They recover from the bottom of the sea part of a Roman anchor in Mallorca

PalmaThe Civil Guard has recovered from the seabed in the north of Mallorca a stock weighing about 350 kilograms belonging to the anchor of a vessel from the Roman Empire era, dating between the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, due to the risk of it being looted. Agents of the Special Group for Underwater Activities (GEAS) moved the piece this Thursday, which was located at a depth of about three meters in an area close to the coast, to a new location to ensure its protection.

Specialists had known the location of the stock for several years and carried out periodic inspections as part of their duties to protect submerged historical heritage. In one of the latest reviews, the agents determined that the piece had been manipulated with the apparent intention of extracting it, for which reason they communicated the situation to the Heritage department of the Council of Mallorca.

Given its proximity to the coast and the shallow depth at which it was found, the Heritage officials determined that it was convenient to move it to avoid possible looting.

Two GEAS agents refloated the stock using lifting balloons and subsequently transported it to a new location previously selected by a representative of the Council of Mallorca who accompanied the agents during the operation.

The piece has finally been deposited in this location to ensure its preservation and protection.
