PalmaThe Directorate General for Emergencies has activated an orange alert for rain and storms in Ibiza and Formentera and a yellow alert for rain in Mallorca. A yellow warning for coastal phenomena has also been activated in Mallorca in response to the episode of bad weather that will affect the Balearic Islands over the next few days.

According to the forecast from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the most intense rainfall will reach the Pityusic Islands early this morning and will intensify on Sunday morning. They could leave up to 50 litres per square metre in one hour and accumulations of 160 litres in five or six hours. The situation could continue throughout Monday.

In Mallorca, the rain will begin on Sunday at midday, initially with intensities of between 20 and 30 litres per square metre in one hour. During the early hours and morning of Monday, it could intensify, especially in the south and east of the island, with rainfall of up to 50 litres per hour. For this reason, Aemet expects that the yellow warning could be upgraded to orange.

In Menorca, the rain will arrive later, between Sunday evening and Monday, and is expected to be less intense. The episode of rainfall and storms could last until Tuesday.

Given this situation, Emergencies recommends avoiding outdoor activities during the hours of heaviest rain and refraining from unnecessary travel. If it is necessary to drive, they ask to avoid torrents, flood-prone areas, and places where sudden accumulations of water may occur.

The Meteobal Plan advisory committee will meet again on Sunday to update the forecast and monitor the episode. Meanwhile, emergency services remain prepared to intervene if necessary.
