More cement and more moorings in Can Picafort: they denounce a new occupation of the coast

The GOB demands that Ports-IB does not approve the project, which foresees 79 new moorings and nearly 70 anchorages on the seabed, without enough environmental guarantees

PalmaThe GOB has submitted allegations against the project for new nautical facilities at the Can Picafort Nautical Club and asks Ports-IB not to approve it in its current configuration. The environmental organization considers that the proposal, with 79 moorings, 5 piers, and nearly 70 anchors on the seabed, does not offer sufficient environmental guarantees.

According to the GOB, four of the piers would be intended for light sailing vessels and a fifth for the sailing school. The project also includes a new buoyage network and various land-based actions, such as about 140 meters of road, trenches, conduits, lighting, and concrete elements.

Doubts regarding the anchors

One of the GOB's main concerns is the nearly 70 helical anchors planned for the seabed. The organization believes that the documentation does not sufficiently allow for understanding the habitats and species present at the points where they would be installed.

The GOB also questions that they are labeled as "ecological" as a sufficient guarantee and demands that the possible effects of the anchors, chains, installation and removal tasks, and sediment resuspension be studied.

A coast already under pressure

The environmental organization also warns that the project must be assessed taking into account the pressures already borne by the coast of Can Picafort. In this regard, it recalls that a 2023 report already warned of the impact of nautical activity in the bathing area of Cala de l'Aigua Dolça.

For this reason, the GOB demands that the new moorings and facilities be assessed taking into account the cumulative effects on the coastline and marine habitats.

The GOB requests more information

Finally, the GOB demands that Ports-IB clarifies the administrative situation of the so-called Zone II and makes public the environmental studies to which the Yacht Club referred in September.

According to the entity, these reports are not part of the documentation that it has been able to consult. Therefore, it requests that, if they contain relevant environmental information, they be made public and a new period for allegations be opened.
