PalmThe Consell de Mallorca has been the subject of criticism this Thursday after a stand dedicated to the exaltation of the Francoist military man Millán-Astray was set up within the framework of the Feria de la Gent Gran.

According to MÉS per Mallorca's denunciation this Saturday, the presence of this space at the fair constitutes an “intolerable democratic shame” and an example of the normalization of symbolism linked to Francoism in a public space.

The criticisms are directed at the insular government of the PP, which they accuse of “whitewashing” these types of discourses and allowing their presence at an institutional event aimed at the elderly. In this regard, the alleged complicity with the far-right has also been reproached.

The complainants demand immediate political accountability for allowing the installation of the stall, which they consider contrary to democratic values and historical memory regulations. For now, the Consell de Mallorca has not made any detailed assessment public regarding the events or the authorization criteria for the stands present at the fair.

In a statement, the party assured that the fact that Vox representatives announced the measure evidences the “absolute submission” of the Popular Party. According to MÉS, this situation not only implies an influence on public policies, but also on the “report, the tempos, and the institutional communication” of the island institution.

In this regard, they also criticized that the PP has assumed the discourse of “national priority” promoted by Vox, an idea they consider “improper for an institution that must guarantee social cohesion and equal opportunities”.

“The PP has stopped governing to become a mere management of Vox's impositions. Today it is no longer possible to distinguish between a decision by the PP and a demand from Vox”, stated councilor Joan Llodrà. Llodrà added that Vox “has taken the lead in political activity and in controlling the institutional narrative” in front of a PP “disposed to accept everything to keep the chair”.
