PalmaThe professor of Geography at the University of the Balearic Islands, Nofre Rullan, turned the opening speech of the Sant Pere festivities into a journey through the recent history of the municipality, from its industrial past to its current globalized reality. With the title "Esporles: close to Palma and between Mallorca and the world", the geographer analyzes how the town has gone from textile factories to the model of a commuter town, then to a metropolitan municipality and, finally, to an Esporles marked by mobility, residential tourism, and real estate pressure.

Throughout his speech, Rullan combines personal memories, data, and historical references to explain a transformation that he relates to the major economic and political changes of the 20th and early 21st centuries. The speech describes the arrival of urban developments, population growth, gentrification, the internationalization of the municipality, and the progressive disappearance of traditional elements of commerce and social life, while also claiming Esporles' ability to adapt without completely losing its identity.

The discourse ends with an invitation to reflection. "Industrial Esporles, commuter town Esporles, metropolitan Esporles, global Esporles... and what comes next? The artificially intelligent Esporles?, Esporles AI. I don't know, I have no idea, but the best thing we can do is think about it and reflect, it is the only tool we have at our disposal so that the changes do not catch us unprepared," states Rullan in the final part of an opening speech that can be consulted in full in the attached document.
