Palma residents reclaim the Slaughterhouse with an outdoor dinner to demand its use
The Salvem l’Escorxador platform gathered the neighbors in a day to demand the maintenance of the space and recover the buildings and areas that are currently closed or underutilized
The SlaughterhouseA group of Palma residents turned the Escorxador into a meeting point with a protest dinner outdoors to demand that this municipal space recover its activity and once again play a central role in the life of the neighborhood. The event brought together residents of Camp Redó, Cas Capiscol, and Santa Pagesa, and Madò Farta also attended.
The initiative was promoted by the Salvem l'Escorxador platform, created to denounce the deterioration that, according to its members, the site is suffering and to demand action from the City Council. During the day, different activities and an outdoor dinner were organized, which served to bring neighbors together and give visibility to their demands.
They are demanding the recovery of a space that is currently underutilized
The platform considers that the Slaughterhouse (l'Escorxador), a historic building designed by Gaspar Bennàssar, should once again be a space of social and cultural reference for the surrounding neighborhoods. Among its main demands are a maintenance plan, improvements to ensure safety, and the recovery of spaces that are currently closed or unused.
Neighbors point out, among other problems, the presence of a propped-up wall next to the playground, the poor condition of some facilities, and various maintenance deficiencies. They also demand that the use of the different spaces within the complex be decided with citizen participation.
Among the possibilities they propose are the recovery of the warehouse that had housed the Sant Joan gastronomic market, as well as the creation of art workshops, rehearsal rooms, spaces for children's activities, and an agri-food market.
The platform also recalls that in 2021, Mercasa stopped managing the complex after three decades. Since then, according to the neighbors, the space has remained in a kind of "limbo" and has lost part of its activity.
The demand, therefore, is not limited to recovering the Slaughterhouse for a specific event, but to reopening it to the neighborhood, keeping it in good condition, and giving it a future project.
