The Alcudia desalination plant will bring water to the Pla de Mallorca

The Government will extend the network to populations that do not have guaranteed supply in quantity or quality.

ARA Balears

PalmThe Balearic Government has taken the first step toward expanding the Alcudia desalination plant, and will do so through the Sustainable Tourism Tax (STT). Specifically, the Regional Ministry of the Sea and the Water Cycle has initiated the process of contracting technical assistance services for drafting the expansion project for the Alcudia Bay Marine Water Desalination Plant (SWD) . The project represents an investment of €207,748.35 (excluding VAT), financed by the SDT 2024-2025 program - Pact for Water Management and Resource Guarantee.

The Balearic Government considers this action essential to meet current needs and guarantee supply to other towns where extension projects to the Abaqua network are also being drafted or contracted, such as Alcudia, Sa Pobla, Can Picafort, Manacor, and the Pla de Mallorca.

According to Abaqua estimates, the daily requirement for desalinated water could exceed 22,000 m³/day, a figure that clearly exceeds the current capacity of the plant, which is currently undergoing technological updating through new energy recovery equipment, through another contract awarded in 2025 to reduce.

The Alcúdia desalination plant, in operation since 2010 and without significant expansions since its start-up, currently has a production capacity of 14,000 m³/day, expandable to 15,000 m³/day with the planned technical improvements.

However, population growth and the new supply agreements with the municipalities of Alcúdia, Sa Pobla, Can Picafort, Manacor and El Pla place the demand at a volume that will require an expansion of the plant's production capacity.

Project writing

The project will be contracted with a base budget of €207,748.35 (excluding VAT), representing a total of €251,375.50 (including VAT). Funding will be distributed over two annual installments: €41,549.67 (excluding VAT) in 2025 and €166,198.68 (excluding VAT) in 2026.

The contract will have a 180-day execution period, which may be suspended upon receipt of the necessary authorizations.

This project is part of the set of water infrastructure projects promoted by the Government within the plan to transform the water resources management model and is part of the policy of the Regional Ministry of the Sea and the Water Cycle and the Directorate-General for Water Resources for the recovery and protection of groundwater aquifers. This project will be funded by the Sustainable Tourism Tax.
