PalmaPalma City Council has recovered the old S’Aigua Dolça facilities as a new municipal sports center, which will open its doors to the public on October 15th. The facilities, located in El Terreno, next to the Paseo Marítimo, will be managed by the Municipal Sports Institute (IME).
The commissioning of the facilities is planned in three phases to adapt the services to the citizens' demand. From October 15th, the pool will be available for free use from Monday to Friday, from 4:30 PM to 9:30 PM, both for IME subscribers and for people who purchase a ticket. To this opening, the first physical activity and health promotion programs will be added.
The Healthy Aging-Active’t group, linked to the health zone of the Santa Catalina Health Center, will begin activity on October 15th, with sessions on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, from 10:30 to 11:30 hours. The Nordic Walking Sport program will begin on the 15th, with a second session scheduled for October 23rd and six more sessions during the months of November and December. The center's rooms will host the warm-up exercises and stretches that will accompany these sessions. For its part, the B@les program will be incorporated on November 3rd.
In a second phase, the center will extend the opening to full hours and will launch swimming courses for those over 15 years old and the Directed Activities Program (PAD). This offer will be added to that of Son Hugo, Son Moix, Germans Escalas and S’Estel, in accordance with the program's conditions. The third phase will complete the launch with the opening of the gym for subscribers. This gradual incorporation will allow for evaluating the operation of the spaces and adapting their programming.
Two swimming pools and spaces for different activities
The complex has a main pool with six lanes, measuring 25 by 11 meters and 1.40 meters deep, and another for learning, measuring 3.28 by 11 meters and 80 centimeters deep. Both together add up to 311.08 square meters of water surface. The area is completed with a 182-square-meter solarium.
The facility has two gym rooms, of 115 and 113 square meters, and three dedicated to the PAD, of 115, 113 and 36 square meters. To these five sports rooms, a multipurpose room of 36 square meters is added. Altogether, the six spaces total 528 square meters for sports and social activities.
The center incorporates ten changing rooms, including collective, individual, mixed individual, and one adapted individual. It will also have a parking lot managed by SMAP. The building's design takes advantage of natural light through an interior courtyard and glazed surfaces, and incorporates solutions to improve ventilation and reduce energy consumption.
Investment
The project involves a total investment of 10,285,860 euros. Of this amount, 3,251,716.42 euros come from European ERDF funds, through the Sustainable and Integrated Urban Development Strategy (EDUSI). The Council of Mallorca contributes 3,065,723.40 euros through economic reactivation grants derived from the COVID-19 crisis, in matters of sustainability and urban efficiency. The Palma City Council completes the funding with 3,968,420.18 euros. Furthermore, 50% of the ownership of the plot corresponds to the Ministry of Finance of the Government of Spain.
The recovery of the facility is accompanied by the renovation of Carrer de l’Aigua Dolça, within the framework of the “Renove” Plan for El Terreno. In this regard, improvements have been carried out on the sidewalks and pedestrian crossings, and the paving and drainage have been repaired.
