An Ibiza mansion has been accused of wasting water from three pools during a drought alert.
Friends of the Earth regrets that excessive water consumption is a common practice among luxury villa owners.
PalmThe environmental organization Amics de la Terra has publicly denounced the Sant Joan government and city council for allowing the owner of a luxury villa in Sant Llorenç to empty and refill the three swimming pools at his home, amid a drought alert.
In a statement, the organization lamented that "this is not an isolated case" because water waste is a common practice in luxury homes. Neighbors close to the mansion have informed the organization of this incident. They pointed out that one of the pools, "of dubious legality," is "enormous" in size and, given the current situation, should be "totally unacceptable" and the consumption of water resources, which are already at their limit, should be controlled.
They added that the mansion is in the ANEI zone and is classified as a zone of high aquifer vulnerability, which, they reiterated, adds to the seriousness of the situation. "We believe that these behaviors and channels should have clear measures in place to prevent the emptying of swimming pools and protect our water resources," they insisted. Therefore, they have urged the Government and the City Council to adopt measures to preserve water reserves and penalize unnecessary and wasteful uses of water.
Friends of the Earth has warned that it is unknown how long the current situation will last, so they should be taking all possible precautions and measures. In fact, it is "inconceivable" that the construction of new homes, swimming pools, and wells would be allowed, while further tourism growth would be pursued. Thus, Friends of the Earth has called for urgent measures to close the water cycle and prevent its waste.
