A Majorcan DJ alerts artists after having to change her name: "Register your artistic name"

PalmaA Majorcan DJ, Marga VM, has been forced to change her stage name after two years of working under the same identity. The disc jockey, who had been performing as Eclectica since 2024, received a formal request from a brand to stop using this name, which has been used by the brand in question since 2022, with a warning of potential legal consequences.

The request invokes Law 17/2001, of December 7, on Trademarks, which regulates the protection of distinctive signs and the rights of trademark holders. The regulation establishes that the registration of a trademark confers upon its holder an exclusive right over it and allows, in certain circumstances, to prevent third parties from using identical or similar signs in economic trade.

Faced with this situation, the DJ has decided to leave behind the name under which she had developed her activity during the last two years and start a new professional phase with a different artistic identity. The Majorcan has taken advantage of the case to call on her colleagues to register their stage names and avoid finding themselves in a similar situation in the future. Her experience, she believes, highlights that choosing a name to perform is not enough if it is not also legally protected.

Trademark regulations specifically contemplate the possibility that certain names, signs, or denominations remain protected in the commercial sphere. In the case of a registered trademark, the holder can go so far as to prohibit its use by third parties in economic activities when the conditions provided by law are met. Despite the change, the disc jockey wanted to make it clear that her activity does not change. "This does not end here, only the name changes," she claimed. And she summarizes it with a message that points directly to her new phase: "Marga VM is back".
