The largest Pitiusa will prohibit building or renovating houses if there is no water
In Ibiza there will be more requirements for building new homes
PalmIbiza does not want to maintain this strain on natural resources, and the Consell government team has decided to take a clearly restrictive measure: no new homes may be built or any renovations carried out without water. This provision will be included in the revision of the Island Territorial Plan (PTI), which is already on the way to final approval. "Specifically, what we propose is that if you are in an area where the aquifer is in poor condition, which is the case in most areas, you will have to ensure that you have desalinated water available or you simply won't be able to obtain a license," explains Mariano Juan, councilor of the Department of Territory, Tourism Planning, Mobility, Road Infrastructure, and the Fight against Intruders.
Furthermore, the revised PTI will also require new homes and those being renovated to have grey water circuits for the reuse of natural resources," he adds. Juan claims that this winter they have made thousands of truck trips with desalinated water for the population, which have saved 100,000 cubic meters of water from the aquifers. "Unfortunately, we can't do it now because there's no more desalinated water, but we will repeat the experience when it's over. Tests are being conducted to mix desalinated and treated water in the Sa Rota reservoir, so that the resource can be used and farmers can irrigate."
