PalmaA Palma court has ordered the imprisonment of the truck driver who caused a multiple-vehicle traffic accident on the Ma-13 motorway this Thursday and tested positive for alcohol. The 63-year-old man was brought before a judge this Friday morning, charged with a crime against road safety and another of serious disobedience.

The Civil Guard arrested him after the accident, which took place at 8:45 AM just before the Son Fuster exit and left five people injured. The driver tested positive on the breathalyzer test and was arrested as the alleged perpetrator of a crime against road safety and another of serious disobedience.

The accident occurred before the Son Fuster exit, heading towards Palma, when a truck collided with several vehicles—seven were involved—which occupied the central and right lanes of the motorway and caused traffic jams of up to four kilometers. According to SAMU 061, five people were taken to the Son Espases, Son Llàtzer, and Juaneda hospitals, two in less serious condition and three with minor injuries. 12 more people received medical attention and were discharged at the scene of the accident.

The Civil Guard Traffic Group has opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances under which the multiple-vehicle accident occurred. The officers dispatched to the scene, upon observing that the driver of the involved truck showed clear signs of being under the influence of alcohol, subjected him to a breathalyzer test.

Sources close to the investigation have confirmed to Europa Press that the 63-year-old man tested positive, and therefore one of the possible causes of the accident is that he lost control of the vehicle due to his state of intoxication.
