PalmThe Maritime Service of the Civil Guard has rescued a man who went missing in the Bay of Palma while practicing wing foiling, a water sport similar to surfing. Last Thursday, a group of people set out from Portals Vells intending to reach Can Pastilla while practicing this sport, the Civil Guard Command in the Balearic Islands reported. Upon reaching their destination, they realized one member of the group was missing and, unable to contact or see him, alerted the emergency services. The Maritime Service officers headed to the last position indicated by the missing man's mobile phone, about four miles southwest of Can Pastilla, and began their search following the direction of the waves. With only 45 minutes of daylight remaining and the waves being rough, they managed to locate him in approximately half an hour further out at sea, about four miles from his initial position. Once safe, he was taken to the port of Can Pastilla. The Civil Guard advises planning outings, checking the vessel, always carrying mandatory safety equipment (life jacket, flares, and first-aid kit), a mobile phone or VHF radio, and always checking sea conditions and weather alerts before setting out.
