Petra prohibits the passage of vehicles on the Bonany path during orange alerts for temperatures
The measure aims to prevent fires that may arise from heatwaves
PalmaThe Petra Town Hall has issued a statement establishing the immediate restriction of vehicle traffic on the Bonany road whenever the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) declares a yellow alert for temperatures. However, residents of the area will still have access.
The measure aims to prevent dangerous situations and ensure public safety in the most frequented forest and mountain areas of the municipality: it seeks to avoid the provocation of fires, which have already affected several areas of the peninsula. It will be carried out in coordination with the City Council and the Local Police of Petra.
The regulation will be automatically activated at the moment AEMET declares the yellow alert: the Bonany road will be completely restricted to vehicle traffic. This will be indicated by a barrier on the side of the road informing about the measure. Likewise, the prohibition is only effective during the time the yellow alert is active.
The circulation ban affects cars, buses, minibuses, motorcycles, and mopeds, as well as any other vehicle with an engine.
“We have taken this measure for safety and to prevent risks. The problem is that motorcycles and some quad excursions and coaches or other vehicles go up, and when they meet, they have to maneuver to pass. This hustle, combined with the high temperatures and the dry wooded area, makes us fear that a spark or any flammable element will cause a fire,” explained Salvador Femenias, the mayor of Petra.
Femenias pointed out that there are private forest areas in conditions that can favor the provocation of a fire. In addition, the Town Hall has called for the population's responsibility: they have requested that the signage and the indications of the security forces be respected in order to guarantee the safety of the residents of the area.
Finally, other measures are added to this one, such as the suspension of fireworks displays and municipalities in the region.
