The waste from Ibiza will be unloaded at the commercial docks of Palma and Alcúdia

Ibiza's waste will be unloaded at the commercial docks while the Government prepares the legal framework to transfer up to 30,000 tons of manure to Son Reus.

PalmThe waste from Ibiza that will be transferred to Mallorca will arrive at the ports of Palma and Alcúdia and will be unloaded "at the same docks as commercial cargo," according to Antoni Ginard, director of the Balearic Islands Port Authority (APB), speaking on the radio program ARA Baleares. The APB maintains that the facilities can handle the operation, while the Balearic Government is preparing the legal framework to send up to 30,000 tons of manure to Son Reus. The public body wants to ensure the continuity and smooth operation of the waste disposal process with other port activities, such as tourism and passenger transport, which "are of paramount importance" to the facilities. The APB manages approximately 18 million tons of cargo annually, so the director believes that these two ports can handle the transfer of 30,000 tons of Ibiza's waste, a quantity of waste that is expected to arrive at Son Reus by May 2026, according to the Government's projections. "We move more than 18 million tons of goods a year. This isn't a problem," he says.

The Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (APB) is considering transporting the waste to Alcúdia because shipping companies "have made offers" to manage the manure at these facilities and "could provide the service," explains Ginard. He adds that the APB "is coordinating with the Consell d'Eivissa (Island Council of Ibiza) to make its facilities available." If the waste were to arrive in Alcúdia, it would be unloaded at the commercial dock, and if it were to be transported to Palma, it would go to the West Dock, the Ponent Dock, or the commercial docks, according to the plan. However, he clarifies that they still don't know whether the waste will be transported by truck or container, nor which company will do it. A tender will determine the company that will be in charge. Although it is still unknown how or where the transfer will take place, Ginard assures that the APB will monitor "that environmental guarantees are met."

How the waste will be imported is a question that has gained momentum after the Government approved the decree that "creates the legal framework that makes it possible," according to the First Vice President of the Government and Minister of Economy, Antoni Costa, at a press conference. The Executive recently approved the new Decree on strategic projects after reaching an agreement with Vox with "slight modifications," according to Costa, compared to the original.

The far-right party introduced the Decree-Law on urgent measures to accelerate strategic projects in Parliament. The legislation amended the waste law and removed obstacles to its transfer between islands. Therefore, the pilot program that was supposed to begin in October of this year has not yet been launched. Between this month and May 2026, the government expects 30,000 tons of waste from Ibiza to arrive at Son Reus, while between May 2026 and 2027, it is estimated that approximately [amount missing] will be received. 60,000 tons.
