Palma"The situation is very hard, unstable and inhumane." This is how homeless people in Ibiza describe the reality they live every day, marked not only by the lack of a home, but also by the emotional exhaustion and the feeling of being "judged all the time." They expressed this on Thursday during the reading of a manifesto on the occasion of Homeless Persons Day, in a protest act organized by Caritas Diocesana of Ibiza at the Vara de Rey promenade.
Under the slogan 'A home is much more than a place to live, it is a place to belong', the initiative sought to give visibility to the reality of homelessness and claim the right to decent housing. The participants recalled that having a home does not consist solely of having a roof, but of having a space where they can feel "safe, calm, loved and accompanied."
During the reading of the manifesto, they asked society to stop viewing homelessness as a personal choice. "This is not a choice, anyone could be in this situation," they claimed. They also assured that they would change "everything" to have a decent home.
A reality that goes beyond individual decisions
Homeless people have insisted that residential exclusion is not the individual responsibility of those who suffer from it. Behind the lack of housing, they have pointed out, there are social, economic, and political causes that can leave people without alternatives.
In this sense, they have denounced that the social system does not provide a sufficient response to the needs of those living on the street. The lack of resources and the saturation of services make it difficult for affected people to get out of this situation and recover dignified living conditions.
The manifesto also warns that the increase in homeless people is "alarming and unacceptable." As they have explained, more and more people are falling outside the social protection system, which fails to guarantee even the most basic rights.
They demand a home where they can rebuild their lives
The central demand of the event has been that everyone can access decent housing and an environment where they can feel part of society. The participants have focused on the consequences of living without a home, a situation that not only implies the lack of a physical space, but also insecurity, loneliness, and a strong emotional impact.
With this action on the Vara de Rey promenade, Caritas Diocesana of Ibiza and the participants wanted to remind that homelessness cannot be addressed as an individual problem, but as a reality that requires a collective response, more resources, and policies capable of guaranteeing the right to housing.
