PalmaThe GOB, Terraferida and the Less Tourism More Life Platform have called a protest on July 5 under the slogan 'es Trenc NO es toca' (the meeting will be at 10 am at the parking lot of the Ràpita Nautical Club). Participants will form a human chain at Es Trenc in defense of the island's protected areas, affected by the provisions that the PP has incorporated into the Omnibus Law. The three entities have once again warned that this norm will reduce the protection of the natural areas of the Balearic coast, especially in areas like Es Trenc, in addition to making coastal uses more flexible.

The vice-president of GOB, Tonina Siquier, has lashed out against the Omnibus Law, which has opened the door to modifying the regulations of the Trenc-Salobrar de Campos Maritime-Terrestrial Natural Park without having to go through Parliament, as had to be done before the approval of this PP law. In fact, the three entities have criticized "the PP's strategy" to progressively diminish "the protection instruments for natural areas", especially in the case of the Natural Resources Management Plans (PORN). As they have pointed out, the Omnibus Law eliminates the parliamentary processing requirement to modify the consideration of natural areas of special protection, the level of territorial protection, the limitation of authorized buildings, and restrictions on certain tourist activities. Decisions will now be made in the Governing Council, without any debate in Parliament or citizen participation.

The regulatory changes promoted by the PP will also facilitate the elimination of certain prohibitions for installing energy generation infrastructures, overhead power lines, and certain intensive fishing and shellfish activities. Environmentalists have also warned that the Omnibus Law also allows for an increase in the number of beach bars on the coast and also for there to be less distance between these establishments.

The entities also referred to the agrarian law, which is currently being processed. "It is an extensive and complex proposal to interpret, but one with a clear component: the will to boost complementary activities in the rural and natural environment," they point out, and they emphasize that it implies a modification of the uses of the primary sector.

A Government "strategy"

"Analyzed together, the initiatives promoted by the Government outline a clear strategy aimed at progressively weakening the effective protection of natural parks", criticize environmentalists, and speak of "two complementary phases". Firstly, "elimination or flexibility of the limitations established by normative instruments such as the Territorial Planning Directives (DOT), the regulation of beach services and the limitations included in the declaration of the Trenc natural park". "Part of this process has materialized through the Omnibus Law and will predictably be completed with the approval of the new agrarian law". Secondly, "the future modification of the PORN, with the objective of reducing or eliminating currently existing limitations and adapting them to a more permissive regulatory framework for certain uses".

"We are not facing a specific lack of protection, but rather a broader operation planned in the medium term. It is a progressive alteration of the architecture that sustains the protection levels of natural parks", pointed out Tona Fuster during the press conference where the entities announced the protest. "The defense of Trenc is the defense of all protected areas of Mallorca. What is at stake is not only the future of an emblematic landscape, but the preservation of the environmental protection model that Mallorcan society has built over decades", she added.

For his part, Pere Joan Femenies recalled that this protest is part of the campaign 'Mallorca al límit¡, with a large demonstration planned for July 26th.
