PalmThe Council of Ministers approved this Tuesday the declaration of a migration emergency in the Balearic Islands, in response to the increase in migrants arriving on the islands' coasts throughout 2025 and the need to strengthen humanitarian assistance for these individuals. This declaration incorporates an investment of 6.75 million euros, according to the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, and will be in effect until December 31, 2025.

Given the 80% increase in the number of people arriving in the Islands by boat so far this year, the Secretary of State for Migration issued a resolution last August, which considered it a priority that the program could cover these needs as soon as possible.

Following the trend observed last year and the geopolitical situation in the Western Mediterranean, the Ministry of Migration launched, starting in the first quarter of 2025, a daily and detailed monitoring of migrants accessing the Archipelago through the coasts, with the aim of.

Under this premise and the declaration of a migration emergency, the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration has been developing, since the August resolution, the first actions associated with an infrastructure plan that includes the implementation of emergency temporary reception facilities, staff reinforcements, and the provision of services and supplies.

Modular spaces in Ibiza, Formentera, and Palma

Among the reception infrastructure plans are two modular facilities for the temporary accommodation of migrants in traffic at the ports of Ibiza and Formentera, "opening imminently." These two spaces will soon be joined by a third, planned for the port of Palma. These facilities, equipped with security, hygiene, and air conditioning services, also include specific spaces for the accommodation of women and minors.

The humanitarian assistance program aims to address the basic needs of migrants in vulnerable situations due to physical deterioration and a lack of social, family, and economic support, who arrive on the Spanish coast or enter Spain through the cities of Ceuta and Melilla. This is an emergency program whose ultimate objective is to guarantee fundamental rights and ensure respect for the dignity of these individuals.
