They find a sub-standard dwelling in Manacor where 30 people lived together in precarious conditions

ManacorA joint inspection between agents of the National Police in Manacor and the Housing Inspection Service of the Government of the Balearic Islands, from the Ministry of Housing, Territory and Mobility, has located a dwelling where up to 30 people were living together, in a house in a precarious and still unfinished state, and which therefore did not offer optimal or safe conditions for people to live in.

Despite the conditions in which the dwelling is found, the occupants stated that they paid between 80 and 100 euros per person to the landlord, regardless of the number of people inside the room. According to the inspection, the landlord allegedly took advantage of the housing needs of the people who paid the rent.

Within the same property, during the month of August, up to six rooms were found, some of them only separated by curtains. There was also a covered area in the patio where up to six people would sleep, according to what the occupants told the agents. Several kitchens, three shared bathrooms, and a staircase that had several construction props as a railing were also found, as well as different rooms in the dwelling with holes and damage.

At the time of the inspection, the National Police agents identified seven of the occupants in the property. The occupants themselves pointed out that, at certain times, up to 30 people had lived in the same dwelling, a fact that would evidence the high degree of overcrowding of the property. The cadastral area of the property is 90 m² of housing, 103 m² of storage, and 35 m² of parking, although the entire surface area, 228 m², was being used as housing.

The Government has opened proceedings for the subsequent opening of a sanctioning file. In accordance with what is established by the Housing Law of the Balearic Islands, the overcrowding of dwellings is classified as a very serious infraction, which is punishable by fines of between 30,001 and 90,000 euros.
