The ordeal of a worker in a Mallorca hotel: "They made me live in a bathroom, with a mattress on the floor"
The young woman accuses a Majorcan hotel of having housed her in an unsanitary space by giving her room to tourists and assures that the experience has caused her physical and psychological problems
PalmA young worker has denounced, through social networks, the conditions in which a hotel in Mallorca, for which she worked, kept her during her stay at the company. Living in a bathroom, with a mattress on the floor and completely unsanitary conditions, which led to health problems, and psychological abuse that has finally taken its toll, despite having already left the company.
The case began at the beginning of February, when an external company hired her to be a Guess experience at a hotel in Mallorca. The young woman had already worked in several hotel establishments both in Spain and abroad. In the offer, they assured her that, in addition to her salary, she would have an individual room in the hotel where she would reside for the duration of the contract.
Upon arrival at the hotel, it was like that, but only two days later they told her that she had to leave the room, to give it to a tourist who was paying, and they told her not to worry because they had prepared another room for her. When she entered the door of what was supposed to be her residence, she saw that it was not a room, but a bathroom where they had placed a mattress on the floor. "It was a completely unsanitary space, it smelled a lot of sewage, I woke up at 6 in the morning to vomit and then I had to go to work and be very cheerful and friendly with the clients," the worker denounces in the Instagram post.
Faced with the surrealism of the situation, the young woman telephoned the company manager and demanded to live in a room again, since where they had relocated her was a place with "unworthy conditions for any human being". The company's response was to ask for "patience" and assure her that it was an isolated incident and that in less than a week she would be able to enjoy the room they had promised her again. This new promise was never fulfilled either. After a few days of living in that bathroom, the young worker had to go to the emergency room with a headache and vomiting. "Being locked up in that burrow was costing me my health," she explains.
At that moment, and given the total inaction of the hotel company, the worker decided to spend two nights in a hostel and explained to the hotel that she was forced to pay for this new accommodation due to the conditions in which they made her sleep. It should be noted that all this was caused because the hotel had decided to give her room to a tourist to charge more money. Despite this, the company flatly refused to pay her the money she was paying, without even having collected her first salary.
Fed up with the situation, the young woman asked the company to notify occupational health and safety to analyze her situation. Her surprise grew even more when she discovered that the person who came on behalf of occupational health and safety was another worker from the same hotel. During the analysis of her case, the hotel managers made it seem to the occupational health and safety worker that they were not aware of her living in a bathroom with a mattress on the floor, and asked her to find accommodation on her own, but that in this case the company would pay for it. The next day, however, the company retracted and assured her that it would not pay her anything and that if she wanted to continue working and enjoy the salary and housing offer, she had to live in that room (the bathroom).
When she saw that her only option was to stay and live there for the duration of the contract in an unsanitary and "practically inhuman" situation, she decided to submit her resignation letter, but her ordeal did not end there. After this experience, the young woman suffered numerous anxiety attacks and became socially isolated. "I fell into a spiral, they played with me, manipulation after manipulation, I have worked in many places and right now I feel ashamed of being Spanish and of my country," she explains in the video. "I wonder if they would have treated their daughter, sister, or mother the same way," she concludes.
The worker has already placed the case in the hands of justice and has documented everything that happened during her stay as a worker at the Majorcan hotel company.
On the other hand, the young woman also denounces that the company did not provide her with a uniform, unlike other colleagues, and that they demanded that she buy "elegant" clothes to deal with customers, but they refused to pay her anything, everything had to be at her expense, despite it being an imposition from the company. For the young woman, it is just another example of the manipulation and how this hotel company treats its workers.
