Orange alert for risk of storms and floods in the Balearic Islands

PalmaThe Balearic Islands are on orange alert due to the risk of storms and flooding ahead of an episode of instability that will persist over the next few days. Aemet and Civil Protection have warned of the possibility of locally heavy or very heavy downpours and flash floods in some parts of the Archipelago.
The warning has been brought forward to this Wednesday afternoon in view of the evolution of the meteorological situation. The episode will be marked by the entry of cold air at high altitude and a significant influx of humidity from the Mediterranean, conditions that will favour the formation of showers and storms.
In the Balearic Islands, moreover, an area of low pressure located between the south-east coast of the peninsula and the Archipelago will favour a humid flow from the east. This situation can lead to intense precipitation and raises the risk of local, sudden and rapid flooding, especially in low-lying areas and places susceptible to water accumulation.
Civil Protection considers the potential danger level of the situation to be high and recommends following the evolution of the weather warnings.
More storms starting Friday
The situation of instability will not end with Wednesday's episode. According to Aemet, the Balearic Islands may also be affected by locally heavy or very heavy stormy downpours, especially from the late hours of Friday onwards.
Precipitation will continue throughout the weekend, in principle with less intensity. The episode could last until at least Monday, October 5th.
From Sunday onwards, the isolation of a DANA (isolated depression at high levels) to the west of the Peninsula will contribute to maintaining the instability. Its evolution, however, presents high uncertainty, both regarding the intensity and the location of the most significant precipitation episodes.
This uncertainty means that the forecast may change in upcoming updates. Small variations in the evolution of the different atmospheric systems could modify the areas of the Balearic Islands that end up receiving the most intense rainfall.
For this reason, Civil Protection and Aemet recommend following the updates of warnings and weather forecasts over the coming days and exercising extreme caution in the face of possible episodes of intense rain.
