PalmaThe Llavanera torrent overflowed this Monday in Vila after the Adam storm left 150 liters per square meter in just 36 hours in the city of Ibiza, 80 of which have fallen since three in the morning. The rainfall has once again caused flooding of streets and commercial establishments, especially in the Pratet neighborhood, one of the hardest hit by the storm. The situation has also forced the closure of numerous roads, complicated access to the airport, and put emergency services on alert due to the rising of torrents in the north and northeast of the island.
The storm has especially affected Vila, Santa Eulària, and Sant Joan, where the rains have flooded sections of road and hindered travel. Emergency services sent a new ES-Alert message to the population's mobile phones this morning due to the intensity of the rainfall and the risk of flooding. The authorities ask people to avoid unnecessary travel and not to cross flooded roads.
El Pratet suffers from flooding again
One of the most affected points in Vila has been the Pratet neighborhood, in the vicinity of Santa Eulària avenue and the port. Water has entered several commercial premises, especially in the area located between the Pratet parking lot and les Feixes, and has forced merchants and workers to spend a good part of the morning removing the accumulated water.
The consequences have been uneven. Some establishments managed to protect their entrances with makeshift barriers, while others suffered significant flooding. This is the case of the Isla Azul glassware shop, located on Diputat Josep Ribas street, where the water flooded the premises. A few meters away, the Cabiro building, which had suffered serious flooding during last year's storm, this time avoided damage thanks to the protective measures adopted and improvements to the drainage.
The floods have also reopened the debate about the rainwater drainage capacity in this sector of Vila. Residents and shopkeepers point to the Pratet parking lot as a possible factor that worsens water accumulation, since the large paved surface becomes flooded during episodes of intense rainfall. Those affected are demanding improvements to the drains to prevent water from ending up reaching the streets and businesses. This relationship, however, is not supported by any known technical report.
During the morning, workers and drainage equipment were mobilized to remove the accumulated water and facilitate its evacuation. The Santa Eulària avenue, one of the main entry roads to the city, remained closed for several hours and was later partially reopened.
Roads closed in Santa Eulària and at the access points to Vila
The rainfall has caused numerous incidents on the road network of Ibiza. In Santa Eulària, the City Council has announced the closure of the roads to Figueral, Cala Llenya, Cala Mestella, Morna, and Atzaró, which have been affected by the accumulation of water and the rising of the torrents.
Another of the main incidents has been the closure of the airport road, between kilometer points 3 and 5.5, in both directions of traffic. According to the latest communication from the Council of Ibiza during the morning, this section remained closed.
In Vila, problems have also been recorded on the E-20, especially at the Blancadona underpass, where traffic had to be diverted via the upper branch. The Gorg ring roads and the access to the port via Avinguda de Santa Eulària have suffered restrictions, while on the EI-600, at the height of La Coma, the right lane in the direction of Vila has been cut off.
The Jesús roundabout has also been affected by the floods. During the morning, partial re-openings of some accesses occurred, although the authorities warn that traffic may be restricted again if new intense rainfall is recorded.
Torrents overflowing in the north of the island
The situation is also complicated in Santa Eulària and Sant Joan, where several torrents have experienced significant rises and have overflowed in some spots. The Director General of Emergencies, Pablo Gárriz, has warned that the storm's rainfall is more intense than initially forecast, with very active stormy cores that are discharging large amounts of water in short intervals. The floods are especially affecting the areas of Cala, Figueral, Sant Carles, and the Serra de Morna. Emergencies has also warned of the danger of landslides on some roads in the north of the island and has requested extreme caution.
The persistence of the rains during the last few days has increased the flow of the torrents, so the risk may remain even if the precipitation decreases temporarily.
El Codolar accumulates cancellations and delays
The storm has also affected air transport. The Codolar airport had to interrupt activity on Sunday for two periods due to heavy rainfall and the necessary tasks to remove the water accumulated in the facilities. According to the balance provided by Aena on Sunday evening, Ibiza airport recorded 27 cancelled flights and 16 diverted ones. The floods also caused incidents at the terminal and in the parking lots, where measures had to be taken to ensure the safety of users.
This Monday, air traffic disruptions continue due to adverse weather conditions. Enaire has reported air traffic regulations in the Mediterranean and the Balearic Islands for safety reasons, while Palma airport has recorded about twenty delays, two of which correspond to flights destined for Ibiza.
There is still no confirmed global balance of the delays accumulated this Monday specifically at Codolar. Added to the operational incidents are the difficulties of access by road, after the Council had to cut off a section of the highway that connects the airport with Vila.
Emergency services maintain surveillance and classes are suspended
The storm has forced the mobilization of numerous emergency personnel in the Pityusic Islands. Between 10:00 p.m. on Sunday and 6:30 a.m. on Monday, the 112 service registered 11 new incidents in Ibiza, mainly related to flooding, fallen trees, and problems on public roads.
The DANA (isolated high-altitude depression) has also forced the suspension of in-person school activities this Monday in Ibiza and Formentera. The Island Council of Ibiza has closed sports facilities, the Cas Serres Island Library, the vehicle inspection (ITV) stations, and the driving test center, among other services. Emergency services are maintaining surveillance over torrents and flood-prone areas, given the possibility of new intense downpours occurring. The authorities insist that torrents and flooded roads should not be crossed and that travel should be limited to what is essential while the risk lasts.
