PalmaThe UGT union has called off the strike at the Son Reus Animal Welfare Center managed by the concessionaire Athisa, which began on August 24, amid accusations of strikebreaking, and has announced a legal offensive. The union organization explained that it is withdrawing the protest after confirming the neutralization of the pressure measure as a direct consequence of the “serious and illegal external strikebreaking perpetrated by the municipal management of the Palma City Council”.

UGT has reported that the Director General of Environment, Natural Spaces and Animal Welfare, and the Head of the Department of Ecology, Agriculture and Animal Welfare, were performing tasks corresponding to the strikers continuously and repeatedly during the strike days. "It is striking and outrageous that the Director General of the environment, being a police officer on leave to hold this public office, dedicates himself to carrying out practices that fall directly into illegality and unconstitutional boycotting of the legitimate exercise of the fundamental right to strike,” they criticized.

UGT sources have underlined the “profound lack of respect” shown towards staff rights and added that if the initial situation was already shameful for the company and the Administration, “the absolute inaction of the City Council, which has not moved a single finger during the entire conflict,” questions the lack of ethics of those responsible, highlighting their political immaturity and responsibility.

The union pointed out that ending the strike does not mean stopping the conflict, quite the contrary. Until now, they explained, the union had kept several serious situations in reserve, awaiting the resolution of the labor dispute.

Now, they warned, UGT will pour all its efforts into publicly denouncing, before the judicial bodies, all those “serious irregularities that had not been published until now”. The union has already informed the labor authority of the facts and has stated that direct responsibility will be demanded for the violation of the fundamental right to strike and the alleged crime of strikebreaking against the political and managerial officials involved.

The organization has warned that it will not tolerate this modus operandi being normalized by the Palma council. "The staff returns to their posts with the firmness of a union that will continue to use all legal, administrative, and public complaint tools to defend the dignity of the workers and demand the correct provision of the animal protection and welfare service at Son Reus," they have agreed.
