PalmRecent storms have washed away almost all the sand from the most popular beaches on Menorca's south coast. The force of the wind and the pounding waves have completely devastated the beaches of Binigaus, Sant Tomàs, and Sant Adeodat, in the municipality of Migjorn Gran, as well as the first stretch of Son Bou (Alaior), the island's longest beach. In the case of Son Bou, the remaining almost two and a half kilometers of coastline are now reduced to just a third of their original dune system. This significant reduction in sand has sparked concern among the affected municipalities just over two months before the official start of the tourist season.

Beach cleaning crews began work this Friday in the coves of Migjorn Gran, removing stones and pebbles while awaiting repairs from the Coastal Authority to the walkways and access and rescue facilities damaged by the storms. The weather situation, however, offers no respite. At 6:00 PM this afternoon, Menorca was placed on alert again due to the forecast of waves between six and eight meters high and winds that could reach 70 km/h.

The adverse conditions forecast for the weekend have also forced the shipping company Baleària to cancel all maritime routes between the ports of Ciutadella, Alcúdia and Barcelona for both Friday and Saturday.
