Seven battery storage facility projects put Alcúdia on alert: ANACA demands immediate explanations
The entity demands transparency regarding the possible implementation of lithium-ion installations, some on rural land, linked to the new Penbal 2 electrical interconnection.
PalmANACA has raised serious concerns about the possible existence of up to seven battery storage system projects in the municipality of Alcúdia, some of which could be located on rural land. The organization is urging the City Council to clarify "without delay" the actual status of these facilities associated with the Peninsula-Balearic Islands electrical interconnection (Penbal 2), after other municipalities such as Santa Maria and Pollença learned of similar projects when they were already well underway.
According to the Environmental Impact Study Addendum, two of the projects are located in the Ca na Lloreta industrial park—Sant Mar BESS and BESS Baleares 3—both of which underwent public consultation in 2024, with one receiving a favorable environmental impact statement. The other five projects are located around the Murterar power plant and have requested a connection point from Redeia, despite not having initiated any administrative procedures. ANACA expresses particular concern about the possible installation of industrial lithium-ion systems in rural areas due to the landscape impact, the risk of fires, the effect on natural spaces, and the need for new infrastructure. The organization urges the City Council to act proactively and take advantage of its positive relationship with Redeia to avoid surprises in the coming months.
Furthermore, it questions the €150 million annual savings announced by Redeia with the new power cable and demands guarantees that this benefit will not be offset by the proliferation of battery projects and potential energy speculation. "The citizens of Alcúdia cannot be expected to find out about high-impact initiatives that are moving forward without public information only after the fact," states the organization, which urges the City Council to act with transparency and clarity.
