The Spanish army watches three Russian navy ships in Mallorca
It is a Russian corvette, a frigate and a supply ship that were escorting two merchant ships
PalmA Spanish army maritime action vessel escorted and monitored three Russian Navy vessels as they passed through the Mediterranean Sea, specifically off the coast of Mallorca. According to a statement issued this Wednesday by the Defence Staff (EMAD), the vessels were a Russian corvette, a frigate, and an supply ship, accompanying two merchant ships during their westward navigation in the Mediterranean.
The location and subsequent tracking of the Russian units began south of Mallorca, coinciding with their entry into Spanish Exclusive Economic Zone waters. From there, the Spanish army vessel continuously monitored them during their transit through the Alboran Sea and the crossing of the Strait of Gibraltar, ending the monitoring when the vessels reached the Portuguese Exclusive Economic Zone.
These actions of presence, surveillance, and deterrence are part of the permanent missions of the Navy aimed at ensuring maritime security, preserving freedom of navigation, and contributing to collective deterrence within NATO.
