PalmaThe Ministry of Education and Universities will incorporate during the 2026-2027 academic year a person responsible for supervising the operation of school canteens in the educational centers of the Balearic Islands. The new figure will have to control the quality of the service, the organization of the spaces and the attention received by the students during meals, as reported this Wednesday by the autonomous department.

Among its functions will be the verification of compliance with the established ratios between monitors and students, as well as the monitoring of measures aimed at increasing the presence and consumption of local and organic products in school menus.

The responsible person will also supervise the general organization of the canteens and will monitor educational centers that have a cafeteria, with the aim of ensuring that these spaces correctly carry out their functions and comply with the corresponding regulations.

Coordination with health inspectors

Another of the tasks will be to act as a liaison with the health inspectors responsible for reviewing the hygienic conditions of school canteens. In this way, the new role will also contribute to the control of food safety in educational centers.

The Ministry argues that the incorporation of this profile will allow for increased supervision of a service that directly affects the well-being of students and improve its management.

The objective, according to the department, is to ensure that canteens offer healthy food and adequate attention to students, while also strengthening the presence of local and organic products on the menus. The measure is part of Education's commitment to reinforce the control of complementary services in centers during the 2026-2027 academic year.
