready for next season, because the legislature could end without the popular leader fulfilling one of his most important commitments. Be that as it may, Mallorca continues to be stuck, as the Council acknowledges in the preamble to the law, where it points out that “the number of tourists Mallorca receives each year has not stopped growing” and that the island “suffers notable and growing pressure on its road structures”.

The large multinationals in the sector, grouped under Baleval, have historically been the main beneficiaries of a market that has grown steadily in recent decades. According to data from this employers' association, a significant portion of the more than 100,000 rental cars circulating in Mallorca are theirs, a large part of them registered outside the Archipelago. Faced with the new regulation, these companies have expressed their rejection of the planned limits. On the other hand, small and medium-sized car rentals of island origin, grouped under AEVAB, have defended the need to set a ceiling to contain saturation and regulate the market.

Ruiz joined the flotilla in the midst of a war that, since October 2023, has caused the death of more than 72,000 Palestinians and displaced most of the population of the Strip. While Benjamin Netanyahu's government has announced its intention to expand military control over the enclave to 70%, the Majorcan activist asserts that she could not stand aside from the conflict. It was the month of September 1867 and the ‘prince, scientist and traveller’, as the scholar Helga Schwendinger defined him, had opted for the sea route to visit this town in the Tramuntana mountain range. He disembarked at the coast of Son Ferrandell, at the coastal spot known as Hort de la Cova d’en Claret. A place that the people of Valldemossa remember, above all, because three centuries earlier, on October 1, 1552, when precisely the Clarets owned what was later known as Son Ferrandell, which at that time also included Son Olesa and Vistamar, a fleet of 400 pirates disembarked there with the intention of sacking the town and capturing people to sell them as slaves or obtain a ransom.

https://en.arabalears.cat/misc/rare-earths_129_5759722.html

After eleven years of editorial silence – which in reality does not mean the poet has been quiet, as he himself makes clear in the magnificent prologue that serves as an introduction, since in reality all this time he has been brewing the event, waiting for the best moment and preparing for the explosion just like a good hunter – Emili Sánchez-Rubio publishes a new poetry book: Terres rares in the delightful collection La Fosca by Lleonard Muntaner, Editor. I want to say it right away: it is a colossal, visionary, prodigious work that confirms the author as one of the best of his generation. Therefore, we are faced with a return to the very top, an authentic renaissance, a resurgence that deserves all our attention and passion. Reading these pages illuminated by extreme wisdom, I have re-membered, returned things to the heart, according to the centennial Blai Bonet, how much the lyrical proposal of this prophet born in Ciutat de Mal in 1983 has always made me hallucinate, who has been a Necromancer and who now returns as an Alchemist or, even better, a Presocratic of the Future, an Oracular Scientist.Rare earths, as the title itself indicates, takes its name and atomic number from these elements that are very difficult to obtain and so poetic to, from their unfolding like a catalog of untamed matters in the style of Bartomeu Fiol, build the structure of the volume, which advances as we delve into the strange and precious fusion of entity and soul, of corpora and spirit. Recognizing chaos (in fact, the pages of this book are full of brutal oxymorons and paradoxes and contradictions) to unravel the cosmos, Emili Sánchez-Rubio shines in a verbal and philosophical way like Miquel Bauçà; as Andreu Vidal investigates the darkness to reach the conclusion that “in the Obscure, / all things are white”; he builds a foundational theory of Love following the example of the admired Robert Graves and secretes impossible images and real scenes, because in fact every poem is a legacy or a statement of incontinence, like the best disciple of the master and friend Emilio Arnao and achieves mystical genius that touches upon daily ardor and the epiphytic discovery of pure revelation: “The speed of light / is what it is / because it flees from Time.”Longer poems are combined with more synthetic poems in perfect balance, a brilliant cosmic balance that confirms the gifts of a brilliant and eloquent poet. The fascinating result, a pure fireball in the purest style of Bartomeu Rosselló-Pòrcel of our era, is an admirable cosmogonic theory that returns poetry to its place as an exceptional vehicle of visionary knowledge and seals it through a messianic expression. ‘Terres rares’, by Emili Sánchez-Rubio, is, and I say this without doubts or regrets, a sublime book in every sense.

