PalmaAbout fifteen members of Núcleo Nacional gathered this Sunday in front of the monument to the Baleares cruiser, at La Feixina, in an event that ended up bringing together more journalists than protesters. In parallel, more than a hundred people, called by the Antifascist Coordinator of Mallorca, stood in front of the Consolat de Mar to make clear their rejection of fascism and demand the definitive removal of the monolith.

When the participants of the Nucleo Nacional concentration arrived at La Feixina, they found the water surrounding the monument dyed red, as well as graffiti with anti-fascist protest messages. The action marked the beginning of an event with scarce participation and a notable media presence.

During the reading of the manifesto, the attendees defended the monument dedicated to the cruiser Baleares, built during Francoism to honor the dead of the ship sunk in 1938 during the Civil War. The organizers claimed these sailors as a symbol of "honor, valor, and service to the homeland", up to "giving their own lives".

In this context, the concentration in front of the Consolat de Mar has served to make this opposition visible. The demonstrators have unfurled banners with slogans such as 'Not one space for fascism', 'La Feixina does indeed fall' and 'We will overthrow fascism. Truth, justice, reparation and demolition'. Proclamations such as 'No Pasarán' and 'Mallorca will be the tomb of fascism' were also heard.

Institutional conflict

The controversy over the Feixina is not limited to the street. The Spanish government considers that the monument could violate the Democratic Memory Law and has requested its removal.

In contrast, the Palma City Council and the Balearic government maintain the heritage protection of the space after various judicial rulings and the cataloging approved by the Consell de Mallorca. This discrepancy keeps the future of the monument in a constant state of uncertainty.

With these two simultaneous concentrations, the Feixina once again proves to be one of the most sensitive spaces of recent memory in Palma. Between Francoist nostalgia and anti-fascist demands, the monument continues to be at the center of a debate that, far from closing, is periodically reactivated both in the street and in institutions.
