The Government will "evaluate" the affordable housing draft law that the European Commission presented this week. The first vice president, Antoni Costa, has assured that they will even consider limiting the purchase of second homes if Brussels endorses it. He said this after the European Union (EU) opted to promote this limitation in areas affected by the housing crisis. The vice president also referred to the possibility of prohibiting the purchase of homes by non-residents, although the Commission's initiative does not cover this issue. "We are willing to analyze it if the door is opened," he explained.

The Medical Strike Committee announced this Friday an indefinite nationwide strike starting on October 28th to protest against the Statute Framework bill and demand specific regulations for doctors and medical professionals. All parties except Vox have voted in favor of this initiative to protect the underwater mountains located between Mallorca and the Pitiüses, "one of the most unique and valuable marine spaces in the western Mediterranean," according to the text of the PNL. The educational community views with concern the growing weight of charter schools in the Government's educational policy. The family federation FAPA Mallorca makes the most forceful criticism of it. It is true that the trend has not been positive for years, but rather the opposite; however, there is one issue that is especially alarming: reading comprehension. For years, the education system has been balancing constant legislative changes, pedagogical experiments, budget cuts, and forced digitalization without achieving the desired results. All this paraphernalia has eclipsed a fundamental issue: school no longer guarantees that students know how to read and write. Degrees are given away and students are passed to the next grade to mask a chilling reality, which is that every year the system churns out students with an ESO degree in hand that is good for nothing more than for the government of the day to exempt itself from the responsibility of having a high school failure rate. Students with an ESO degree incapable of maintaining a basic level conversation in Catalan; students with an ESO degree who do not know how to locate continents on a map; students with an ESO degree who do not know what a percentage is; students with an ESO degree who cannot link two sentences in English and now, with all of you, the icing on the cake: students with an ESO –or high school– degree who do not understand what they read. Unfortunately, it seems that the system is no longer designed to educate children, but to look after them while their parents are at work.While the law asks teachers to train critical citizens, to evaluate competencies such as ‘learning to learn’ and to prepare students for the world of the future –a delirious abstraction– the reality is that the educational system is not a priority for political leaders. What future awaits all those who are not capable of understanding a short text? How is someone supposed to learn for themselves if they do not have the minimum literacy skills developed? Who will be the great beneficiary if, tomorrow, a worker is not even capable of understanding what their employment contract says? Who does it benefit that the public education system is in decline?It does not seem that the LOMLOE has helped much to improve the situation or to facilitate the work of teachers – whoever has read any of the evaluation criteria stipulated therein will know what we are talking about. Likewise, the implementation of some pedagogical approaches has not achieved, for the moment, much more than burdening teachers with bureaucracy. As if all this were not enough, artificial intelligence will arrive in schools to definitively suppress natural intelligence and, incidentally, will allow some to do business with new 'training' for teachers.It is true that the current educational model is much more ambitious than that of past times: it attempts to reach everyone, respect the family and personal situations of each child, adapt to the rhythm and needs of each student… But to achieve all this, the ground must be prepared: increase investment in education, dignify the role of teachers, implement realistic laws, and, ultimately, imbue the public education system with an authority and prestige that, as of now, it has lost. Lamentations and the patches with which public school has been mended over the last decades are of little use. An ESO degree that does not guarantee that the student has basic knowledge has the same value as a thirty-euro bill. Let's not fool ourselves; we will not get out of this situation by inertia or without making structural changes. It is necessary –more than ever, perhaps– that all parties involved –government, opposition, teachers, families, citizens committed to a better future (excuse the abstraction)– fight for the public education system to be a guarantee of knowledge and academic quality.

The Balearic Islands are facing an increase in requests for help related to emotional suffering and suicidal behavior. The Telephone of Hope (Telephone of Hope) has handled 2,503 calls during the first semester of 2026, almost 50% more than in the same period last year, while the SAMU 061 has received 2,138 alerts for suicidal ideation or attempts between January and August, with 35 deaths recorded. The figures were released by the Government on the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day, which is commemorated this Thursday, in a context in which administrations and entities insist on the need to detect and address suffering before it leads to suicidal behavior.