Unity and courage. For a left-wing front in Palma

https://en.arabalears.cat/opinion/unity-and-courage-for-left-wing-front-in-palma_129_5759711.html

Often taking a step is not a simple task. However, doing so is necessary if we want to move forward collectively. Today, in Palma, in the Balearic Islands, and throughout the Catalan Countries and the state, we are living through difficult times. The threat of the far-right and an increasingly right-wing PP is absolute. That is why it is a moment for unity and courage, the terms that my tandem partner Xisca Mir and I have wanted to adopt as a slogan for the MÉS per Palma primaries. Unity and courage to win.We need the sovereignist left, represented by MÉS per Palma – the result of decades of work by different and valuable councilors: from Sebastià Serra, Nanda Ramon, Joan Perelló, Lila Thomàs, Tomeu Carrió, Maria Costa and Jordi López to Antoni Noguera, Marisol Fernández, Antoni Verger and Neus Truyol – to articulate an anti-fascist front that brings together all the Palma citizens who do not want our lives to be in the hands of characters like Fulgencio Coll and Jaime Martínez. I feel like an heir to the left-wing and green Mallorcanism people I have mentioned, yes, but also to wonderful anti-capitalist councilors who were part of Som Palma and Podem, such as Aligi Molina and Aurora Jhardi. I am presenting myself to lead a broad and generous candidacy where, precisely, Esquerra Unida, Sumar, Podem, the Socialist Movement and the Independent Left are also present in the form they deem appropriate. Because they are, fundamentally, our comrades. I want this list to be a starting point, a catalyst, embracing independent citizens who fight for housing, for the defense of small businesses, for the neighborhood movement – which I know well in the Santa Pagesa neighborhood –, for feminism, for the Catalan language movement, for culture, for unionism, and against social exclusion. There is room for everyone.Only with a brave, plural and united tool that generates enthusiasm can we focus the debate. And the debate is very clear: we must tackle people's real problems and their material solutions. If what affects us has collective causes, the response must undoubtedly be collective and in no case individual. The people of Palma do not make ends meet, they have nowhere to live, they suffer from precarious jobs, they see how the city and its corners no longer belong to them and they live with pain the linguistic, cultural, heritage and commercial depersonalization of the capital of Mallorca. We must fight with conviction the terrible effects that unbridled tourism and the business of a few friends of the right leave in our lives. The current critical situation of the city and the times we live in demand forcefulness and radicality in the etymological sense of the term that I know as a Latin professor. People need proposals and a hard, cheerful and uninhibited political action. To break free from the frameworks that the extreme right wants to impose on us: those who harm the people of Palma are not someone with an Arab, Asian or sub-Saharan name, poor and with dark skin, but vulture funds, international extractive capitalism and the worst rent-seeking tied to the PP and Vox, who have no empathy or sensitivity for families, youth and workers. There is hope. I see municipalist role models across Europe, in the south and the north, that inspire me: Die Linke, in German cities; Adelante Andalucía; La France Insoumise; Plaid Cymru, in Wales; Sinn Féin, in Ireland; and the Green Party, in England. Brave left-wing movements, rooted in the territory and that face 21st-century urban problems head-on. The historical moment demands courage and decisiveness from us.I am 45 years old. I have been active in social movements my whole life. I know the street. I know Palma and our neighborhoods. I will lead the MÉS per Palma candidacy, aware that it will be the first time an independent person does so in the long history of the parties that form this space. Someone who is not an organic part of MÉS nor of the traditions that compose it (PSM, Iniciativa Verds, and ERC). It is an opportunity to grow, to face the new times ahead with freshness, and to do so, in the words of Manuel Monereo, by confronting the great issue that will shape the urban future of our days: “What is at stake is the soul of the working class.” And if one thing is clear to me, it is that in May 2027, the soul of the popular classes of the city that saw the biographies of the neighborhood activist Rosa Bueno and the poet Josep Maria Llompart develop cannot, in any way, be conquered by the obscurantism of PP and Vox.

His start was discreet and his demeanor, prudent, very different from the spontaneous and somewhat excessive character of Francis, led many to believe he would be a transitional pontiff who would diminish the political and media weight of the Church. However, after a few months, this perception began to change and, in part, it was thanks to a compatriot of his: Donald Trump.
