Lourdes Sampol, painter and key figure of the Chopin Festival of Valldemossa, dies

PalmaLourdes Sampol Noguera, a painter and cultural activist strongly linked to Valldemossa, has passed away, as communicated by the Festival Chopin de Valldemossa Association. Sampol was part of the founding group of the Chopin Festival since 1981 and for decades led the annual exhibitions of contemporary artists linked to the event.
Born in Valldemossa in 1950, Sampol maintained a close connection with the cultural life of the municipality. Her artistic career also includes pictorial work and engravings. Her figure is also linked to the Mallorcan cultural movement of the last decades of Francoism.
Sampol's death occurs while a new edition of the Festival Chopin de Valldemossa is being celebrated, which this August once again brings together musicians and cultural activities at the Cartoixa. The Festivals Chopin Association has expressed its condolences and highlighted the memory of one of the driving forces behind the event.
"Since 1981, she was part of the founding group of the Chopin Festival and directed the annual exhibitions of contemporary artists. We will always remember her," they expressed.
