Eleven people rescued from a drifting boat in southeastern Menorca
Four of the occupants were in serious condition and were taken to the Mateu Orfila Hospital.
PalmMaritime Rescue rescued 11 migrants with symptoms of dehydration this Friday, four of them in serious condition, who were adrift on a boat 35 miles southeast of Menorca.
According to Efe, the boat's occupants were treated by medical services at the port of Mahon, and the four, in serious condition, were admitted to the Mateu Orfila Hospital.
The boat was spotted by the crew of a French sailboat, who notified their country's Maritime Rescue Department, which in turn alerted the Spanish National Maritime Rescue Center, which launched the rescue operation at 7:40 p.m. for the migrants, all of whom were men.
Rescue in Cabrera
On Friday, another 29 people were rescued, arriving around 6 p.m. in Cabrera, in southern Mallorca. They included 22 men, six women, and one minor. The boat they were on sank just as they reached the ground. All of them showed signs of dehydration and exhaustion.
This group had managed to reach the coast in a steep, difficult-to-access area, so the Guardia Civil's Mountain and Underwater Activities groups had to intervene in the operation.
Including these last two boats, 258 vessels have arrived illegally on the Balearic coast since the beginning of the year, with 4,859 people, according to an Efe tally based on data from the Spanish government delegation in the Balearic Islands.
