PalmaThe housing encampment in Palma has called for several neighborhood assemblies across the city to prepare for the general housing strike on November 11th. The initiative aims to involve residents in organizing the day of protest, which is framed as a mobilization "against the housing business." In parallel, Arran and the Student Union of the Catalan Countries (SEPC) have announced three strike committees to begin mobilizing the youth of Mallorca.
The encampment organization has shared a calendar of assemblies on social media that will run from this Tuesday until November 7th. The meetings will be held in the squares of Pere Garau, Reina Maria Cristina, Cala Moreia, París, Pius IV, Quadrado, and Madrid. The final organizational assembly will take place on Sunday, November 8th, at Plaça d'Espanya, three days before the strike.
During these meetings, participants will address issues such as the possibilities of taking advantage of rental contract extensions and other legal doubts related to housing. Measures to decommodify it and improve living conditions in the neighborhoods will also be discussed, in addition to the necessary actions to organize the day of the strike.
Arran and the SEPC call on the youth to mobilize
For their part, Arran and the SEPC have called three open assemblies this Wednesday with the aim of beginning to mobilize the Mallorcan youth and "break the normality" on November 11.
The strike committees will meet at the Es 4 Cantons athenaeum in Felanitx, at the Manacor Theatre, and at the La Fonera popular athenaeum. The youth organizations have announced that they will call for more assemblies, including one at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), and have issued a call to people who want to organize them in their towns to get in touch.
The goal of the committees is to halt productive and educational activity at work and study centers and involve the youth in a day they aspire to turn into a “historic” one.
Criticism of the parties and the majority unions
The two youth organizations have also expressed their rejection of the strike potentially being used, as they denounce, for electoral purposes. "It cannot be allowed" for the mobilization to be used for propaganda by institutional left-wing parties and major unions, they stated in a release.
Arran and the SEPC maintain that these groups have been present in governments for years without solving the problems of the working class. Therefore, they claim the general strike as a tool for workers to drive changes in their living conditions. Neighborhood assemblies and youth committees are part of the preparations ahead of November 11th, with the desire to extend the mobilization beyond Palma and involve various social sectors in the protest for the right to housing.
