Two seriously injured in an explosion on a ship in the port of Palma
The injured were hospitalized after an explosion, allegedly caused by a gas leak.
PalmTwo people were injured in an explosion inside a boat moored in the port of Palma, an incident that mobilized emergency services. According to a statement from SAMU 061, the incident occurred at 11:00 a.m. at the Palma shipyard, on the Escullera road. Police sources indicated that the explosion took place inside the boat while it was docked at the port facilities.
The main hypothesis investigators are working with is that the explosion occurred when a flammable liquid, presumably used for cleaning, came into contact with a blowtorch flame. Initially, a gas leak was considered a possibility, but this option has become less likely as the hours have passed. The investigation has been taken over by the Homicide Unit of the National Police in the Balearic Islands. Meanwhile, forensic officers carried out an on-site inspection to determine the exact cause of the explosion. Firefighters and Palma Local Police also arrived at the scene and managed to extinguish the fire that broke out inside the vessel as a result of the explosion. Medical personnel treated the two injured people, who, according to sources, are crew members of the ship. Both have been stabilized and transferred to Son Espases University Hospital and the Juaneda Clinic with multiple injuries and burns. One of the injured is in serious condition with second- and third-degree burns, while the other also suffered burns, but less severe.