The Department of Education will open proceedings against privately managed (charter) nursery schools that have breached regulations. This was announced this Wednesday by the Minister, Antoni Vera, during the Government control session in Parliament, in response to questions from the opposition regarding the incidents reported by the workers of the 0-3 Network during the summer months. Vera differentiated between the situations detected during the summer and those that have occurred with the start of the school year. Walter Benjamin taught us that works of art, when seen reproduced in a book or on a postcard, lose their ‘aura’. It is obvious that a reproduction can be very good, even absolutely faithful to the original colors and sizes –in the case of a painting–, or that the observer can get a very thorough idea of what, for example, the Mona Lisa is. But a reproduction of La Gioconda is not the original, because the original has the aforementioned 'aura', which comes to it from that theorized 'distance': the original has traversed time, and often also space, and appears before us in a place, without losing either its mystery or its authority. The concept of aura, then, is back in fashion now, it seems due to young people who meet to compete in fascinating and a bit grotesque 'aura battles', which first must be cultivated, or 'farmed', as they say, making an English verb their own, mainly learned from video games. Aura is cultivated because through battles or clashes between different young people, it is achieved that the social perception that others have of one's own charisma, style, presence, confidence, or the ability to show oneself as 'cool'. But young people are sharper than it seems; we must want to go beyond the blind and blunt criticism that many make on social media to end up understanding 'the game', because all of this is too revealing. Often one just needs to take a little care. Because the more aura you want to have, the less you have, or the more it seems you want to act cool and charismatic, the more your true colors show and you lose the game completely. I would not say that within the literary field things work in a very different way: there are those who have aura and those who do not, and no one seems more grotesque or dispensable than those who want above all to cultivate aura, that is, to start pulling strings or pushing buttons to appear to have greatness or insight or grace, when precisely if one had all that, one would not have to do anything, because we would already be there. The game or irony is competing for something for which one should not want the victory, because just by wanting it –or by exhibiting that desire– they can no longer give it to you. The winner must be the one who seems to want it the least, and at the same time the one who does things that, for one reason or another, end up fascinating the public the most. Now the aura is quantified, as Benjamin also taught us to do, who knew how to see which things were or were not 'authentic'. And this is where art returns, because all of it is pure simulation: one must make it look like one is doing nothing, no effort, or that the way of dressing, walking, dancing, or looking are not the result of hours of trial and error. If for Benjamin the aura was destroyed because of technology, these young people have learned that technology is the only way in which they can cultivate it. Art was unrepeatable, but the aura that is now sought to be had ends up being nothing more than a reputation for singularity produced through repetition. Art says nothing to them, surely, but what they do is nothing more than seek, in a more or less showy way, the artistic experience.

In Frankfurt, people earn more than double what they do in Palma, but buying a square meter in the center only costs 24% more. In Amsterdam, salaries are 128% higher than in the Balearic capital, while housing is 61% more expensive. And in Brussels, the difference is even more striking: salaries exceed those of Palma by 59%, even though the square meter in the center is 27% cheaper.

The Balearic Islands obtain worse results than Spain, the European Union average, and the OECD in the three competencies evaluated by the PISA report corresponding to the tests carried out in 2025. The situation is especially worrying in Reading Comprehension, where the Islands fall to 441 points, 31 less than in 2022, but the decline is also notable in Mathematics, with 449 points (-22), and in Science, with 471 (-9). In tests where a difference of 20 points is approximately equivalent to one academic year, the magnitude of the drop is difficult to ignore. More than half of the students do not reach, for example, level 2 of scientific competence, the threshold that PISA considers basic. The data, in themselves, do not explain why this is happening. But they do force us to look at what has changed inside the classrooms and also outside of them.

Over the weekend, "highest-level" calls were made to defend the bill for the airport co-management of the Islands. Two motorcyclists have been seriously injured after falling 20 meters while driving through the area of Cala Tuent, in the municipality of Escorca (Mallorca). The city councils of Campos and Ses Salines have alerted the population that the water from their public networks is not suitable for human consumption due to the high levels of sodium it contains. Educational unions react with very different diagnoses to the poor results of the Balearic Islands in the 2025 PISA report. While SIAU considers that the data once again demonstrates the "failure of the educational model that is being imposed in the Balearic Islands" and demands a change of course, STEI rejects that the results should become a tool to question teachers and focuses on the lack of resources and investment. The island Minister of Tourism, Guillem Ginard, accuses the PSOE of defending containment in Mallorca and growth in Madrid. The National Police arrested a third man this Monday allegedly related to the arson of a home in Manacor and death threats against its residents, in a case that investigators link to a possible revenge for an economic debt.

The general coordinator of MÉS per Mallorca, Lluís Apesteguia, launched the party's proposal on immigration this Tuesday. It involves demanding the application of article 32.18 of the Statute of Autonomy, which provides for the transfer of executive and management powers over immigration to the Government. With this position, the eco-sovereigntists are defining their profile on an issue that has already become one of the main public concerns according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE). "It is an obligation not to leave the debate on migration policies in the hands of the right and the far-right," he explained in a press conference.
