Lloret will make those who recycle less pay more with the new red garbage bag
The municipality wants to improve selective collection and reduce waste with a system that rewards those who recycle, coinciding with the launch of the new green point
LloretLloret de Vistalegre begins a new era in its environmental management. With the aim of improving selective collection figures and complying with European regulations, the Council has announced the implementation of the red bag for the residual fraction.
This measure follows the path of other municipalities in Pla de Mallorca such as Porreres, Maria de la Salut, Sencelles, or Algaida, which have managed to drastically reduce waste ending up in the incinerator through pay-as-you-throw.
This measure, as explained by the mayor of Lloret de Vistalegre, Sebastià Amengual, will be implemented coinciding with the reopening and completion of the works on the new dehesa or Green Point. Amengual assures that "given the experience of the other municipalities in the Pla and seeing what residents put out on rejection day, the implementation of the red bag is an effective way to make those who recycle less pay more." "It is a way to raise people's awareness. Also, and especially, people from outside the town who have become accustomed to going to the green point and throwing away waste without recycling," says the mayor, who concludes by saying that "it will be the way to get serious and enforce the ordinance, which is why the new dehesa and the cameras will help us carry out this task for the benefit of all."
So that no resident is left with doubts about how the new system works (where and how to purchase the bags, schedules, and frequencies), several informative sessions have been organized at Es Centre (Plaza Jaume I).
The City Council has divided the meetings by streets to avoid crowds and offer more personalized attention:

According to the data, Lloret has been working to adapt its tax ordinance to the new Waste Law. The red bag system is a key tool for applying the principle of "he who pollutes less, pays less".
Currently, the increase in treatment costs in Son Reus has forced many town councils in the region to raise garbage fees. However, in Lloret, the implementation of this system allows the fee to be separated into a fixed part (service maintenance) and a variable part (the cost of the red bag). In this way, those citizens who correctly separate organic waste, paper, glass, and packaging (which are collected without having to pay for a bag) will see their total annual cost reduced by having to buy fewer residual bags.
This initiative is part of the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, to which Lloret is adhered, reaffirming its commitment to sustainability and the reduction of CO₂ emissions derived from waste management.
