Nearly 1,500 tourist establishments found not paying the eco-tax
A procedure has now been initiated to determine how long it has been since they paid the Sustainable Tourism Tax.

PalmCross-referencing data between the Government and the island councils has identified 1,475 establishments with tourist licenses that were not listed in the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS) registry, and to which requests have been sent, according to a statement from the Ministry of Economy.
Among the 1,475 establishments registered in the councils' tourism registries but not listed in the ITS census, those that do not properly prove that they are not marketing their activity will be automatically registered by the Administration to ensure tax equity for all.
Once registration in the census has been formalized, a verification process is carried out to determine the start date of the activity declared by the holders and compare it with the date appearing in the councils' registries.
In the event of discrepancies, the date officially recorded in the island register is adjusted, the interested party is notified of the change, and the tax settlements are subsequently carried out retroactively. This action aims to ensure that the available information is accurate, consistent, and coordinated between the different administrations, and to ensure correct application of current tax regulations.
The Government and the Council of Mallorca agreed to cross-reference data to improve the management of tourist rentals in September 2023. The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) ruled in a ruling of April 27, 2022, that intermediary companies are obliged to provide tax information to the Treasury on the rental of tourist accommodation.
The Vice President of the Government, Toni Costa, stated that "this is a step forward in ensuring transparency and a level playing field among all tourist establishments." "Our goal is to ensure that everyone complies with the same obligations and that the resources raised are used for the well-being of all citizens of the Balearic Islands," he stated.
