July 2026 becomes the hottest month ever recorded in the Balearic Islands
The Aemet certifies a historic record with an average temperature of 28 degrees, two heatwaves in Mallorca and a month 66% drier than usual
PalmaThe month of July 2026 has been the warmest in the Balearic Islands since records began, with an average temperature of 28 degrees, 2.9 degrees above the climatic average. This is certified by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), which points out that it is the hottest July in the historical series started in 1961.
The meteorological agency highlights that the month has been extremely hot in all the Islands, with an average temperature of 28.2 degrees in Mallorca and Formentera, 28 degrees in Menorca, and 27.9 degrees in Ibiza, all with anomalies far above usual values. Furthermore, numerous meteorological stations in the Archipelago have broken monthly records, some in data series dating back to the 1940s and 1950s.
The extreme heat occurred in two heatwaves in Mallorca, between the 5th and 12th and between the 18th and 23rd of July, and a third in Ibiza, between the 6th and 9th. During these episodes, thermometers exceeded 40 degrees in various parts of the Islands.
The highest temperature of the month was recorded in Pollença, with 41.1 degrees. In Ibiza, Sant Joan de Labritja, and Sant Antoni de Portmany, temperatures reached 40.2 degrees, while in Menorca the maximum was 37.7 degrees in La Mola and in Formentera, 36.7 degrees.
Nighttime temperatures were also exceptionally high. The highest minimum reached 28 degrees in Sóller and in the city of Ibiza, and Aemet highlights new minimum temperature records in Palma-Portopí, Capdepera, and Ibiza airport.
A whole month with a temperature of 30 degrees or more
The report notes a very significant increase in hot days. In numerous stations in Mallorca, Ibiza, and Formentera, the 31 days of July have registered a maximum temperature equal to or higher than 30 degrees, when this number is usually much lower.
In Palma-Portopí, for example, all 31 days have been hot, when the average is 14. The 31 days have also been reached in Llucmajor, Santanyí, Campos, and Manacor, while all automatic stations in Ibiza and Formentera have registered the same behavior.
Extreme heat days, with maximums of 36 degrees or more, have also skyrocketed. Binissalem has accumulated 21 very warm days, when the normal is 6, and Llucmajor, Porreres, and Sineu, 20. In Ibiza, Sant Joan de Labritja has gone from 2 usual days to 14.
Record of tropical and torrid nights
The high temperature has also been maintained during the night. Several observatories have completed the entire month with 31 tropical nights, meaning minimum temperatures that have not dropped below 20 degrees.
Even more noteworthy are the torrid nights, with minimums above 25 degrees. Capdepera has registered 26, a record since 1989, while Banyalbufar, 18; Palma-Portopí, 14, and Sóller, 13, all well above normal values.
A very dry July
The heat has been accompanied by a lack of rainfall. During the month, only 1.9 liters per square meter have fallen on average, 66% less than usual in July.
In Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera, it has practically not rained. In Mallorca, precipitation has also been scarce, although in some parts of the north and interior, quantities above the average have been recorded, such as sa Pobla, with 13.6 liters per square meter, and Cabrera, with 14.2 liters.
Regarding the wind, Aemet considers that the month's behavior has been, in general, normal. The most intense gust was recorded at Menorca airport, with 89 kilometers per hour on July 2.
