PalmaThe State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) issued a special note this Thursday afternoon warning that in the coming days, especially from Sunday, a very dry and warm mass will cause very high temperatures, with "a significant level of danger" and a possible heatwave until Tuesday in the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. "In the coming days, a ridge is expected over our territory and a trough that will be located to the west of the Iberian Peninsula. This configuration, combined with high insolation, high stability, and light winds, will favor the generation and spread across a large part of the territory of a very dry and warm mass," the agency indicated.

The consequence will be "an episode of very high and persistent temperatures from Sunday the 5th and during a large part of next week, especially in the river valleys and depressions of the interior of the peninsula". The Agency warns of "a significant level of danger during the central hours, especially for outdoor activities and for vulnerable people (elderly, those suffering from cardiovascular diseases, etc.), with nights that will also be very warm in many areas". The risk of fire will also "increase generally to very high levels".

An "increase in instability is also expected at the beginning of next week, with probable afternoon thunderstorms with little precipitation in mountainous areas". There is a high degree of uncertainty in the extent and duration of the phenomenon, due to the evolution in the position of the trough.

Aemet's forecast extends to all of Spain: temperatures of 36-38 °C are expected to be generally reached in a large part of the Peninsula and in the interior of the Balearic Islands, 38-40 °C.
