The workers of the Palma nursery schools: "A promise does not pay the rent"

PalmaThe workers of the outsourced nursery schools of the Palma City Council said "enough is enough" this Thursday at the municipal plenary session, where they denounced the delays in the tendering of the new contract and the impact they have on their salaries and the conditions of care for the children. "From January to September, nine months have passed," they pointed out. During this time, they claim that each worker has failed to receive between 4,500 and 5,400 euros. "This is what it means for us that the deadlines are extended," they remarked. The workers appeared with the support of the unions CCOO and UGT.

"A promise does not pay rent. A promise does not fill the shopping basket. A promise does not dignify a salary," claimed the workers, who demanded that Cort fulfill the commitments acquired after the protests and the strike of the 2024-2025 academic year.

The workers, who were represented at the plenary session by Clara Ruiz and Margalida Isern, also warned that the delay in the new contract not only affects their salaries, but also the service. As they denounce, the new tender was supposed to allow for the strengthening of the staff and the increase of resources for the centers. "A promise does not put a second professional in a classroom when it is necessary," they lamented.

The contract has been in the process for more than a year and is currently stalled due to the appeal filed by one of the bidding companies. CCOO and UGT also denounce that the documentation that was supposed to be published on August 7th was not made public until September 1st and they demand to know the content of the appeal.

The workers also criticized the cancellation of the meeting they had scheduled with the Councilor for Education, Lourdes Roca, and her team, and demanded "transparency, information, and immediate solutions."

"We are not here to ask for privileges. We are here to ask for justice, recognition, and decent working conditions," they concluded. CCOO and UGT do not rule out resuming the mobilizations in the coming weeks if Cort does not respond to their demands.
