PalmaSix out of ten Balearic residents would change autonomous community if they could choose where to live. This is one of the conclusions of the study Residential preferences of Spaniards, prepared by Grup Mutua Propietarios, which points to Asturias as the preferred destination for Balearic residents to start a new chapter.

According to the survey, 64% of Balearic residents would be willing to move to another autonomous community, while only 36% say they would stay in the Islands, a percentage much lower than in territories such as Galicia (53%), Andalusia and the Canary Islands (46%), Asturias (45%), and the Valencian Community (44%).

Regarding preferences, Asturias is the community that sparks the most interest among Balearic residents, with 16% of the responses. Behind it is Andalusia (12%) and, at a greater distance, the Valencian Community and Galicia (7%).

The study also analyzes the possibility of moving abroad. Although Spain continues to be the preferred option for 51% of Balearic residents, 28% would choose a European country if they had to start a new life outside the State. South America (3%), North America (2%), Asia (2%), and Africa (1%) appear much further down.

Living in Europe

Generational differences are significant. 41% of young people between 18 and 24 years old would consider living in another country, mainly within Europe. In contrast, three out of four people over 65 prefer to continue living in Spain. Imagining a change is much more common than making it a reality. Only 26% of Balearic residents consider it likely to move in the coming years. The percentage rises to 42% among young people and reaches 55% among people who rent.

Among the main reasons for considering a change of residence are the desire to find a better location (32%), whether for work, services, or quality of life, followed by the desire to have a larger home (28%). Economic reasons account for 15% of responses.

According to the multichannel and client director of Grup Mutua Propietarios, Laura Mulà, the decision about where to live is increasingly conditioned by the desired lifestyle. Factors such as climate, natural environment, proximity to family, job opportunities, and quality of life ultimately determine residential preferences.
