An illegal well that extracted 40,000 liters of water daily has been sealed at an agrotourism resort in Alaior.

PalmThe Civil Guard, as part of Operation Zahori, sealed off an illegal well located at a rural tourism site in the municipality of Alaior, which was discovered during a routine inspection. The operation was carried out last weekend in collaboration with inspectors from the Government's Department of Water Resources.

Although the rural tourism site already had a legalized well intended for human consumption, Civil Guard officers from the Seprona (National Water Service) detected the existence of a second well, neither declared nor registered in the Water Resources Registry, which was also being used illegally.

According to the data obtained, the illegal well has a depth of 82 meters, and according to the information provided by the owner, it extracted 40,000 liters of water daily, which was supposedly used to water gardens and fill the swimming pools, two activities that involve high and constant consumption, especially during the tourist season.

During the inspection, samples of the extracted water were taken in order to analyze a possible impact on the aquifer.

Tests

The tests will determine whether the continued use of the illegal well has had any impact on groundwater quality or water availability in the area.

This operation remains open with the aim of locating and investigating other possible cases of illegal water extraction in tourist establishments and agricultural farms on the island.

The Civil Guard has reminded that the exploitation of wells without the corresponding authorization constitutes a serious infraction and can lead to significant administrative sanctions, in addition to affecting the environmental balance, especially on islands like Menorca, where water resources are limited and vulnerable to overexploitation.
