PalmThe SAMU 061 emergency system has incorporated a new unit specialized in high-complexity pediatric and neonatal transport. The vehicle, presented today by the Minister of Health, Manuela García, will allow for improved care and transfer of critical patients between hospitals in Mallorca, and will also serve Menorca and Ibiza. The new ambulance is conceived as a mobile extension of the intensive care units of the Son Espases University Hospital. The objective is for professionals to be able to initiate advanced care wherever the patient is and maintain it throughout the journey to the reference center.

During the presentation, heads of the IB-Salut and the pediatric transport unit also attended, who highlighted the increase in activity of this service, with hundreds of annual mobilizations related to serious cases in pediatric age.

Modern technologies

The vehicle has been equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology, capable of replicating an intensive care environment on the move. It features advanced ventilation systems, transport incubators, comprehensive monitoring, and high-complexity respiratory support, enabling critical situations to be managed with clinical stability during transit.

Structural improvements have also been incorporated, such as a more spacious cabin, reinforced electrical systems, and special suspension to reduce the impact of movement on the patient. Furthermore, the air conditioning and filtration system ensures controlled environmental conditions throughout the journey.

One of the most unique elements of the project is the commitment to making the space more child-friendly. The vehicle's decoration has involved the participation of schoolchildren from centers in Alaró, Son Serra, and La Vileta, in Palma. Entertainment elements and the possibility for a family member to accompany the child during transport have also been added. With this new addition, Salut asserts that the Balearic Islands are strengthening their response capacity in critical pediatric health transport, an area where speed and specialization are decisive.
