PalmA 70-year-old woman died this Friday after an explosion in the house where she lived, registered early this morning in Migjorn Gran, according to the Menorca Health Area. The victim had initially been hospitalized in critical condition, but could not overcome her injuries.

The events took place around 00:30 hours in a building on Maria Auxiliadora street, as confirmed by sources from the Civil Guard. Emergency services received a call alerting them to an explosion inside a home and, upon arrival, proceeded to secure the area and evacuate nearby buildings to avoid risks.

Inside the affected home, only the woman was present, who suffered serious burns as a result of the blast. Initially, she was attended by health teams and urgently transferred to the Mateu Orfila Hospital, where she was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) in a very serious condition. Hours later, however, she died due to the severity of her injuries.

A dozen evacuated

Although the victim has been the only person injured, the explosion has forced the evacuation of 11 residents from neighboring homes, who could not spend the night in their houses for safety reasons.

The Ciutadella Firefighters have been in charge of extinguishing the flames caused by the explosion and, together with the Judicial Police unit of the Civil Guard, have initiated an investigation to clarify the causes of the incident.

The first hypotheses suggest that the detonation could have been caused by a gas leak inside the home, although the investigations remain open.
