PalmaThe Emergency service of the Hospital of Manacor has been recognized with the BSH (Best Spanish Hospitals Awards) 2026 award as the best hospital Emergency service among medium-sized public hospitals. The award compares the results of the centers based on real data from their healthcare activity.

The award was presented this Wednesday in Madrid at an event that brought together representatives of hospitals from all over the country. On behalf of the Manacor service, the statuette was collected by the deputy medical director, Pere Serra; the head of Emergencies, Daniel García; the coordinator of the Critical Care area, Elena Barceló, and the person in charge of Coding, Jaime Artero.

The BSH awards, organized by Higia Benchmarking through the Benchmarking Sanitario 3.0 platform, compare hospitals according to their activity and group them by centers with similar characteristics. In the case of Emergency services, the indicators take into account factors such as the severity and age of the patients and the health problem, with the aim of comparing healthcare efficiency under equivalent conditions.

More than 80,000 emergencies in 2025

Manacor Hospital is the reference center for emergency hospital care in the Llevant region, an area with a population of about 167,500 inhabitants that increases considerably during the tourist season.

During 2025, the service attended to more than 80,000 emergencies, an average of over 220 patients per day. Of these, nearly 7,000 needed to be admitted to the hospital.

Added to the high volume of activity is the growing complexity of cases, linked, according to the center, to the aging of the population and the increase in chronic diseases. This makes it increasingly common to treat patients with several health problems at once, requiring more tests and closer coordination between professionals.

The head of Emergency Services, Daniel García, has highlighted that the award is a recognition of the entire team and has remarked that the indicators place the service "as a reference among hospitals of our size." García has assured that the prize is not "a point of arrival," but a stimulus to continue improving patient care.

A line of continuous improvement

The Manacor Emergency service has held ISO 9001 certification since 2009, as well as UNE 179003 Patient Safety certification. Furthermore, it was a finalist for the Best in Class awards in the 2009, 2011, and 2012 editions.

Currently, the service is working on an improvement project based on the Lean methodology that reviews the patient's journey from their arrival at the Emergency Department until discharge or admission, with the goal of reducing waiting times and improving care. The project is being developed while the expansion works at the Hospital of Manacor, planned in the Master Plan, continue.
