The helicopter La Milana carries out 271 interventions in the first year
The vehicle of the Mallorca Firefighters has made an average of 22 departures monthly and faces the summer campaign with a new system to reinforce fire extinguishing
PalmaThe rescue helicopter of the Bombers de Mallorca, the Milana, has completed 271 interventions during its first year of service, more than half of which have been rescues, mainly in the Tramuntana mountain range. The report, released this Tuesday by the Consell de Mallorca, confirms that the aircraft has established itself as a key tool in both mountain emergencies and in fire prevention and extinction tasks.
Of the total operations, 150 were rescues, while 101 corresponded to prevention and practice services, and 20 to interventions in forest fires. In total, the Milana has registered an average of nearly 22 monthly sorties.
The majority of rescues have been concentrated in the Tramuntana mountain range, especially in the municipalities of Escorca, Pollença, Deià, Valldemossa, Banyalbufar, Sóller, Fornalutx, Puigpunyent, and Andratx, areas where a large part of the island's hiking activity is concentrated.
The months of May and June of this year have been the busiest, with 35 interventions each, followed by October 2025, with 32 operations. According to the Consell, this increase coincides with the rise in mountain excursions, the reinforcement of preventive tasks, and the start of the forest fire prevention and extinction campaign.
To commemorate the first anniversary of the helicopter's incorporation, the Consell de Mallorca organized a day event this Tuesday at the Cala Figuera lighthouse, in Calvià, where a rescue was simulated and a fire extinction demonstration was carried out to showcase the device's operational capabilities.
During the event, the president of the Consell, Llorenç Galmés, stated that the incorporation of the Milana has represented "a quantitative leap in the response capacity" of the Bombers de Mallorca and has championed the work carried out by the emergency services.
Reinforcement for the summer campaign
The Firefighters of Mallorca face the summer campaign with a device made up of 45 firefighters, ready to respond to the emergencies typical of this time of year.
In this operation, La Milana will incorporate a Bambi-type helitank, a tank suspended below the helicopter that allows loading and unloading large quantities of water on fires. According to the Council, this system will reinforce the capacity of the extinguishing teams, especially in areas with difficult access by land.
