PalmaThe Balearic Islands have raised the alert for rain and storms to orange level this Thursday due to the forecast of intense rainfall. Until the afternoon, the warning remained at yellow level, but Emergencies 112 has decided to increase its severity and activate level 1 severity (IG-1) of the Meteobal Plan. In addition, yellow alerts for coastal phenomena throughout the Archipelago and for squalls in Mallorca remain active.

Palma closes parks and the Maritime Promenade

Given the forecast of intense rainfall and storms, the Palma City Council has announced the closure of the Ribera, Can Terrers, and Bellver parks starting at 3:00 PM. The Maritime Promenade will be closed from 6:00 PM.

The areas will remain closed until the alert ends and according to the evolution of meteorological forecasts. The measure also implies the suspension of the Patis Oberts program. The Local Police have asked citizens for maximum caution and have recommended avoiding wooded areas and places where water may accumulate. They have also urged residents to check drains and secure objects on balconies and terraces. The City Council has also asked to exercise extreme caution due to the possibility of strong gusts of wind and coastal phenomena.

Civil Protection warns of flood risk

The Directorate General of Civil Protection has requested extreme caution due to the risk of heavy rainfall on the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, especially due to the possible sudden increase in the flow of streams and water levels. In case of travel, Civil Protection recommends avoiding non-essential trips and, if circulation is necessary, opting for main roads and motorways, reducing speed, and not stopping in areas where a large amount of water may accumulate or flow.

It also requests not to cross flooded sections either by vehicle or on foot, as it is not possible to know the depth of the water or what may be beneath the surface. In case of flooding, it is recommended to seek higher ground. The authorities also recall that during storms, the risk of lightning is particularly high in open spaces. Therefore, if a storm surprises you in the countryside, it is preferable to seek a high place and avoid taking shelter under trees, as well as staying away from fences and other metallic objects. In urban areas, the recommendation is to stay close to buildings to protect yourself from lightning. Inside homes, it is recommended to avoid drafts and close doors and windows.
